Canon will come again. Then Sony will. Then Blackmagic will. Then Nikon. Then GoPro. Then Nikon. Then RED. Then... well, it goes on forever. Spend more time on your ideas than arguing over camera brands. Who cares really? Go out there and use the most appropriate camera you have access to. :)

Does Cinema EOS mark the end of high spec Canon DSLR video?
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Because they have the Cinema EOS line. They position themselves in a different league. Arri has no sub $5000 camera, neither does RED. Neither does, errrr.... well, that's it. Canon likely want seasoned, well paid professionals to use their professional cameras - and price them accordingly, so the "Vimeo Test" crowd doesn't make their cameras look bad. (Ok, that last part is a joke). They will move eventually, everyone needs to get over it. Use something else under $5000. Plenty of options. 10 years ago I had a Nokia now I have an iPhone. Maybe in 10 years all filmmakers will be shooting on Samsung and Canon will be making digital fish for virtual fishtank printers with a cupholder. Life goes on. :) -
Does Cinema EOS mark the end of high spec Canon DSLR video?

I don't know what the point of this brand war is on this topic. If you want to spend money on a 1DC, go ahead. If you want to spend money on an A7S, go ahead. Buy whatever you want. Like whatever image you want. But don't bash each other in a war... it's just boring. I have my own preference for gear, and I'll give constructive advice to anyone. I might buy an A7S, because it has features I would benefit from creatively. "But what about the 1DC, it's great in low light!!??" Personally I don't have the cash for a 1DC, and besides, I couldn't justify the purchase if I did. The A7S would be fine, and I'd have much more money left for LENSES. My point being... instead of arguing, shouldn't those doing it speak more constructively about their choices and show examples of their work where the features of the "brand" has influenced the piece? -

But the C100 Mk II is not 4k. The Sony FS7 is. Problem solved, if you dare. ;) -

I shot a music video on a 1DC and the GH3. 50/50 footage between both cameras. The client loved it. The video was play listed on TV. No questions asked. I preferred the image on the 1DC. But had more fun with the GH3. Who cares... The video had semi-naked ladies in it! My point is, this fighting over brands is a complete waste of time. Knowledge of brands is not a waste of time. Spend more time with your favoured brand and carry on making stuff. -
The problem of sharing knowledge about camera's and editing.
Oliver Daniel replied to Stab's topic in Cameras
You must have very low confidence in your own ability to come out with this stuff. My clients don't come to me because of my secret tools. They come to me because I put much emphasis into the ideas and for my very stylised, visual style. They come to me for MY vision and how I apply that vision. My tool selection is just an ingredient of that vision. People who work with me share information, talk to each other, borrow stuff, debate, exchange skills, ask for advice - because we are collaborators who have strengths and weaknesses, and we help each other to make better stuff. This is simple, basic networking - you never know who you will need in future! I have no issues writing a blog post telling the whole wide world of amateurs and professionals about my entire music video production structure - from style to logistics. I'll be happy sharing because they will never have the same vision as me, and most importantly they may have something to share too which I can learn from and apply. The secret sauce is your very self. Your ideas, your style, your personality, your skill, your results - it is this that clients buy. Have confidence in this and what everyone else is doing doesn't matter. If nobody shared, nobody cared ;) -

Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Wow, this topic is on fire! I still shoot most of my stuff on my GH3. I get paid for it. Nobody complains. So the fact Canon have been reserved in their product features doesn't bother me in the slightest. It doesn't affect me at all. Yesterday I shot on the FS700. The fact any Canon camera can't do what this camera can do didn't change anything. I got my shots. Client was very happy. I think everyone needs to chill out. The options available now are ridiculous. Who cares what brand you use? Pick your camera, shoot and delight. :) -
Still can't make any judgement at all from the very few clips online. The one above used the cheap kit lens which is probably why the image is overly sharp and brittle. A few of the grades showed promising colour. I'd love to see a current owner try a more cinematic piece with better glass, actual people and decent lighting. I'd do it myself but I can't rent this camera anywhere at the moment. I see glimpses of promise in some of the clips but because all the clips are so quick and rushed, all opinions right now are a pinch of salt, thankful for the contributions though. :)

Like any camera, it's aways best to test it in your own hands. The above quick video has far to much contrast and deep shadows for my taste, but it doesn't mean this is the camera - I'm sure it's a creative choice by Andrew. I do see glimpses of the image which excites me, still, only user experience will determine if it's a suitable camera.

It's good to hear the opinion of someone who has used it. It looks great in the pictures and video, yet it's obviously made to look the business to drive sales. May work for some and not others. I can see the record button being an issue, why won't Sony enable recording from the shutter button? I know I'll be shooting with the A7S and Shogun fairly soon, so I'm looking for a solution like this one. I already have a rig suitable for "in-front" shooting, just that the addition of a Shogun will make it difficult to handle, hence my exploration of options.

This looks like an awesome rigging solution for A7S users shooting 4k with a Shogun: http://www.edelkrone.com/eu/5-modula-series A video here: Especially like the hand grip. Want!

I guess that could mean a substantial improvement of the 1080p/60 and 1080/120 modes on the Shogun.... -

Well I've heard that the 120fps from this camera is very impressive in 1080p. This is a super important feature for my music video work.... looking forward to seeing more stuff online and then I'll probably rent it for a job. Or not. Maybe. Is the sensor capable of 4k 60fps? If so, why the hell isn't it on the firmware? Sales would be silly high. -
Haha, just curious.... I know Helios are the way to go for this as they are madman lenses. I know that Matt Duclos started "Rokinon Raws" to give them more "character" by removing coatings, as some DP's have disliked them due to their "ordinary still lens look." There are many times when I don't require character lenses at all, and super sharp contrasty lenses are the best choice. Most of my work does require this weirdness though, approaching 200 music videos shot/edited now -and upping the style each time!
-
What kind of result would you get from removing the coatings on an FD lens (or re-applying different ones?) Would you get a "characteristic" result or just a big bag of crap?

The Next Big Indie Filmmaking Idea on Kickstarter: Lume Cube
Oliver Daniel replied to sanveer's topic in Cameras
Could easily do that no problem. They would also be great for A7S users who want to mould the lighting better on a night scene. Also really good for using a Go Pro in low light - or just use it as a torch if you get lost on the moors! (you should always stay on the road as there are wolves!) :D- 19 replies

Pointless thread. Leave Channing alone. He has muscles and stuff.

Andy recommended to me the Tokina 24-85mm f4, can get in FD mount, very cheap - "the Helios of zoom lenses." Canon 24-35L f3.5 is a fantastic lens, semi-interesting little flares but it's clinical and warm. Don't know any other FDs that fit this character category. All mine and sharp, contrasty and warm.
-
Canon FD has come up because they are cheap and a bit old. Performance wise, they do have a slightly more organic feel to the EF lenses, and are great for colours and contrast. (My FD 28mm f2.8 stinks, the blacks get crushed loads). Character - they have nothing on my old Russians like Helios, Asahi Pentax and Mir. These guys are lovely and fascinating. The FD's I have do flare a little, but you have to really work hard to make it look decent. The Canon FD 24-35L 3.5 can produce some semi-interesting flares. But mostly yes, they aren't the best for character. Great for usual stuff though! Rich - your Schidt Optiks (haha) look amazing - seem perfect for my uses. Will have to get some. With the SLR Magic 12mm MFT look, I think it just might be unique. Can be used macro and flares are insane. As I'm switching to a bigger sensor, just want to find it's equivalent. I love it so much, I cry about it sometimes. (ok, I don't. Just saying though!)

Samsung NX1 Review - The glory of technology

Shame about the 1080/60p.... I use that feature a lot on other cameras for subtle slow motion. I'll have to see it for myself. Would be a deal breaker otherwise. How close in greatness is it to the A7S? -
Cool! I'm looking to emulate the characteristic of the SLR Magic 12mm on MFT with a close subject in focus, on full frame and Super 35.... ...The result is spectacular, very powerful. I'm finding that I'm doing many shots, including close-ups with the SLR Magic 12mm as the look is so unique, and matches the emotion perfectly. You can get SO close and have a wide shallow background.

Canon FD glass is a bargain. Some peeps on here have more knowledge than myself about the SSC and non-SSC. Anyone? Still looking for that ultimate vintage lens for full frame (and Super 35) - wide angle (28mm) and close focus (like a macro)......

I was thinking the same thing. I'm curious about this camera too - it's just the H265 thing. Great codec, but when will the NLE's etc catch on? I agree lower contrast, vintage lenses would sing on this camera. Also want to see the 120fps! -

Yes!!! :D Thing is, I don't want it to be like that at all!! It's early days... (I mean, have you seen the early FS7 stuff online... oh dear!) -
Samsung NX1 Review - The glory of technology
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I'm still not convinced by the footage I've seen from this camera - still looking overly sharp, very brittle, crushed detail and quite artificial, didn't see this "filmic motion" others have spoke of here. That said, the features are not too far off ideal for my uses so I'd rather give it a go then set my opinion based on a few quick shots. I'd still like to see more.... ;)
