Magic Lantern 5D Mark III raw video and camera reliability
mtheory replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Broadcast television does not have a culture of fine retouching and grading, so this one is purely for filmmakers. I expect the next batch of Sundance films to look better, a LOT better with the help of this RAW hack alone as filmmakers will not fail to take advantage of such a powerful workflow which was out of their reach for DECADES! -
For me personally, this crop can make a significant difference in a shooting workflow if they optimize the UI further ( which they will ). I prefer to use primes instead of zooms and that slows me down. Imagine switching the crops instead of switching prime lenses on a shoot realtime with a single button for example...that's SPEED, nevermind convenience.

Awesome tutorial, Alec! Seems like at this pace of development BMPC will get its ass kicked come July. ;)

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/a-cheap-27-inch-monitor-crossover27q/ Everyone's going crazy for these cheap 27" monitors that have Apple Cinema Display panels built in but with less quality assurance. Anybody tried these? Is the color performance in grading really comparable to Apple Displays?

People are already shooting commercial gigs with 5D RAW. If you're too scared to take the plunge with the rest of the gang, at least don't sit there trying to convince yourself everyone else is miserable when you're the one sitting on that lonely plank. I haven't had so much fun with my 5D since the Manual Firmware was released. 14-bit color. For free. Unreal.

FYI, the Kineraw cameras do not support IS on EF lenses.

I'm really curious about what's happening behind the scenes about the 7D Mark II release. This camera was heavily rumoured to be announced this summer, but it seems they've decided to push it back. It has some serious hardware in it and they are probably deciding whether to 1) Cripple it against ML, 2) Release and let ML crack it and make it even more successfull or 3) Release their own video features. With Blackmagic cameras around the corner, they really have no reason to hold back features for video.

It's 50/50, - Blackmagic messed up once but everyone is giving them another chance with fingers crossed. They're saying they're starting to ship out at the end of July, so August is the most likely time they'll start getting into people's hands.

Love it! Can I ask a quick off-topic question? Are you happy with your Mac Pro's performance in Windows with BootCamp? I need a Windows workstation for some cycle crunching and am considering hardware now for maximum stability...my experience with Windows 7 on Macbook Pro's with Boot Camp is not so great..are you finding Windows 7 Bootcamp stable on Mac Pro 12 core? Thanks.

Nevermind turning it into 1DC, they could probably turn into 1DRAW with 4K and slow mo frame rates.

BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
mtheory replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Old 5D or old 5D2 ? -
You can't really compare different cameras in different lighting situations. The 5D2 video was shot in the forest with lot of diffused flattering light hitting the subject, making it look more 'filmic'.

Peederj, the money you will save by buying BMPC instead of C100 you can just spend on a new Mac Pro workstation. :D -
2.5K CinemaScope anamorphic raw on the 5D Mark III
mtheory replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I really wanted the Kineraw to succeed. But between BMPC and 5D3 they have rather little room to maneuver now, unless they can drop their price down to $2K. -

Speaking of BMPC, there is a curious lack of demo footage online for a camera that is releasing in July. I really hope they will learn from Canon and realize the importance of putting prototypes in the hands of filmmakers early on. C300, for all its technical faults, had a top notch marketing showcase campaign with various short films. -

Looks like this is gonna be the new "But can it run Crysis?" of the film scene. :D -

Then why the hell noone uses them to shoot CINEMA except C500, - which incidentally is only used because it's RAW? :D They are "TV EOS" cameras indeed, for you TVmakers. -

A message for the anti-RAW brigade: You are a TV guys. C100/C300 are hands down the best indie TV camera in the world. Most TV pros moved to C100/C300. We are FILM guys. 5D/7D are hands down the best indie FILM cameras in the world. Most indie FILM pros stayed with DSLR as evident by about 70% of submissions in most indie film festivals still being DSLRs today. The RAW update makes our beloved 5D an even better CINEMA tool. We shouldn't be having these arguments, because we live in different worlds. FILM and TV. No beef. No drama. -

The greatest hurdle for them is actually having access to enough 1DX's, I think, I have alot more faith for the next 7D which is rumoured to have similar hardware to 1DX. Unless Canon is going to hardware-cripple it somehow... -

What prompted this condescending question? The fact that Andrew is outspoken? Is his lack of "pro" credentials a reason he should "behave"? WTF. Personally I love this forum for its tolerance of all opinions and lack of power-tripping PC mods who censor criticism because it might offend someone. Incorrect statements can be called out and debated ( as you did ), but let's note equate being nice with being professional. Christopher Doyle called out Claudio Miranda's bullshit and James Cameron called Spielberg a motherfucker in an interview. Let's just all grow up and live with the fact that sometimes you take the heat for positions you take ( or don't take ), and no one has immunity from criticism. -

I didn't mention Bloom and crossed out Hurlbut in my post just minutes before I read your post, mentioning that he is indeed looking into it, - I do apologize for making this assumption about Hurlbut. He deserves credit for putting out the most commercially successful 5D theatrical release to date, and I'm glad he's experimenting with the hack now! -

I dunno, "raw" makes me think of unpeeled potatoes. So RAW is not an acronym? Ok, how about Raw Access Workflow? That's right, you heard it here first. :D ROFL.
