I know this, but could you explain further with your own interpretation?

I suppose what I meant to say is that I have a favourite angle of view (the angle of view that a 35mm lens on 35mm film gives or 17mm on m43). After that it's only the DOF that differs; but that's aperture dependent. Would I prefer the same angle of view but on FF for shallower DOF? Yes. Not totally sure if that's relevent to the poll though

I have a favourite focal length: 35mm (in 35mm terms). But I've yet to see anything that imperatively suggests sensor size in itself makes near as big a difference in image aesthetic as the technology behind it and the lens and lighting in front of it.

Why film the panning shots at 48fps if its only going to be shown at the traditional 24fps?

I'll be waiting for d5300 vs gh4 tests Matt ;) And also tests with the balancer LUT

Indeed. I get a little irked when people repeatedly talk about noise in the shadows. I've never shot motion picture film, but I have shot 35mm stills and even with ISO 400 film, there is a lot of noise and a lot less detail than digital cameras. Getting back to the topic of apertures. Yes f2 on m43 has the equivalent aperture of f2.8 on s35 (f4 on full frame), which is often cited as the sweet spot for cinematography. So yes you do somewhat negate the noise difference. But one of the advantages of using a full frame I guess is that they have a 24-105mm f4 lens (or 24-120 for nikon and 24-70 for Sony FE) with optical stabilsation. No such zoom lens with equivalent aperture exists for m43. This is something that constantly bugs me; making me want to change or add to my gear.

The Ultra con gives a softening effect on its own due to the way it softens the tonal graduation. I'm not sure if it needed to be combined with a digital diffusion. I think the filter does increase DR in the highlights a little, along with the overall effect of making them roll off more nicely. You won't notice much difference in noise levels. Yes it lifts shadows a little but you're still shooting into underexposed areas and you'll continue getting noise regardless. For what it's worth, the noise (especially in 4k) should be very fine. EDIT: Hmm actually I just did a little test and you're right. The filter lifts shadows enough that you don't have to lift them in camera

Do you shoot with a LCD magnifier mojo? How are you getting it so stable and in focus?
-
I've heard good things about that one but for my money I would get the kamerar like andy suggested. The standout feature for me is that it's one arm, so much easier to move about on the rails or take on and off the rig. And it's just as stable.

Rumors have been pretty sketchy recently. The OMD em1 thing, the overinflated 7d mk ii, the zero rumours about an a7 with 5 axis.

Anyone care to explain why video cameras have more dynamic range than stills cameras?

Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100

Just came across this and this Is it just me or does the Lx100 seem to have a generally more pleasing image than the GH4? -
Buy the Canon 28mm f1.8 or Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 (or both). Both superb lenses. My main regret in giving up my Canon t5i and Nikon d5200 back in the day were because I'd lose use of those lenses :(

I do wish the GX7 had higher bitrates but having said that, I've never really had any problems grading. The codec is very maleable. The GH3 on the other hand, not only does not have focus peaking but its LCD and viewfinder are both so low resolution that I found it difficult to achieve focus even with a magnifier. Also the GH3 has noticeably more noise, starting at ISO 800.

Looks great jase well done :) The filters don't nnecessarily increase DR but they do make the tonal gradation much smoother and more film-like. I love it. I should be doing my first narrative piece with it next weekend.

What have RED done to earn your disrespect? I think RED generally gives a far more cinematic image than Canon 5d h264, not sure about RAW. But some studios really abuse the image and make it too crisp (ie. the hobbit)

I fully specced up Alexa. Why is this even a question :p
-
My GX7 exhibits very fine grain noise at iso 3200. I find it hard to believe that the GH4's 4k can't produce an even cleaner result :/

Nice stuff nahua :) BTW for more natural colour in night shots I recommend using the inbuilt Incandescent whitebalance with the Hue/Tint adjusted to near the bottom right corner.

Anyone know any lenses that give circular rainbow flaring?
-
Standard has the most accurate colours. Use it at -5 everything and a 0/0 curve and either Low or No iDynamic. This way you get a nice tonal range and the least 'video' image.
-
They look good if you're after a raw look (skating etc) but i think they're a little harsh for film use. Maybe they'd be nicer if shone through a flash diffuser and some warming gel
