Nikon's flat profile isn't as flat as sony slog or blackmagic prores but it is almost as flat as canon clog. It would be awesome if Nikon made a more video orientated camera
-
Thanks for the info JG. I suppose I just need to experiment more really. I noticed that Wide DR clips highlights sooner but it raises shadows more than CLog, which means I can drop exposure.

I wrapped up over three days of shooting on Sunday and have done some little experiments since. Wanted to share some thoughts.. Firstly I have to say that I am finding it hard to find much of a dynamic range difference between it and the Nikon d5500 - and by extension the Panasonic GX7. Secondly I find the colours and tonality of the d5500 Flat to actually be preferable to CLog. And the Wide DR profile is rubbish really. It's not much different to a standard profile on other dslr's. However I have tweaked a few settings in Clog and am now getting a much better image. The main changes are to change the "Setup Level" under "Other Functions" to 0. And under "Color Matrix" set the "Phase" to +18. Now the blacks are no longer raised and the colours are much more natural and pleasing. I have not found any mention of these two settings on the internet though strangely. Good news is that I no longer think it necessary to use an external recorder because I found that Neat Video 4 completely removes all the colour noise and other compression artefacts. It's really fucking magic. Finally the resolution and noise performance lives up to my expectations. And the inbuilt exposure and focus aids are great, as well as the dual-pixel AF. Basically it's just an awesome camera to use. If I could just get a little more latitude in the highlights...

just curious, what profile were you shooting the c300 in?
-
Nice footage. Far too nice for super8 though
-
I have to say I find it hard to believe that an external recorder won't help because most of the image defects are just due to the high compression. Anyway once my video assist arrives I'll know for sure. Aaron I was recording at various ISO's up to 16,000.

Thanks for the responses everyone and especially Ebrahim. On the first day I was exposing my shots to +1 stop. But I have since been shooting until just under 100 IRE and have been getting much better results. Am about to start my final day of shooting now. Will post some clips over the coming weeks Only thing is CLog is very prone to banding and colour noise when pushed around. But I'm not quite willing to give up that nice dynamic range. So I'm probably going to get an external recorder Attached stills with a quick 5 min grade.

When I set my zebras to 65% a lot of areas that are clearly not overexposed start striping. Is this really an appropriate setting? Should I not look at the waveform monitor and just expose til I hit 100?
-
Hi guys Sorry to lay these questions so fast and dirty but ive only just received the camera last night and am due to shoot it tonight. (it was meant to be delivered last week) When using C-log what is the best way to find exposure? Looking at monitor? Exposure meter? Waveform? Zebras?Should I use noise reduction? Can I change the autofocus rack speed? Will a really low-end laptop be able to run the wifi remote monitor/control? The laptop Im looking at is www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4175852.htm

Leica SL with 10bit 4K video and possible Panasonic full frame sensor!
Inazuma replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Seeing this thing now made me realise why I threw up randomly earlier today. -
No menu options for framerate over HDMI. What I did notice was that when the camera's recording was set to 1080p 50, my monitor would have to restart whenever I pressed record. I found a way around this was to switch the HDMI output to 720p. Not sure what this means. A few framegrabs attached. BTW one thing I have noticed also is that the autowhitebalance on the d5500 liveview is exceptionally accurate even under unusual lighting circumstances. It's a shame that you can't lock it. And also you can't pick a particular temperature; you can only preset using an image. Also in regards to colour etc. I shoot this cam alongside a Panasonic GX7 and although the Nikon does give perfect colours I would not say that the Panasonic lags behind by much. It just gives a different look. More gritty.

Great post Ebrahim as usual. Very detailed. But as an owner of the D5500 I will say your expectations are a little overblown. The detail level is much the same as the D5200 (and probably the D5300), ie. not close to 1080p of Panasonic cameras. It's also noisier and the DR is not much different. What I do love about this camera though is the extremely natural rendering of colour and tonality in the Flat profile. It's also just a nice camera to hold and use. I actually have a C100 MKii coming soon (my first "proper" camera purchase). When I have time I would like to do a comparison between it and the other cameras I have. Should be interesting for fellow gear geeks

The d5200 had a lot of banding when you raised the shadows. As far as i know the d5300 doesnt have this issue

How does the dual AF work with the sigma lenses? Is it smooth and quiet?
-
i think it's due to the sheer amount of data they get from the multiple sensors shooting at different angles and focal lengths. Im really impressed by the technology in this but of course we need more sample photos first. The one's on the site show really nice tonality but are too small to make any further judgements really

Some incredible technology in this camera. There are multiple sensors and lenses in the body. The lenses are actually laid out sideways within the body and light enters through mirrors. It takes multiple photos at once and stitches them together. You end up with 52 megapixel photos with, apparently, amazing low light performance and full-frame shallow depth of field which can be controlled in post. Oh, and it takes 4k video. https://light.co/camera

Thanks for the info Ebrahim. BTW I spoke to CVP today (big equipment seller in the UK) and they said they received their first shipment yesterday. It included 10 units, which is apparently a lot more than they usually receive in a first shipment from BM. They expect exponentially more units to be shipped to them over the coming weeks. There were 140 preorders.

What's the DR mediocre in comparison to though? I have seen tests between it and various cameras like the BMPCC, A7S and FS7 - all of which have claimed more than the 12 stops that the c100 apparently has and none have seemed to top it really. Would absolutely love the Ursa Mini 4.6k but atm the feature set of the c100 suits me more, not to mention the cost of media. I'm not convinced it will drop in price very significantly for a few years either. I mean look at SSD's. They've been around for a while now, with the market growing exponentially but the cost is still falling at a slug's pace.

Documentaries, commercials and short films. And ideally want to get into music videos eventually.
-
I'm probably going to pull the cash trigger and get one of these cameras soon. Any owners have any regrets they want to share before I do go for it?
-
I had assumed this was the standard technique. What were you guys doing before??
-
Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm also now wondering what your limit is on a days work? 8 hours?
-
so what's the verdict?

Just had a look at that raw clip. Your grade is nicely done!
