  1. @Fritz Pierre My bad - I think you’ve got the portable Porsches, I meant the desktop ones.
  2. @Fritz Pierre Have you owned those Porsche drives for over three years? Because I've had problems with at least three of mine. I'm having better luck with the D2 Thunderbolt drives so far...
  3. @Tim Berglund Use EditReady or optimize the files upon import until Apple issues an update. Also, it’s always a good to search for the relevant thread before posting a new one, ie

@Mat Mayer That Sigma 60mm f/2.8 looks insane. I just might have to pick one up today if I can find it here.

@gethin According to several reviews I’ve read, the Sigma absolutely destroys the competition both in terms of sharpness and in having chromatic aberration well under control.
  6. Is the Sony a security risk for your Mac? Probably! According to Diglloyd: There were/are issues with Sony’s updater for the A7R III with macOS High Sierra. Sony claims to have fixed these issues as of today: If the System Software Updater does not support macOS 10.13 (High Sierra), you need to download "DriverLoader_1013" from this website and run it on your computer first. First, go back to the previous page to download the System Software Updater, then follow the below process to perform the update. ... It’s a mess IMO. No user should have to jump through these hoops. After 3 years, Sony persists in this awful policy of requiring administrator level access on the computer to update the camera. Given Sony’s checkered history and massive security breach not that long ago, one might be wise to always wait a week or two just in case malware slips in, since the Sony updater is a potential root kit exploit. I dislike this risk so much that I go to the trouble of cloning the startup drive, booting off it on a spare laptop, then running the update, then wiping out (formatting) the temporary startup drive. It’s quite the nuisance, but worth the trouble for the day Sony is compromised again. source I kind of like the way my Fuji and Panasonic updates work: just copy the update to an SD card, insert in camera and run the update. It may be kind of old-fashioned, but it works.

@Mat Mayer I can't really compile a best-of list, but my two favorite lenses at the moment are the Sigma 16mm and the Olympus 75mm. The frame grab below was shot with the Olympus.

Some random observations about Veydra, Fuji, Sigma and Olympus. A comment by a viewer who'd watched my YT video, 'Why Aren't More People Talking About These Lenses?' was so spot-on that I just had to share it here. These lenses will be that sort of thing where they will go unnoticed while the company is still in business. Then one day Veydra will close shop and all of a sudden their lenses will be hip with chic film makers. Everyone will be trying to find used ones and a Veydra lens will be like the Holy Grail...they will go for crazy amounts of money... Also, while it makes little difference to me at the moment, since I'm not shooting Fuji, I found Lee Zavitz's review of the 80mm f/2.8 especially interesting, both regarding the resolution and focusing speed of the lens. For one, he says it must be the sharpest lens he's ever used in his life, which wasn't much of a surprise given the reviews I'd already read and watched. As far as the focusing speed goes however, in his tests, it appeared that the 50-140mm was even faster. Personally, I find AF-C unusable with my X-T2 and any lens regardless of speed, because I find the focus seems to jump from one spot to another rather than transitioning smoothly. And even though Lee had never shot with the 90mm f/2, he was pretty certain he'd prefer it to the 80mm f/2.8 for portraiture for at least two reasons: one being that he finds the 80mm is sharp to the point of being unflattering; the other reason being the highly unattractive swirly bokeh the 80mm produces at wider apertures. Regarding Sigma, many viewers of not only my channel but every other one as well, were interested in how easy it is to focus the 16mm f/1.4 DC DN manually. I found it practically unusable, but that would go for practically every lens I own except for the Voigtlander 17.5mm and the Veydras. One angry viewer even asked how I could dare say the Sigma's manual focus wasn't good when several other reviewers were saying the exact opposite. I'm guessing these commenters had never used a mechanical lens in their life - anyone who's ever handled a Nokton or any cinema lens would realize immediately just how shitty FBW lenses are for manual focusing. And just how many of these self-professed YT experts have shot narrative work and tried pulling focus with one of these FBW miracles? Fewer than .001 percent I imagine. Lastly re: Olympus. The videos I've made about the couple of Zuiko lenses I own have probably been the most contentious of any I've shared on YouTube. One video in which I recommend the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 as the very best lens for the GH5 has received more hate than practically any review I've ever uploaded. But I should clarify that at the time I made the video, many were looking for a lens with more reach to supplement their Panasonic 12-35mm or Olympus 12-40mm zoom lenses. Anyhow, I've been working on a project now, shooting models using LED lights in the evening, and I started off by using the exceptional Leica Nocticron. But it just wasn't producing the results I was after, which is something resembling say, the Sony A7R II outfitted with an 85mm f/1.4 G Master. And I've found that the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 fits the bill nicely. It's crazy sharp, has beautiful bokeh, nice color, the whole bag of chips. As an aside, there still appear to be many who absolutely despise 4K and everything it stands for; hurrah for them: but when it comes to sharing screen grabs from individual frames of projects I'm working on, the extra resolution is impressive. Click on the image below three times to see what I'm talking about.
  9. @kaylee Sorry to hear you're having so many problems. If you haven't done so already, I can highly recommend the Apple Support Community. Post screen grabs, Blackmagic Speed Tests, whatever. Lots of helpful people there. I'm fairly certain they can help resolve whatever issues you're having. FWIW, I'm running High Sierra on a 2017 5K iMac and haven't had any hiccups yet.
  10. In Vietnam, genuine blu rays and dvds are unavailable. Shops only sell dvd rips off the internet. Around $1 or $2 I believe. And most retailers won’t ship movies or music to Vietnam. I thought, well certainly I should be able to pay for a download... wrong again! hehe I used to be gaga over Korean movies and television dramas. I lived there for five years. Most theaters didn’t have English subs, and tv didn’t either. So my only choice was to buy dvds and blu rays. Oh, and film festivals always had subs. Back then, I used to write about movies, so having a copy was pretty indispensible.
  11. I pay the monthly fee, never watch it. all their customers should be like me. buying discs can be addictive too. i paid thousands of dollars to amass a crazy collection of dvds. when a new edition came out, i’d buy that one too. then came blu ray. tons of money out the window. sold a bunch on ebay, but took a big hit. collecting dvds is a waste of money. i much preferred renting back in the day. anyhow, not sure what you mean if it’s not on netflix, it not existing. and keeping netflix doesn’t mean you can’t purchase the occasional disc. my subscription only runs $11/month for HDR content. My rent includes internet, so that’s not an issue. Maybe it’s expensive where you live. if you really are addicted to netflix though, good luck weaning yourself off it.
  12. The 50 is great bcs it’s so small, easy to fly on a gimbal too. but i love practically every fuji lens I’ve owned. If i shot with the xt2 more, the next lens on my list would without question be the 16mm f/1.4
  13. @red The AF on the 80mm f/2.8 is noiseless, lightning fast and accurate, with no back or front focus issues.
  14. It’d end up costing a lot of money (and lost revenue) and you’d get infinitely less exposure. The last time I checked, alternative video hosting services didn’t offer a tenth of the features YT or even Vimeo have. If it was as simple as that, many YouTubers would have already left ages ago.
  15. @cantsin No. V90 cards are required to be able to sustain a minimum sequential write speed of 90MB/s, but the Angelbird can only write 56MB/s or so according to Blackmagic. Whether that is overkill for the GH5 or not I can’t say, but I don’t buy cards just for today any more than I buy lenses for just one camera, and I would expect a $250 V90 card to work with any other cameras I might get in the future, even 8K.
  16. Vimeo takes centuries to buffer for me in Vietnam, so I never use it. @webrunner5 Ever heard of YouTube? ?
  17. @Michael Ma Sorry, I only own one Panasonic card, but the rumor is false. I can record 400Mbps to both the Panasonic and Angelbird at once. Anyhow, since Angelbird position themselves as high end manufacturers of storage solutions for professionals, they should be held to a higher standard.
  18. I'm assuming @IronFilm is just buying this tripod for his own personal use, and there's nothing wrong with that. But I can just about guarantee that something will fail down the road, or greatly disappoint. You get what you pay for. I bought a highly recommended rather inexpensive LED light a while back, the Yongnuo YN216, and after only using it two or three times, now the dial that adjusts the light output no longer works properly. I purchased an SD card for half the price of the Panasonic while I was in Singapore, and it failed the first time I used it. A cheap tripod head by Weifeng started dripping goo after only a couple years of light use. A dry cabinet with no interior light, adjusting the humidity level had to be done by reaching for a tiny dial in the very back of the unit, and the meter, which was battery powered, died every two years like clockwork, and the power cord decided to explode on me one day for no apparent reason. And then there's all the other cheap trash I bought inexpensively, which hasn't failed, but which hasn't necessarily worked as well as I needed. Unlike camera bodies, a tripod should be a lifetime investment. I would just bite the bullet, purchase tickets to Australia or the nearest dealer, buy the gear you need and fly back to NZ. In any case, that's what I do every few months. @Cinegain (obviously photo-shopped and for certain used without permission of the copyright owner)
  19. If you're not shooting 400Mbps ALL-I with dual recording, I don't think you're adding anything to the discussion at all. This is a follow-up on my experience with the Angelbird 128GB V90 card. I bought the Panasonic 128GB V90 and Angelbird 128GB V90 SD cards. Both cards cost roughly $250.00 when I purchased them in Singapore a couple of months ago. To the best of my knowledge, the Panasonic retails for around $500 in North America, while the Angelbird has seen a price drop to $200 or so. My first Angelbird card failed on me, so I had to return it, which took almost exactly two weeks from the time I licked the postage stamp till the time the new one arrived at my door. The new one seemed to work. but I noticed it took much longer to copy the files to my hard drives than the Panasonic, so I decided to do a little experiment. I shot ten minutes of video (33GB) to both cards simultaneously and timed how long each one took to copy to a folder on my 2017 5K iMac. The Panasonic took 5 minutes 51 seconds, while the Angelbird took 6 minutes 2 seconds. Using Blackmagic’s Disk Speed Test, the Angelbird measured 55.7MB/s write and 82.4MB/s read speeds, whereas the Panasonic measured 75.3MB/s write and 89.2MB/s read speeds. So given the unreliability of the Angelbird as well as its inferior performance/price ratio, I cannot in good conscience recommend it. Of course, many forum members have had success shooting 400Mbps ALL-I with other less expensive cards like Adata and Sandisk.
  20. I don't really care what Casey Neistat shoots with, his videos are ugly. Oliver Daniel's work with the GH5 is exceptional, the music is pretty awesome too. I love my GH5, wish I had Oliver's talent to go with it.
  21. The Bright Tangerine Titan magic arm I’m getting next week costs more than that tripod. ?
