  1. Just be aware that this lens, whilst quite sharp, is actually more like an f2.8 lens in light gathering and DOF.
  2. Thanks, I'm glad it's being received well. I actually had nightmares of waking up to loads of dislikes hah. I'm going to be posting various footage next. I also have direct comparisons between the D5500 and GX80/GX7 as well as the a6300 vs GX80. @jasonmillard81 Both cameras are very capable... The a6500 is a bit more expensive but has IBIS and a touchscreen which makes operation easier. The X-T2 has less rolling shutter in 4k and much better 1080p. Pick your poison.
  3. My first video review, shot on the X-T2

    EOS M5

On paper I like this camera a lot because of the DPAF and ability to use EF lenses but it uses the same sensor as the 80d with a slightly upgraded engine, so your best bet on image quality is to look at 80d stuff. The video is too soft for me.
  5. That is a ludicrously fast readout!! How?!!
  6. Yes... they work... except that they didn't update their APS-C sensor for years and even now it's only on par with the M43 sensors... and also their HD video quality still sucks. So yeh they got everything with their cameras right except those two little things. Oh and also their APS-C lens lineup is still lacking despite all the sales of their APS-C and Super 35 cinema cameras. But yeh other than that, they're great!
  7. Softness due to it being a 1080 crop of 4k. Macroblocking due to the codec, grading and crop making it more noticeable. @Andrew Reid do you have the G80? Is the screen rotation blocked severely by the placement of the mic input?
  8. Everyone has their own tastes and it's best to do plenty of tests by yourself to figure out what you like most. Personally when I had the GX80 I liked using -2 Contrast/Saturation on the Standard profile. These two at 0 or -5 baked in the values a little too much so I found a middle-ground. Sharpening is always very obvious to my eyes and I hate the look of it. Noise reduction makes the image look mushy, especially skin. So those two I turn to -5. The resulting is image is quite nice but I have found that using the Canon C100 Mark II setting on FilmConvert gives really, really nice results. I'm seriously considering getting the G80 atm...
  9. I bought the f1.4 used for about £480 and bought the f2 for £420 new. So the difference isn't too much. I heard you about the lack of IBIS. I have particuarly shaky hands so its useful for photography for me as well. I've been eyeing up the Panasonic G80 for this reason.
  10. Yeh turning them to -2 (the max) funks them. -1 is OK. Nothing of interest yet. Just this short video testing out the bokeh and flaring characteristics. I am returning the WR and keeping the f1.4 btw. The clutch focus is really useful and it has a nicer skin colour rendition imo (less orange). You can underexpose and then bring up the shadows. See my earlier post http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/20213-the-4k-fuji-x-t2-is-here/?do=findComment&comment=161905 Yeh the XT2 is a big step up from a D5500 in terms of video ergonomics (EVF, focus peaking) and detail (inc. 1080). Colour and tonality is a little more subjective of course. I just did some quick comparisons for you. The image quality in each 1080p mode is the same (24, 25, 29,97, 50, 59.94 fps) and the rolling shutter seems the same too. For me the main thing that lets down the system is the lack of a stabilised f2.8 16-50mm. I have emailed Metabones last week asking if they plan to make an EF adapter, but have not received any reply so far. There are also a few minor glitches with the camera here and there. Like sometimes there will appear to be lag on the screen until you half press the shutter. And sometimes when taking a photo, it takes it using the electronic shutter and with a brighter exposure than dialled in. I'm hoping Fuji sees feedback like this and makes a firmware to address these issues. If you are listening Fuji, please get in touch! Edit: Well what dya know... new firmware just came out http://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt2/index.html Sounds like it address the overexposure issue I just mentioned and also adds a LOCK function!
  11. @John Matthews I'd probably use a grey card if I were you Has anyone tested the "Flkr Decrease" setting? It is available on most Panasonic cameras. It allows you to set a fixed shutter speed. I'm wondering if you set this option to 1/50 and use Aperture priority and Auto ISO, does exposure compensation still work? That is one of the drawbacks of manual mode; you can set SS and Aperture but if you have auto ISO on you can't use exposure compensation past or below 0.
  12. I've always been a fan of the MX image. Back when I first started getting into cinematography (only a few years ago) I followed Daniel Peters' work and Louis CK's show, Louie. Both used RED MX's. It just has a very naturalistic image. The orange tanned look you talk about is the opposite to what I've seen tho. Usually it's quite the opposite with cold tones. Nice video btw.
  13. The waxy skin tones Andrew is talking about is likely because he's been using -2 highlights/shadows. I know that is the result I've been getting with those settings
  14. @mercer SOOC jpegs. No the moire/aliasing is nowhere near as bad as the XT1.
  15. I thought that 1DX II video you did was nice, but god damn this is definitely the most beautiful footage I've seen from you in a while Andrew. What lenses and LUTs (if any) did you use?
  16. Just dropping some more insight after doing more tests.. Don't use the Highlights/Shadows adjustments when shooting faces. It evens out the skin, giving that "waxy" effect. Classic Chrome with +4 color is my favourite profile. Provia can be a bit too orange on skin. ProNeg Standard is good too if you want something slightly flatter. 4k jello is real. Close to the Samsung NX1 and Sony A7S. Use with caution. Thankfully the 1080p is sharp; much sharper than my D5500. AF-C is very usable if you get to know it. In JPEG stills, the Grain option on Strong actually lifts up the blacks a little bit, giving that VSCO effect, which I quite like. The 23mm f2 WR is a weird lens. Out of focus areas have a rendering like some vintage lenses I have used. It's nice but not what I expected from a somewhat expensive modern lens. The f1.4 has a more modern rendering but the mechanics act more like an old lens. The below were taken with the f2 WR. Really want to go out and shoot properly but just don't have the time at the moment.
  17. I cant believe 43rumors used the headline "The new G80 firmware doesn’t seem to fix the IS issue on all lenses" for that video. Anyone who's used a telephoto zoom with optical stabilisation has seen that "recoil" effect. You can't expect a zoom of that range to be totally stable handheld. Ridiculous. I don't even have/intend to get the camera and I feel annoyed. Poor journalism and all that..
  18. At 1080p I would say ISO 3200. 4K it's ISO 12800 or near that anyway. I do have a higher tolerence to noise than most people though I think. Here's a clip at 10,000 The good thing about these Fuji files is that unlike some other cameras, it doesn't really kick in noise reduction much at high ISOs and so details remain quite visible. Using noise reduction in post gives great results. One somewhat annoying thing regarding ISO I forgot to mention earlier is that you can't change it whilst recording. I've yet to see any macroblocking in 1080 or 4k. The bitrate for 1080 seems to be variable, usually between 30 and 100 mbps. There are no artefacts in 4k either but there is a little bit of moire and aliasing in 1080. You can see that here https://***URL removed***/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=nikon_d5500&attr29_1=fujifilm_xt2&attr29_2=canon_eos80d&attr29_3=panasonic_dmcg85&attr72_0=1080&attr72_1=1080&attr72_2=1080&attr72_3=1080&normalization=full&widget=378&x=0.03472009788926267&y=-0.5420819490586931
  19. So I again have the camera in my possession and I tend to keep it this time The other options with their pros and cons listed: Panasonic G80 - Great usability and it has IBIS. / Poor skintones, lack of faster 35mm equivalent lens, poor handling of flares. Canon M5 - Smallest option, esp with the 22mm (its 35mm equiv lens). Great touchscreen AF. / Poor video quality (judging by the 80D's videos). Nikon D750 - Best and most affordable lens selection. Superb colours and tonality. / Bit too big, poor live view AF. Sony A6500 - Touchscreen, IBIS, good affordable APS-C lenses. / I'm betting will have the same crap 1080p and jello 4k as the a6300. Of course this camera is not without its faults. A lot of the lenses have noisy aperture and/or focusing motors. It doesn't have IBIS or touchscreen. The DR option is disable in video. I think the AF in video mode needs more work. I'm confident its addressable in firmware. Fuji, if you are listening... Basically we need to be able to have smoother focus racking and an adjustable rack speed. Also we need to be able to use back-button autofocusing when in manual focusing mode (like what is possible in stills). And we need a way to lock the focus whilst adjusting the point. I plan to skip out of this forum a while now. It's been doing my creativity no good I will come back if I have any more tests to show you (here's one and another) or some more artistic footage.
  20. As teenagers, they will probably already have a good idea of what kind of things they like. Maybe it would be good to ask them about their favourite scenes in their favourite films and then teach them some of the techniques used to create that scene?
  21. What cameras can record in HDR? Why is a HDR screen required to display HDR when you could just bake the dynamic range into a normal video file?
  22. If I remember correctly the camera only allows you to set the framerate based on the frequency you select. So for 24 or 60p you have to set 59.94hz. I think the frequency option is in the same place as bitrate and framerate.
