That's pretty elitist of you.. And anyway, 4k has been widespread on smartphones for a couple years now.

Awesome. Fingers crossed for a great mirrorless product that I can afford With Fuji bringing out an IBIS camera and canon also possibly announcing a new mirrorless camera, I have a feeling this year will be a great one for choice. I know Panasonic and Sony bring a lot to the table too, but I have various gripes with all cameras at the moment that means I'm still looking for one that will satisfy me for years to come.

The ergos on the Panasonic g80 and canon m5 are fantastic. And the xt2 (which is similar size to the g80) has dual card slots. XT2 also has non-overheating 4k. So clearly there are no inherent issues with small bodies as long as they're designed well. My main gripe with mirrorless manufacturers these days is they keep releasing DSLR sized lenses. What is the point of mirrorless of the lenses are still going to be bigger. That's part of the reason why I hope Nikon choose the aps-c sized sensor for their first cam. But the mount diameter suggests full frame.

Does anyone else feel it would be a shame if the body was to be as big as the GH5 (which is as big as the d750)? I know that a lot of you are using these mirrorless cameras in professional circumstances but I really think camera companies are missing a trick here by abandoning small bodies and lenses and abandoning more casual users. I guess my demographic must be pretty niche these days. My ideal camera really would be the a6500 with better 1080p and maybe reduced quality 4k so the screen doesn't have to dim and the body doesn't overheat.

So the first reports are in that the new Nikon mirrorless camera may have a new mount (Z mount), with a 49mm diameter and 16mm flange. For comparison the Sony E mount diameter is 46.1mm and 18mm flange. I wanted to know what everyone's wishes are for this new camera. Personally: Retains the Nikon colour and tonality rendition of the D750. Body size and weight similar to the Panasonic G80. Please no bigger than the Sony A7 II series. APS-C sensor with similar performance to the Sony a6500, Fuji X-T2. Adapter that allows full control of its DSLR lenses. Video AF comparable to Sony a6500 or Canon M5 Prime lenses including 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm equivalents, in compact sizes. Similar layout/ergonomics to the Canon M5. Good quality 1080p with sharpness comparable to the Panasonic G80 or even the GH5.

Why would you need IBIS underwater??
-
The IT one is the best
-
Indeed but it doesn't eliminate camera sway, which I've found to be a huge problem when relying on IBIS and trying to get a "locked" shot
-
Reading the GH5 facebook group makes me want to barf. So much crying because of the lack of IBIS https://www.facebook.com/groups/pansonicgh5/?fref=nf If you're doing casual shooting then IBIS is great, but on professional shoots it's no replacement for monopods, tripods and gimbals.
-
I personally think leaving out IBIS is fine (although very dumb from a marketing point of view). But since theyre making this camera video centric, I'm much more disappointed that they left out internal ND's.

How big a screen? My monitor is 32" :P If you mean cinema screens then fair enough, but content from these consumer cameras are rarely seen on them.

The compression blocking to my eyes is not nearly as obvious as the false colour in the GH5s image. By false colour, I mean how inaccurate the colour is to begin with, as well as how it so readily shifts between different hues on not only the jacket and walls, but more importantly, the skin. The classic blotchy skin problem of Panasonic images. This is something that can't be corrected with a simple colour wheel shift.
-
Yes compression blocking but in terms of the overall image, the GH5s is showing loads of false colour; moreso evident in the video than in the still.
-
The ProAV video shows the GH5s being competitive with the A7S ii but the dpreview one shows the GH5s having very bad colour shifting https://***URL removed***/reviews/panasonic-lumix-dc-gh5s-first-impressions-review/4

Just get the G85 dude. It's much more ergonomic in comparison to the a6500 and XT20. Also from my experience, the G85 is no slouch in dynamic range or low light. Yeah it's not the best, but there are definitely worse - including from APS-C and full frame cameras. A lot of it comes down to how they process the raw image into video.

@wolf33d the oracle

I really enjoyed the clarity in Casey's GH5 videos. It really showed the places he visited or lived in in a new light. The colours were good as well I thought. Shame about the swap.

I think the more cinematic look you mention will be down to dynamic range and depth of field

The Tiffen Variable ND is good. One of the drawbacks of the cheaper ones is the depth and placement of the rotating part of the filter. In my experience, they are usually too slim and awkwardly placed. The Tiffen one is relatively chunky and placed well. The "X" effect mentioned by others is inevitable of an 8-stop variable ND. Others that don't have the X effect only go up to 6 stops. Of course you can go a step higher to the SLR Magic VariND, which has hard stops, a nice handle and better optics. But you really don't need to unless you have the money or are being paid good money. You can also go to fixed stop filters like JonPais suggests, but they're a pain in the ass in the field.

Do you not get a lot of handling noise and noise from the IBIS when taping the mic to the camera?
-
Yeh i totally get you guys. Im holding off on the a7r iii and iv right now because the sony a18 is right around the corner!
-
Does the X-pro2 have the following functions that were previously added to the X-T2 via firmware? Switching between EVF and rear LCD whilst recording Changing the iso while recording Changing the ISO using the scroll dial
-
If you can afford it, get the Metabones Nikon G to Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster. If not, then get the cheaper Chinese knock offs. The Metabones is well worth the extra money though imo.

I bought two G85 bodies a few months ago. Very pleased with them. And I have owned and used Nikon d5xxx's, sony a6300, fuji xt2, samsung nx1, etc. The ergonomics are great and both the 1080p and 4k are sharp and have minimal artefacts like moire.

I think Panasonic would be on to a real winner if it challenges the C line in low light and replaces the mechanical shutter with ND filters.
