  1. Cheers thanks. I agree with your opinion there needs to be a smaller solution - even a 5" would be great. I don't like the FS-RAW license thing you have to do - I think we're due past that part in product design where we have to pay more on top to just get the functions we want to unlock, but obviously not. Also I prefer the U.I of the Atomos - the Odyssey looks a bit 1990s in comparison. I enjoy having nice U.I. From the research I've done, apparently the Shogun Inferno will do the 4k120fps burst, because the recorder now does 4k60fps (this is what the burst is wrapped in). Not absolutely sure though, no idea how to actually ask Atomos themselves.
  2. My company is looking at grabbing an FS5 with the Shogun Inferno for a super duper all-rounder package - yet details seem to be scarce about how these work together. My understanding from reading various comments and reviews on FS-RAW is that the Shogun Inferno will do everything the Odyssey 7Q does. Anyone heard anything different? Also, my other reservation is the ergonomics of having the Atomos on the very small FS5. I love a large screen, however I'm thinking of the best way to make this ergonomic for handheld video, I don't use sticks often. Pictures I've seen look a bit silly with some spidery type magic arm with an Atomos Recorder looking like it's flattening the FS5, like a big elephant sat on a mouse. There's a bit of footage out there for FS5 RAW/ProRes - not a lot though. Anyone seen anything decent shot with this?
  3. Thanks for the info. What's the quality like when viewing on a smartphone/iPad? I can't seem to find an example of what it looks like online with the camera. I can completely understand your suggestion of getting the look in camera, however I'm an absolute grading nut. It's part of the process I enjoy the most, so having go profiles, LUTs and other grading tools are right up my street. There are limitations for me with the in-camera look for example, I can't stand crushed shadows, blown out highlights, steep roll-off and over sharpened images that are paramount with non-Log modes/profiles. I like it smooth. Philip Bloom certainly managed to get a cinematic feel in the images, even though they do look a teeny little bit too Film Converty.
  4. Awesome - thanks for the info. The important thing for me is how the camera operates with a 5" SmallHD 501 and whether the the 4k footage can be pushed to look, ahem "organic, cinematic, filmic"... y'know, those words we use to describe the feel of a cinematic image.
  5. Awesome, did you end up buying it from that link I sent you? How are the files responding to your C-log emulation? How good is the HD 120fps? Have you tried a small monitor on the hot shoe? (need to know what the camera displays). What stands out about it as opposed to the A7SII? (my current small form factor weapon). As you can see, I'm after information from users as I'm seriously considering it.
  6. This is a very interesting development by Panasonic, however the details of the camera are far too scarce to get overly excited. Such as: 1. Does it have IBIS (in 4k or just 1080 or nothing)? 2. Can it output 4k60p 10bit over HDMI? 3. Codec/bitrate? 4. Dynamic range? 5. The actual image quality itself - this is usually the pitfall of the "spec monster" cameras.
  7. I'm putting very serious consideration into the 1DX II. Have you tried Andrew's C-log profile yet, or James Millers DELUT version? I'd love to play with some footage and see how it responds to my often slightly aggressive grading style.
  8. I heard a rumour from a trusted source, who I just made up this minute, that the Panasonic GH5 will also have a "Hollywood Mode". What this means it that by turning on "Hollywood Mode", the sensor organically triples in image performance and whatever you are shooting looks like a Hollywood film instantly. The only issue with this mode is that it's in a buffer mode that records half a second per clip, and the file is 500GB in 4k. So by stitching together a 2 second clip, it would be 2TB. Sadly, the final output is limited to 4:2:0 8bit - so it requires a lot of skill to get Hollywood Mode right. Also Sony will announce their Sony A7F camera alongside their lineup. The "F" stands for "fire". What this means is that you can shoot video in 6k, and the camera takes advantage of the heat generated by6k recording using Stacked CMOS Ignition Sensor technology. This uses the heat to ignite some flames in front of the sensor, and the inner chrome finish on the mount reflects gorgeous light leaks between the back element and the sensor. Another trusted source who is very unreliable said Canon will release a groundbreaking huge surprise with the 5DC-M. The camera is a full frame mirrorless camera for the Cinema EOS range, targeted at previous 5D and 1DC video shooters. The camera records in 4k 10 bit 4:2:2 up to 60fps, and HD up to 180fps in the XF codec. The camera can shoot in full framed Super 35mm in all modes. It also has DPAF, 5-axis in-camera stabilisation, Clog3 and 14 stops of dynamic range, as well as a new improved HDR mode. The unique class-leading features in the new 5DC-M include a now removable touchscreen back LCD which connects to the camera wirelessly, and videographers can use DPAF in very creative ways by using the LCD remotely for gimbals, jibs, sliders and handheld work when the operator is using the EVF. The camera will also come with an XC15 style XLR attachment that sits on the hotshoe. Another incredible feature is an open source software platform to unlock further features out of the camera, like raw video, Magic Lantern style. This is so users can customise the power of the camera to their liking - a massive step up from Canon's often conservative approach. This could mean 4k/60p raw! Before getting excited, the price is steep at $14500 for the body and it will never be available to buy. Ever.

  10. This isn't HD - it's like a pirated stream at 360p. That quality is absolutely terrible - my Canon XHA1 from 2008 shot better HD than this. To release this as a "launch movie" is crazy. Hopefully, like every camera launch movie, the person who made it hasn't done the camera justice.
  11. Indeed. The main reason I consider a Canon is color, which us why I'm interested in this camera. It's far beyond the Sony A7's (of which I own an A7SII), although lacks key video features. I guess this is something like a SmallHD 501 would sort out. The bitrate isn't much of an issue to me - just have a couple of Transcend 256gb Cfast 2 cards and transcode to ProRes straight from the card, deleting the MJPEG masters. Do you know if external monitors view the live view information overlay (f-stop, shutter, frame rate, autofocus) from the Canon 1DX II? Just wondering if you used the joystick for autofocus, that you could see what you were operationally doing on a monitor too?
  12. Although the colours are a little dull and James Millery muted (I guess that's the intention), there is absolutely no chance of my A7SII achieving those skin tones. Also the rather photographic motion is something my Sony can't get close to. I'm editing a music video filmed on the A7SII right now - I'm having a tough time with the skin tone on the female actress in the video. Very tough. I have to say I'm seriously, seriously tempted to jump onto the 1DX II ship. All my glass is EF mount. So tempted. My only serious reservation is the non-tilting screen. Wonder if this will be rectified with a SmallHD501 on the hot shoe - seems ideal with LUT support/exposure aids etc?
  13. A drone operator I know says he has a friend who works for Blackmagic, who told him they are working on a "drone camera". My reply was "what, another BMMCC?" to which he replied "sort of, but better - he wouldn't tell me anything else". Take that with a MAJOR pinch of salt, however it's probably highly likely we will see a new small camera from Blackmagic in the micro pocket range next year (shipping in July, haha).
  14. I'm really liking the footage from the X5R - it's quite a valuable asset WHEN THE SSD WORKS..... The SSD function is seriously flawed. The amount of error messages I get with it is horrendous. Spent a day last week trying to get the SSD to mount on my Mac - "invalid disk", "not a DJI cine device", "failed to recognise SSD", "there was a problem, try again"..... really annoying. Going to contact DJI and see what they say......
  15. This is exactly what I want from a canon stills camera. I have loads of EF lenses but can't use them to their full potential for stills on Sony.
  16. I have to say, I'm quite interested in this camera for stills and personal video stuff. Not bothered about the lack of 4k. 1080p is perfectly fine for a long while yet. If the price is good I'll probably pick one up! Question is... will the 5-axis work with EF lenses with the EF-M adapter?
  17. Yawn. Blackmagic are excellent value for money, and that's all there is to say really. If Blackmagic aren't "good enough", just use another brand. Simple.

  19. I use a 5" on the A7SII all the time. Pretty essential. The canon isn't articulated so some shots will be a big problem without a small monitor. I've been using my phone for the DJI X5R - the image that feed through is awful. Very soft, pixelated and weird colour. Judging focus is very hard. They need to work on that. Canon should make a touchscreen PDAF monitor for video shooters - or I guess thats the smartphone app?

  21. Yes, getting mixed up with PFAW for commercial drone work. I'm very interested in this function as I film a lot of fast moving musicians screaming down microphones and all sorts of stuff.
  22. I'm not a fan of the Sony A7S II's 120fps. I've spotted severe moire, dancing pixels, heavy aliasing, amplified noise and all sorts of blocky weirdness in many of the files. I do really like the A7S II but i don't love it. The 1DX II is a tasty looking beast. Need to see what the highlight rolloff is like. I'm going to rent the Canon and try it out.

The website says the price you see is final and goods are shipped from the UK for UK customers. I'm VAT registered, however this deal seems even cheaper after you claim the VAT back. What do you think?
  24. I've not used this lengendary PDAF yet. Is it really that good? How good? I'm actually having many thoughts about replacing my A7SII with the 1DX II for better colour, body, 4K 60p, stills and.... PDAF. Please feed me.
  25. The wonderful world of EOSHD. We can all be very critical of Canon, and so we should, however most of us still love them. Ive seen the 1DX II new for £4099 from UK stock. The temptation is rising.
