The G7 does not carry a signal through HDMI when recording. In other words, you can't use an external monitor with a G7. Now, shooting a Feature Film on a 3 inch LCD screen does not really seem to be a great idea in my opinion. Image quality is great though.

If the vignetting only shows up at the corners, then it is okay because i can crop it off by adding black bars to the image. I do that usually anyway. Will IBIS work with non-native lenses also? Because I always shoot with Nikon lenses on a Speed Booster.

I am using the GH3 still since the day it was released (and still loving the footage), with a Speed Booster XL and a Sigma 18-35. The GH3 uses the full sensor for video, just like the GH5 will in both 1080p and 4k modes, and there is some slight vignetting going on at 18 mn. Now, the GH5 will not have a bigger sensor than the GH3 right? And does the IBIS have any influence on the crop factor / vignetting? Does anyone know if the GH5 will have more (perceived) dynamic range than the GH3 in video mode?

Besides an ND filter which goes on top of the lens in stead of being in camera before the lens, what actually is the difference in workflow? You still set the exposure manually right? You don't let the camera decide on which ISO, shutter speed or F-stop it uses I suppose, right? You still focus manually I suppose also. So, what is the difference with a GH4 in terms of workflow? Battery is great on the Panny's. The form factor of a FS5 might be better, but do you really shoot handheld? If so, why don't u just buy a cheap Camframe or rig for the GH4? I don't see the fuzz. What really would make your life easier is filming with a Sony Handycam. Autofocus, auto exposure, 1/3" sensor, mic on top. But any videographer who takes his craft seriously, will want to control all variables and will never let a camera decide everything for him. The only thing I can say is, it will get easier. At first I was also overwhelmed with everything you have to take into consideration with every damn scene, shot and situation. But now, after having filmed 50 weddings, getting the a great shot everywhere I am dropped is as natural as breathing. Yes, I'm still absolutely destroyed after a 14-hour day, but framing, exposure and focus come naturally to me now. And I film with a GH3. Just don't overcomplicate things. I have a rig with a microphone and monitor on top on a hot shoe. The GH3 only uses 3 batteries on even the longest shooting days. That's 2 swaps on a day. One 64GB card does the trick, no more thinking about it. I leave my aperture mostly on F2 or F2.5, shutter speed on 180 degrees and ISO on 200. That means I only need to play with the variable ND for exposure, at least in the daytime and exteriors. Because of the monitor I don't need to zoom in to nail the focus. It's just point, focus & ND, shoot. 1 camera, one lens, one rig. Spare battery in my pocket. Good for the next 10 hours. Of course shooting interviews is a slightly different craft. You need to do more, like lighting and sound, but you also have more time for that. If you keep getting overwhelmed, ask an assistant.

Oh I am sorry guys. I just downloaded the same clip from my online backup storage, and that one worked. So I guess something must have gone wrong with either copying or downloading the clip to this harddisk. Pfew. Guess I can still trust the camera and my cards Topic may be removed. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Hi everyone, I'm using the Panasonic GH3 and GH4 for our wedding video business, and something has happened that has never happened before. One of my clips has been damaged or became corrupt and is unplayable by any player. It's a 3.75 GB file of the speech of the bride's dad. Luckily, we shoot everything with 2 camera's / videographers so my 2nd videographer saved the day. But, this is very worrisome as this has never happened before nor do I ever want this to happen again. I use the same cards as I always use, and I format them (full format) on the PC before I go to a wedding. After the full format I also do a quick format with a program called SD-formatter. Anway, I have shot thousands and thousands of clips this year like this and none of them had any problems. So what could have happened this time? Card getting faulty and in need of replacement? Just something random? And is there anything or any program that I can use to recover or repair this file?

C300 / C500. Great looking stills by the way.

For our wedding film business I am in the market for a drone. I have played around with some footage of a DJI Phantom 3 4K and it looks really good to me. I could settle for this. With the DJI Phantom 4 on the market, the price of the '3' has settled and it looks very tempting now. So I narrowed it down to the DJI Phantom 3 4K and the Professional version. It seems that the only real differences are that the Pro version has a higher resolution streaming and that it has Lightbridge where the non-pro version doesn't. Or am I missing something? So, in practice, how much of a difference is this? How is the connection in the non-pro version? Does it lose it's signal? Or does it just have fewer range? And how much would that range be? The Pro version is still 999 euro's in my country, whereas the non-pro version is 630... Pretty big difference. Anyone have any experience or knowledge about this? Would the 4K non-pro version be good enough for shooting weddings and flying limited distances?

Hi, Recently I have encountered a pretty weird problem with Premiere CS6. Whenever I apply audio filters and effects, such as EQ and Reverb, at first everything is fine. Effects are applied and audible. If i then close Premiere and load the project the next day for instance, I get an error stating that 'the audio filters are missing'. And indeed, the reverb and EQ are no longer working. In the individual clip effects tab, it reads 'missing audio filter'. But, if I then go to Effects / Audio and drag the reverb effect on the clip, it is working perfectly fine. So the effects aren't really missing, as they stills how up in the effects tab and can be applied. Perfectly normal. Until I close the project and load it again later. What could be the cause of this? Anyone have any idea? Could I try anything else besides a clean reïnstall? I have a couple of custom plug-ins that I would need to reïnstall then as well also which I hope I won't have to do Thanks in advance!

My current camera field monitor died today so I'm in the market for something new. With all the modern camera's offering 4k resolution, I need it to accept a 4k resolution input but it only needs a 1080p screen. Preferably 5.6 - 7 inch in size and not too expensive. < € 500 would be great. I like the Blackmagic Video Assist but I'm not sure if that accepts 4k input. I'm not talking about the 4k version which is way to expensive for me (and overkill) Anyone has any other recommendations? Oh yea, I shoot with Panasonics. GH3, GH4 and probably soon the GH5. So if you know if it works with these camera's without any problems, that would be great. Thanks!

I have both camera's. I shoot mainly weddings and I own a GH3, a G6 and a G7. My collegue uses the GH4. Which camera is 'better'? Well, in terms of IQ the G7 has the edge simply because of the 4k mode. In 1080p mode, they are (all) pretty similar though. Maybe a slight edge to the G7 in low light being a bit less noisy at ISO 1600 and above. Nothing striking. Just make sure you never have to go higher than that. But there are many more factors which make a camera good or bad. The GH3 is still my main cam. Why? - Much longer battery life then G6 / G7 - The abillity to use an EXTERNAL MONITOR (G6 / G7 cannot) - Body handling - Headphone jack (G6 / G7 do not have it) For me, these are of the upmost important. As well as reliability. The GH3 has not let me down once since I've got it over 3 years ago. Never overheats and never fucks up. *knocks on wood And the image actually still strikes me every time I use it. Yes, it is time for something new and maybe the GH5 will be it. But until then, this is my A-cam. Here is an example of what it can do

Guys do your G7's also break up the recorded files into clips of 6 minutes in length? Just bought one and realised mine is doing that. No skipped frames in between though, only the clips all have a duration of 6:00. Normal? Or a setting that can be tweaked?
-
I shot some clips yesterday at a wedding with the G7 and I realised that the camera saves the clips with a maximum length of 6 minutes. So the clips are 5:59 or 6:00 long. There doesn't seem to be any missing frame in between those clips, although the audio shifts for 1ms. I haven't actually read anything about this. Does yours also do this? And can I do anything about this with the settings? Thanks!

You named the video 'Test 5d Mk3 raw' so I guess I'm gonna have to guess a 5D Mark 3.

Guys, I'm messing around with my new Panasonic G7 and I've noticed a something weird. Focus peaking does seem to work great, but actually only after I hit the record button. So when I'm previewing the scene I only see a couple of 'peaking lines' at most, but when I'm recording I see tens of lines aiding me. In other words, peaking works great during recording but not so much before I hit the record button. Is that normal? Or is it some kind of setting I can tweak? Thanks!

Ah thanks for the tip. I was zooming out 50% but I guess this is much faster

Ah I found out how to apply the Warp Stabilizer to the 4k clips on a 1080p timeline. I just use 'nest' and that does the trick to be able to apply the WS. Great.

Alright, did some tests today. My observations so far: - G7 in 1080p 50fps in MP4 or AVCHD mode is 99% the same. So don't have to worry about that. Will just use AVCHD for 1080p then. - G7 1080p vs GH3 1080p with low ISO's is 99% the same. The GH3 has a bit more magenta in the colors and the G7 more green. Which one is 'better' I don't know. Probably the G7 is a bit more natural looking. - G7 vs GH3 in 1080p mode in low light and high ISO's: Starting from ISO 1600 the G7 starts to be really a lot cleaner. ISO 3200 and 6400 is unusable on the GH3 due to too much noise but the G7 is a lot cleaner. Might even be usable at 3200 and 6400! - G7 at 4k mode, downsampled vs GH3 at high ISO's. G7 is EVEN CLEANER at 4K mode. - G7 at 4k mode vs GH3 at 25p -> GH3 is smoked. I don't see any gain in DR however. The colors are slightly different but no big deal. Slight color correction fixes either. So the big improvements are cleaner high ISO's and of course better detail and no more moiré (!) at 4K mode. Too bad I can't use an external monitor with g7 but luckily it has focus peaking. So at least I can see the focus good enough on the small screen. I'm thinking now of shooting the wedding on the G7 as the main cam. Use 4K for 90% of the shots and downsample in post. Then use 1080p 50fps for the slowmotion shots. They look about 95% the same as the shots I'm currently making with the GH3 so I don't need to 'get used' or anything to what I'm seeing. Computer had no problems with 4 different types of footage on the timeline so that's great as well. I only need to find out how to make the Warp Stabilizer work on 4k clips on a 1080p timeline. It simply doesn't work. When I 'nest' the clip and apply WS it actually works, but it crops the image very weirdly and like 200%. Anyone knows how to do that?
-
Thanks Andy! Will do some testing soon and see how it compares to the GH3. Also, will see how my PC handles all different types of footage on the timeline. GH3's mov 50fps, G7's MP4 4K and G7's AVCHD 50fps. Sounds crazy now but that's how it might end up after a real shoot.
-
Ok thanks guys. So the G7 probably is just a better camera overall, even in 1080p modes. Will do some quick tests today. Probably lower noise, better colors and more detail from what I understand. Will it also grade as good? Or is the 28 mbps actually not holding up so well as the 50 mbps from the GH3, when let's say, applying Filmconvert and grain? Last question. When shooting HD, do you use AVCHD or MP4? And is there any quality difference?

Hi guys, Great topic. I just ordered a G7 and I was wondering how the 50/60fps 1080p mode compares to the same mode on the GH3. Of course the downsampled 4k footage will look much better, but as I like slow motion, how would these 2 stack up in terms of DR, noise, colors, detail? I have also seen that the G7 is pretty darn good in low light and very clean at high ISO's. Is that also the case for the 50p 1080p mode? Or does that only apply to the 4k mode?

Hi, I just ordered a Panasonic G7, will receive it tomorrow. I shoot weddings and my next wedding is monday so I will not have much time to test it out in the field. I actually ordered it as a replacement for my G6 which I use as a ceremony cam on a tripod, but now I started to wonder if the G7 should actually just replace my GH3 as the main cam. Why do I like the GH3 and still shoot with it? Besides the great battery life, the HDMI-out for an external monitor and great 1080p image (IMO), I often want to use slow-motion in my edits and therefore shoot a lot of 1080p at 50 fps. Now I know that the G7 also shoots 1080p at 50fps. So now I started to wonder if maybe the G7 should become the main cam. I can't find any comparison video's for the 1080p modes unfortunately. Does anyone here knows any of these video's or actually has or had both and can tell me more about this? How does the G7 compare to the GH3 at 50 / 60fps? Is there any improvement in terms of dynamic range, noise, colors, detail, etc? Thanks!

Great topic guys. Vimeo started this shit almost 3 months ago and have changed nothing significant. In various topics on their forum, I have posted over 15 times stating my unhappiness with the current system. First in kind words, later in more clear language. And lately just fucking rude but who gives a shit. I'm bored with them and the fact that they don't take their paying customers, like me, seriously. They have put fingers in their ears and are singing 'lalalala, Adaptive Streaming is great, lalala'. In their latest update they even say literally 'STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT AS IS GREAT'. Lol. Just a big lol. We all agree on the flaws of this system and how it can harm us video producers, but you know what's even a better argument? They are actually already experimenting on our business for the last 3 months. Without any notice or offering any alternative, they just implemented this shitty system. Still the first 10 seconds of all my video's start in 360p. Still, sometimes DURING playback, the resolution changes to 360p. Why didn't they test this system on their own shitty video's first and implemented it when it was 100% functional? Nope, they just wanted to test it in the field I guess. On my films. It's outrageous, really. Everbody, cancel your subscriptions right now. Stop the auto-renewal of your membership right now. It's the only way how they might ever consider changing some stuff back and giving us some control back. They don't listen to our words but they will listen to money. If you want to make a point, stop your membership right now. It has more effect than just complaining. Believe me, I tried.

Oh I see now this thread is already old and the cashback-deal is over

That's a helluva Unsharp Mask. I'll admit it pops a bit more but it is way to digitally sharpened for me.
