This is a very interesting camera. I would take it everywhere. I will buy it. -
SLR Magic 2x Anamorphic - my footage and first impressions
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I've been interested in these SLR Magic adapters for a while. Did they mention a price? Also, like someone else said above, most of the images in the footage look bent. Was this user error (since you've hardly had any time with it) or do they need to make some adjustments? -
Your rental house guy needs his head feeling - no offence. E mount is the most versatile mount on the market, you are not stuck to one brand of lens - loads of modern and vintage lens options. Don't take his word for it - E mount is awesome and there is nothing wrong with using adapters.

The UK pricing has been announced at £5599 + VAT. The C300 is £3000 more. The C500 is £7000 more. I can't see the logic of purchasing any C-line camera now, unless you can't go without Canon colour science. People interested in buying the URSA tank/microwave I'd expect to save more money and get this. Sony are crazy. Loving them this year!

This from RedShark News: http://www.redsharknews.com/business/item/2038-canon-7d-mark-ii-debuts,-but-what-does-it-mean "The reality Canon's 5D Mark II kicked off the HDSLR revolution, but it wasn't planned. In fact, it could be seen as a mistake, as the advanced (at the time) video capabilities of its DSLRs made those cameras popular amoung shooters, which likely ate into its pro video profits. With this latest version of the 7D, Canon refocused on the action photographer, all but ignoring the video advancements of competitors with similarly-priced cameras. When you take a step back from it, it makes sense; Canon sells far more equipment to photographers than video shooters, and why should its DSLRs compete directly against other Canon product categories like pro video? The big take-away may be that Canon is quietly removing itself from the DSLR video revolution that it accidentally started." I don't tend to get into this whole Canon and Nikon are Video Grandpa's when it comes to video, but the above makes sense. Can't some of us just accept Canon's business decisions and move custom elsewhere? At this rate, it sounds like some people would actually go into apocalyptic meltdown if the Canon 5D MK IV didn't have 4k video and that Canon have "lost the plot."

Big news - Samsung NX1 with 4K, 24p and **H.265 HVEC codec**
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Is it just me or is the online footage for this camera just not very good? The compositions are great, but the actual rendering of the images look very artificial and brittle. Is this Youtube's fault? When watching in 4k the moire and aliasing is absolutely shocking. If the translation to web is this bad then this isn't the camera for me. But cool to see another option! :D -
As I recall, it was Sony and Panasonic who put "DSLR technology" into a video camera form factor way before Canon (with the FS100 and AG100 teapot). Then Canon came out with this state of the art Cinema line and did very well, and still is...... ....Technology has developed since, and again, Panasonic and Sony are the ones currently innovating. Canon will be back, they are just waiting for the right moment to hit the market with a "groundbreaking" advance in their line up. To be honest, I don't think they will ever bring anything out to compete with the A7S and GH4, and all the later models. Eventually they will, but not for a long time. For video, it's all about the Cinema line. They will hit the market hard and it will be very popular. Nikon, who cares? :P

If true, it could be an incredible response to alternatives like the A7S, or Olympus' supposed firmware update. It would definitely be very interesting, although I could personally only manage 3-4 raw shots in my workflow. Would be a handy tool for the "money shots." Whatever is going on, nobody can really complain about what's going on with cameras at the moment. Even Canon and Nikon DSLR video users can't complain. They can use their lenses elsewhere  I think the Olympus rumor is the most compelling. What a package that will be!!
-
These rumors are just insane. The Olympus one (besides the complete feature list) seems most believable, but the GH4 one? Sounds like a spam bot email picking up lucrative wording and jumbling it into one. Raw on GH4? Why is there nothing between the GH4 and Varicam? It's a massive gap! (I was expecting an FS700/C300 competitor at some point).
-
The rumors are going round like wildfire. Another list of features has popped up on 43 rumors... http://www.43rumors.com/ft4-one-more-e-m1-firmware-upgrade-info/#disqus_thread This camera can be bought for £699 in UK at this website http://slrhut.co.uk/product/ID1576C68/google?mkwid=gzyO1j17&pcrid=40141357916&gclid=CJvEoezd3sACFZTLtAodLSIA6g I really hope this turns out to be true (and the image quality isn't shit), it would be a right little creative beast for many, many shoots.

I'm going to have to find a way to get this camera. Hands down the best camera release I've seen since, ever. It would cover everything and I don't think I'd need to rent again for many years. I know people go on about Canon and Nikon, however I think there is still a gap/opportunity for Panasonic. What do they have between the GH4 and the new Varicam 35? It would be very interesting to see a response here too, what do you think?
-
This camera was made for photographers, not videographers or both.
-
Cheapest I've seen the EM-1 is £750 brand new. I'll get one if this firmware update is true.
-
Well, this is the best camera release I've seen in years. It has pretty much everything and a lovely design - perfect partner for the A7S. Would be superb for my business. Better get back to work... money is needed.
-
Hi, looks a lot better! This is a minor thing, but I think your logo (and the banner) deserves to evolve with the web design - it looks out of place in this new modern world! I recently changes my entire website and got the logo done, makes the old look really dated! ;) I know it's a ball ache but these little things show evolution. Go on, you know you want to....

Some thoughts on the possible "Sony FS700 Mark II"
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
At last, a new FS700! I use the FS700 on loads of music video projects for the slow motion function, however, I always get agitated with the thin codec and how the camera handles highlights (which is just downright terrible for a camera that price.) The ergonomics, haha, shall I bother? Well, it may mean the Fs700 comes down in price (cheapest I've seen is £4299.95 brand new - http://www.slrhut.co.uk/product/ID569C6/nex_fs700r-_Sony-NEX_FS700R-Super-35-Camcorder-_Body-Only_-FS700-/) That said, the other functions make up for it. Bit confusing with the F5 above it though. What's going on there? -
Come With Me (We Are One) - an EOSHD music video for DJ Paul Van Dyk
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Good stuff. My only critique is that I felt the edit needed to be a lot tighter and rhythmic with the music, I know this was upto the record label! Hope to see more videos soon. :) -
5 reasons the Olympus E-M1 will NOT get 4K video!
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Unconfirmed rumours and conspiracy theories about features are a waste of time and distract away from the tools available to use right now, as well as your time to be actively creative and make some stuff. ;) If it can't be bought, doesn't matter. Life goes on. :D -
The Sony A7S, X70 and Atomos Shogun at Pinewood Studios
Oliver Daniel replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Nice article dude. Couldn't help but notice your comments on needing a focus system you can use by not taking your hands away from the handles. I backed a project on Kickstarter called The Silencer by an American company called 24shots. It's a focus system which can control both the focus and the zoom (in different models) by pressing triggers that are fixed to the handles, so you don't need to take your hands away. I haven't got mine yet, but it seems very neat and not many people know about it! Should be delivered soon so won't mind sharing my experience. Links: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/24shots/silencer-follow-focus-system?ref=nav_search http://www.24shots.com/ I'm pretty much set on the a7S but it has to pass my rental test first on one of the shoestring projects..... (drum roll)... -
I've been looking for an opportunity to purchase an affordable small camera with a larger sensor, wide dynamic range, decent low light, high frame rates and not as essential but curious - a 4k option. Sounds just like the a7S? I own a GH3 to film the bulk of my work. It's absolutely fine really. I only ever buy a new camera if I'm looking for something drastically different for creative possibilities. A breath of fresh air. But don't quite have the cash yet to get the a7S. So until then.... my GH3 will continue to be my beast. The imaging tool of experimental techniques and new discoveries. The gadget to help me financially acquire a more beastly gadget for my work. And it goes on....and on....
-
@Michael1... You missed the part where I said it's ok to compare the cameras in perceived performance, but I'm puzzled why some people ask "Should I shoot with a7s, GH4 or 5D raw?" I guess it's ok to ask the question, however, they are totally different.... Those considering a 5D with the raw hack should be looking at Blackmagic, another affordable raw shooter. I'm pleased that Andrew included the raw shooting cams in the test to compare with the performance of the a7S. It shows it is very capable and will be able to achieve very high quality footage in the right hands.
-
I agree with Quirky on a lot of his points. I'm not sure why 5D RAW comes into this at all... It's a massively different kettle of fish. Although I think it's ok to show how cameras such as the a7S can match it in perceived performance. I'm very close to ordering an a7S because I want a different look and toolset compared with my GH3. Rolling shutter, weird record button, odd skin tones on a7S.... Doesn't faze me. There will be work arounds... Love to learn and just shoot. I'll be renting the a7S first though. Don't know why more people don't try before they buy. Did this with the GH3. Loved it, bought it. Tried the BMCC, thought it was ok, didn't buy it. Same goes for pretty much everything. Also... You can't judge a camera just by watching a few Vimeo clips and tests, as this depends on skill and creativity. It's cool to see it's capabilities in the right hands, but to write it off just because someone had filmed something with bad rolling shutter or yellow skin is a little silly. Love camera and what they can do.... I'm just more interested in the subject of the filming :)
