"In optics, the f-number (sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, or relative aperture[1]) of an optical system is the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil." So when you change aperture, you are changing the size of the entrance pupil. The best way to do this is usually inbetween elements, but you can also do it in front of the lens. When you put the iscorama in front of the lens, you are making a new maximum aperture. Taking Brian example, 85/36 = 2.4. Choosing values under 2.4, like 1.2,1.8,2 won't give you a larger aperture, but going 2.8,4,5.6 will have an affects obviously. But there is another problem, in modern lenses the front element is often very big, bigger than the entrance pupil, so although you aren't limiting the aperture you are still interfering with the way the lens is working, this will create vignette. In front of the lens is not the best place to put the aperture iris. I guess Brian can explain this last point a lot better.

Nice, kowa 16h?

I think besides fps, shutter angle is also important or even more important. 1/1000 is probably the minimum you want, but I guess the fastest possible will give better results. I might be wrong because I have no insights, but in photography you would go the highest shutter speed possible so you can see what's happening, not just some blurred mess.

That camera already exists, it's called t3i

I just want a camera that gives files that look like what comes out of an alexa, I think samsung could do that without much trouble.

I quote you on this.

But the 2.5 is a vivitar, isn't it?

Mhhh, I love the smell of neurosis in the morning.

Thanks Volker! The lenses I enjoy the most are 35mm and 105mm pre ai nikkors. I have the rest of the pre-ai set, but these are the ones I enjoy due to focal length and character.

Lol whatever, I'll leave the thread to you so you can write in it like a journal and keep the lenses thread free of your new discoveries.

Shure you can blur the color channel and get shitty colors but you can do that on any camera. I'd rather buy a 5dmkii.
-
I have the d800 and color noise is horrendous over iso 1600.

I think there are SD contollers and cards that do way more than 30MB/s continously.

Forgot about the first post, don't get a fullframe camera, NX1 is fine. What do you miss on the NX1??

Canon Nifty Fifty 50mm f1.8 ii (Full Frame Edge Skew Effect)
Nikkor replied to exomonkeyman's topic in Cameras
This doesn't mean that lenses with small diameter do have to give swirley bokeh that strong. The contax 50 1.7 I think does'tt have the problem that strong and is a modern lens with modern coatings, have a look at flickr, that's the best way. -
Canon Nifty Fifty 50mm f1.8 ii (Full Frame Edge Skew Effect)

You have to find a lens with a larger front diameter, these give less swirley bokeh. -
Btw, what camera do you currently have?

Depends on what kind of video you want to do. The d800 is as bad for video as the canon 5d mkii, maybe slightly better in resolution and a little bit worse in highlight rolloff and "motion cadence". I think if you just want the fullframe look, get a speedbooster on some mirrorless aps-c camera. This would be the cheapest option, no AF. http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/18504-canon-eos-m-focal-reducer-fullframe-raw-for-300/

I have seen d800 on ebay going for 900-1000€, I live in Spain and people don't earn 250-300€/month (maybe one of these shitty internships), I don't think it's different in portugal.
-
The d800 is going pretty damn cheap these days, it's the reason why I haven't sold mine (too good for the money they give you).

Haven't talked again with the person so no idea what he's finally going for. Anyway, thanks for all the replies. What seems to be clear is that there is still no good answer, the technology seems to be there, but all the products still have some major compromises, even when spending several grand on a a7sii or a7rii leaves you with an uncomplete product.
-
It's probably a good option, but I think it also needs the penis factor (it's about artsy stuff so I guess it needs penis factor). And yes, the zoom is too short.
-
Well, I guess stills. If he wants it in video too I guess the 70d is the only option, remember it's 800€... If not I would just tell him to get a d750 or a a7sii/a7rii
-
It goes for around 700€ used, but the last time I used one the autofocus was terrible. (I know, moiree, but he's not going to shoot anything landscapy). The bm is a no-go because he needs stills, the a6000 is ok but I don't know if I want to recommend a sony to anyone anymore
