  1.   Have you tried finding a58 tutorials from youtube or vimeo?
  2. What software should I use for Raw workflow apart from the free ones? I'm in a position where I have been planing to get a commercial Raw image management and adjustment program. Since I do quite a bit of photography as a hobby. But it hit me that could I be using the DXO optics pro with's it fine tuned lens correction modules to do my raw image processing. Has anyone tiried a DXO workflow for raw PNG's ?? I'm all so naturally interested in the LIghtroom 5.. But what comes to the video editing suite. I have no plans to be cash cow for adobes creative cloud suite at this point. I may consider Adobe Creative suite cloud later if video hobby turns into an income source and no proper alternative video editing tools have emerged at that point. The following is my planed workflow path for RAW video. 1 Prep phase Raw conversion with community tools. 2 Lightroom 5 or DXO optics pro. image adjustments / fine tuning optical corrections and export to .. 3 Decent video editor (perhaps Magix video edit pro) What do you think? All recommendations are welcome.
  3.   All points of view are as valid as the other ones. I havent said one needs to build a computer by them selves. I'm just offering another point of view on the subject. You are beeing rude for no reason.. you make it sound like If I'm not willling to sit at your fun club table with wide open wide puppy eyes staring the the black box of pieces of HW I should go away.   I do value your points on getting stuff up and runnig fast.   It is my understanding that this forum caters to a wide audience and signifficant part of that might not be yet in a position to financially consider a platform like the new mac pro. Alternative ways of acchieving the same level of tehnology is far from useless discussion.   Many of us have yet to earn our first dollar/ euro from paid video related work what we have done. So I would not generalize to much.
  4. If you can stick with a 6 core CPU and powerfull Graphics card you will save alot of money.   Fractal design XL case 100€ 6 core Ivydrige-E Socket 2011 (for future IO expnasion needs) 500€  / 350€ for 4 core Ivybridge-E Motherboard with plenty of SATA connectors and 8 DDR3 slots (thunderbolt connectors are a plus) 180-280€ 32GB RAM - ~300€ Powerfull graphics card like GTX 680, 780   200-600 € PSU that can handle 2 graphics cards when needed 120€ Proper cooler for the cpu.  50€ HHD's based on ones needs / budget .. 4 x 4TB Westerndigital RED/Green would be a good starting point for mass storage. ~1000€ FAST HHD's for system / initial data capture. ~500€ Blueraydrive 70€ Mouse 8-60€ Keyboard 10€ / pro keyboard 100€ OS windows 7 PRO. 300€   3980€ with the most expensive parts listed above (6core, 32GB ram(option for 64GB), 16TB+1TB harddrives, GTX780,WIN7PRO)   Will be interesting to compare the MAC PRO to one like this once prices are available.
  5.     Regular HDD's are the go to solution for us little guys. Untill we get hair over our balls :D When thinking about storage needs for this kind of new platform think hybrid and fast. Professional 4k production will likely benefit from storage devices that have SSD*s for the write tasks and regular HDD's where the data can be offloaded from the still more expensive SSD's .. Think about offloading multiple SSD's at the same time to the storage box to save time.   Let's do a quick example of workflow constraints when using 5DIII raw. You record 10 x 128GB cards allmost full of material during a days shoot.   Say that is 1200 GB of data writing that to a SSD one CF at time with not time spent to the actual pluggin in the cards with an estimate of 120MB/s write speed get's us 1200 / 0.12 = 10 000 / 60 = 166.6 minutes  .. now add CF swaps 30 seconds per swap = 6 minutes .. we are at 172 minutes for the offload process.   Now if we had SSD's instead of CF's we would be at 200-320MB/s write speed a modest estimate for single drive configuration. Read speeds dont matter as much as long as they surpass the write speed or match it. Say a production team with 10 x 256 GB SSD would be looking at say 2200 GB of data... that takes 2200 / 0.32 = 6875 / 60 = 114 minutes + the SSD swaps = rough 2 hours in optimal circumstances.   Now enter multiple SSD copying at the same time .. there is where the bandwith comes handy. .. TB2 connections are enablers and not limitations. How ever they add extra cost overhead for the small guys. Since boxes based on them are higher margin items. But hey I'm not whining per se that Apple builds this amazing design with foward looking hardware .. Even tho Apple should have asked Intel to release the optical thunderbolt instead of some cheap capitalistic incremental update (copper version 2).   What comes to Apple and criple ware. Apple can remotely uninstall software from your Iphone if they feel like it. But I 'm no expert of Apple computers and their OSX side. I have close to 0 experience with them.   The color of Apple 4K screens should be good if the past ~23" IPS screens are any indication for their future products.
  6.   It is my understanding that if you have the 5DMK3 you can benchmark the card in the camera once you have the ML + Raw stuff installed.    Regardless of the matter I really like the Lexar USB 3 card reader .. I paid a heafty sum for it in the days It was likely the first ever sold in Finland. Costed me ~60-70 euros and Amazon.de now sells them at about 22 euros.
  7. This new Mac pro sure is awesome but it likely needs high margin extra boxes in conjunction to it. 4K video editing that this machine is most certainly designed for needs ALOT of HDD space. Perhaps Apple has some nifty black box with round edges TB2 connected with plenty of HDD slots inside that they plan to sell as well.
  8. Great job. Perhaps teaming up with more ppl and working together to drive the price point down. How ever it turns out. I hope he get's some financial success from a few customers at least.
  9. I got the Komputer Bay + gh2(Driftwood) problem sorted. I star recodring 1 minute of Lo mode video to the card. Then swap to Hi mode and I can keep on recording as long as I need to in Hi mode.   Lo mode 70 Hi mode 138 (I think)
  10. The design is not that special. In a sense that similiar designs have been tought up by many designers. The thing that is the big deal is that Apple actually makes it happen. It's very easy to think the design one step further a tubular structure where the central cooling structure is a water reservoir. It's good to remember that Apple has made logical heat path thinking into reality in the past as well. They had MAC's with thermal chambers (power PC something).   The main Beef I have with Apple is that they are highest level consumer company in a sense that you get only what they decide to give to you. Apple provides LOCKED in systems where the user can do what they allow you to do. Same could be said about many other companies and it would be 100% true. Specially if one compares Apple to MS.   One other prospect about Apple that many ppl dont often discuss and the more or less dismiss it as a "let's not talk about that" is the use of chinese slave labour.  And sure what company does not.   Dressing to latest H&M trend Bangladesh clothing and holding the latest Foxcon Iphone you bought via monthly plan just to fit in. Sure the Iphone is acutally a good product. We should not forget the realities we buy into when we buy. The Latest Apple product often casts a grimm shadow. But it looks promising that at least these new Mac pro's are for large part built in the USA.
  11. Dear forum members. I have a problem on how to verify my new Komputerbay 1000x(32GB) cards writespeed. I do not have the 5DIII so that I could use the built in benchmark but I do have Lexar USB 3 CF card reader and 5DII (it is my understanding that the 5DII is speed limited) Testing methodology: Lexar USB 3 card reader connected via USB 3 port. Software H2testw 1.4 (Which seems to be a reasonable card speed testing program). Result: I get only 61.5 MB/s write speed with my Komputer Bay card So while I have no way of knowing how high is the Card reader is able to write in the first place to know for sure that I'm not limited by the reader. Does anyone have the said reader and experience in it's write speed? The Lexar card reader product page says it's UDM7. So I suppose the card reader is not at it's limit while writing that ~61.5 MB/s http://www.lexar.com/products/lexar-professional-usb-30-dual-slot-reader?category=203 A secondary observation about SD Komputer Bay SD-cards. I bought Komputer Bay 64GB 600x SD cards. The card says 90MB/s read / 40MB/s write speed. The above meantioned program (H2testw) gives a write speed of about 32-35MB/s for those. While tested on the Lexar USB3 reader.   The problem i'm facing with those cards is A dritfwood hacked GH2 says the card is too slow for recording at HI mode. The low mode works which is about half of the data rate. Would anyone have any input on this problem? I am some what familiar about the GH 2 hacks limitations but I*m quite NOOB. Cosidering the datarate at the HI mode should be inside the 32MB/s range. The card testing software if anyone is interested. http://www.heise.de/download/h2testw.html
  12. Or it just takes a corporate titanic a while to come up with a response.  I would save all the builds one bothers to snatch up. Just in case. Even tho if Canon tried to use layewers etc to stop this .. it would shoot it self on the foot. And who knows Canon might be partially of fully behind it. Talk about creating a phenomenon. .   A quessing game.. that in the end is some what irrelevant.  All the time spent on quess work might be spent doing videos instead. :P
  13. Besides it's two years. And the price of capture media is no longer as relevant as it is right now. 4tb WD hdd's will be out this year (the non black ones) 1000x cards will drop 50% in price in a year. Unless they really inflate the dollar and then it's not about the cameras anymore it's about beeing able to buy food.  RAW is here to stay. Caling it freakish is emotional response.
  14. Perhaps it's a printer with a 640x480 raw videocamera.  :D  Canon havent really impressed me in the recent times.
  15.   Argh it sucks to be a spectator. My fast cards have yet to arrive to me. :(   To Uninexus I say Hasswell is nice at least in one thing. The new 1150 mobos have minimum of 6 x Sata III ports (future proofing)..  I would choose a model with a thunderbolt port/ports on it.  What comes to the CPU it self. It might be beneficial on the long run. If some one optimizes properly for it. Perhaps Adobe Premiere Pro 7 (the fcken cloud version might use it's code extensions)   SPEED is everything Obey your speed .. needs. AS it turns out the world of RAW likes speed.
  16.   I have a image of Nikon in my mind where there is bunch of Japanese suits straring at a wall .. the wall has a window with a guy offering a suit case full of money (the guy is smiling and offering the case towards the japanese suits). Near the wall is a ladder but the Japanese suits cannot make up their mind who should go and use it. Instead they keep on nodding to each other like an piece of code that cannot understand the problem it's suppose to solve. So the suits keep turning and staring each other rather than go get the money.    Now who in this story is Nikon and who is us?.. . quite straight foward :)
  17.     I'm not saying the V1 does not have it's merits as novelty art making machine. At a price of 200euros for the kit it's quite good deal even tho one needs to buy a Flash to make it usable camera for general purpose photography. I seldom buy a camera just for one function. Unless it's Brand is BlackMagic.   How ever I would and I will spend my time from now on playing with Canon camera based raw video. The 1 sec limit is a BIG one for me. And with Canon Raw I have plenty of good glass to choose from allready. If the NIkon recorded 10 seconds and had panasonic 12-35 2.8 like zoom glass I might reconsider playing more with it.
  18. I't s such a shame that there is no 1 cpu  1.6x crop Canon body with a compacth Flash slot. This Art Zoom Sigma and say 60D with a CF slot would make for amazing RAW video combination. Atm a speedbooster + blackmagic camera seems like the best option for the lens in video use.   Photo use wise a Nikon 7100 + this  18-35 Sigma is made of WIN.
  19. Indeed. the funny thing about this whole ordeal is ... What on earth will canon release next. I mean for instance do they think they can just do minimal video feature upgrades and sell alot. Will they try to make hardware locks for future cameras or provide even better hacker friendly products. Say 5D mark IV with 2  Sata III ports.. ;)
  20.   LOL. Yeah I bought a V1 as well. It's just a shame that the kit-lens is piece of crap.  Alot of Purple Fringe. The camera it self is good how ever and for a price of 215€ you cannot go wrong. If only they sold the good lenses at price level more fitting for their use .. Like the 32mm 1.2 should cost 300-500 euros.   In a sense what comes to EOSHD readers beeing on the edge of tech. I consider my self going backwards since I just bought a GH2 :)
  21. Thanks Julian for this test.   I'm quite on the edge of understanding the 50D and 5D mark II's raw video quality. I saw very high Moire problems in your earlier video. There is allso weird looking hot pixel like problems in places.. Example the plant shot (look at the ride side plants) 1:08 (aprox).  http://vimeo.com/67023056   since I have mark II I'm very much interested in these tests. A more broad side by side test with various challenges would be very usefull. To see how they can handle it. It would be helpfull in order to understand the limitations of each camera.   Anyways thanks again.. all videos are highly valued by all of us who are following this development. :D
  22. I see few discussion threads around the web for hacking a connector from the pins inside the camera (cf pins) into a SSD or HHD. People seem to be confused in one thing and thinking that they could use regular IDE-harddrives. Where as in reality a IDE-harddrive is not even 80MB/s in consistent writing speed.  I would only Tinker with a proper SSD like Samsung 830, 840 , Crucial M4, M500 series. The power draw of the SSD might a choosing factor as well.   And when I had made up my mind about it.. Komputerbay 1000x 64GB CF cards are out from Amazon.de.
  23. Then I found this. http://www.iso1200.com/2013/04/are-you-ready-for-diy-movi-2-axis.html   The chinese have more or less allready done it. Perhaps not quite tho. At least there are options for GOPRO's.
  24. Where is Sandisk and their 1000x cards.. etc I'm actually expecting that the 1000x cards should come down in price quite soon.   On the same note.. It would be good and helpfull if some one was able to test the Transcend 1000x card wheter it works fast enough 5D Mark III raw video. Transcend's CF-cards n my experience have been reliable as a brand.
  25. Isnt the 5D mark II such that will not allow shooting when memory card space is open. Time to drill a hole there ? :)   About the fast storage options. There is Crucial M500  960GB SSD for about 513 Euros.   http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/info/p841889_960GB-Crucial-M500-2-5Zoll--6-4cm--SATA-6Gb-s-MLC-asynchron--CT960M500SSD1-.html
