But this is not exactly the same. Panasonic is passing off lenses like the 12mm as designed by Leica for Panasonic. That is, if the lens was in fact designed by Sigma.

Why I feel Panasonic treats all but GH5 users as a second class

I’m not following the logic here either. -
I've been shooting a bit with ETC mode when I realized it was actually giving me more like a 1.37x crop rather than 1.4x. A comparison I did recently between the Sigma 30mm DC DN in ETC and the Leica 42.5mm f/1.2 showed that there was significantly less crop than 1.4x. The 30mm should have been 84mm with ETC, but it was 82mm. And shooting ETC with the Olympus 75mm, the camera was saying it was a 206mm 35mm equivalent. So I did some quick math and it turns out the crop factor is more like 1.37x, not 1.4x. That is, assuming there is zero crop in 4K mode, which most reviewers seem to corroborate. However, right now, I've got the Leica 42.5mm on my GH5, and shooting without ETC, it's saying it's a 99mm 35mm focal length equivalent, which obviously is not correct. Has anyone else checked this out? There seems to be a bug here or something...

Readers might be interested in my brief email exchange with a shop in Singapore, where I'll be flying tomorrow to pick up the Veydra 85mm T2.2. I wrote them, and a fellow named Dennis emails me, saying they carry the Veydras, but he'll have to check stock to see if they've got the 85mm. It's taking too long, so I call the shop directly and speak with a guy named Gary, who informs me they've got the lens, so I go ahead and book a flight for Monday morning. The following day, I get an email from Dennis, telling me they've only got the 25mm, 35mm and 50mm. I just write him back, saying no worries, a salesman is holding the lens for me and I'll be picking it up the following week. What the heck!

@Cinegain I've said many times before, I wish Panasonic had partnered with Sigma rather than the esteemed German company - we'd have excellent optics at a much lower price. But now, it looks like they're having their cake and eating it, too. At least the 12mm is assembled in Japan, and not in China, Thailand or Vietnam! I have to agree, however, the look of the Leicas is extraordinary, and not only when compared to other m4/3 lenses... Then again, if Sigma really did design what is unquestionably one of the very finest lenses in the micro four thirds lineup...

PL 12mm f/1.4 actually designed by Sigma?

Next week, we'll be uploading my first sample footage from the Veydra 85mm T2.2.

Great work!

@Rinad Amir Thanks! I posted it here already. ?

As promised, a comparison between the $1,600 Nocticron and the $335 Sigma 30mm f/1.4. According to the camera, with ETC, the Sigma is actually an 82mm equivalent, so based on this test and that of the Olympus 75mm, ETC crop is closer to 1.37x.

We’re trailblazers for sure. I’ve watched thousands of camera tests online, uploaded one or two lens comparisons and field tests myself shot with a handful of Lumix cameras, and not once have I heard anyone mention ‘cinematic motion’. I’ve never seen it come up in a single camera review either. Respected DPs have been using the GH* cameras for years now and I can’t recall any of them complaining about ‘motion cadence’. Likewise during the Zacuto shootout of 2012, where the lowly GH2 was up against the likes of the Arri Alexa, the Red Epic and the Sony F65. To the best of my knowledge, it’s not something that’s ever appeared in the literature of the leading camera manufacturers. The human ear is more sensitive to changes in audio frequency, but even though I’ve delivered videos shot at 23.976 as 24p, I’ve never come across anyone who’s even noticed.

Tomorrow we compare the Sigma Contemporary 30mm f/1.4 DC DN in ETC to the venerable Leica Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2.
-
But Apple’s saying the iPhone 8 has a larger, faster sensor.
-
Several times I've delivered videos at 24p that were recorded at 23.976 fps and vice versa: not once has anyone pointed out that anything was amiss. The only time anyone noticed something was a video where I shot at the wrong shutter angle. And several of those videos even included speech! So I'd say in my list of priorities, it's pretty low. Edit: Ditto for all the 24p videos I’ve shot at 1/50th sec.

Careful not to overwork your actors.
-
@Matt Kieley I think you might be on to something there.

Jordan tests the 12mm in the TCSTV video, showing that speed affects the focus.
-
Have you tried any of the Olympus lenses with clutch manual focus?

In the upper right, tap on the sideways ‘v’ with three balls and the link will appear.

To those interested in picking up cinema lenses, I'd strongly advise getting a set of three as a bare minimum, as the real advantage over stills lenses, (aside from long focus throw, stepless apertures, reliable markings, minimal breathing and on and on), is having uniform front diameters and gear placement, allowing painless switching of lenses without messing around with the matte box, rails and follow focus, as well as consistency of T stops and color rendition, making matching shots much simpler.

@Jonesy Jones Bizarrely, over at the Duclos Lenses website, under tech specs for the 19mm T2.6, the max aperture is still listed as T2.2. My best guess is that they’d intended to release a faster lens but for whatever reason, couldn’t. The 19mm is relatively recent, so I wouldn’t count on a second version. For those not familiar with the Veydras, all but the 12mm and 16mm can cover an APS-C sensor. In other news, Ron Avery, designer of the Veydras, along with Matthew Duclos, has founded the website, LensFinder.com, a marketplace for vintage and pre-owned lenses. Many of the offerings there cost more than my last car.

If you’d asked me the very same question only a few years ago, I’d have unhesitatingly recommended getting a speed booster and some APS-C or full frame glass. More recently, and I’d have suggested the fastest native primes you could afford. Now, I believe the Veydra Mini Primes are the best long term investment. Not that micro 4/3 is going anywhere, but the Veydras have economical user switchable mounts (Fuji X, Sony E, u4/3 and C mounts) that can be swapped in minutes.

@Liam I just tested it out on you, it has no effect on your reputation.

That's correct. There's also a 2.7x crop in HD, but supposedly it's not as clean, and I haven't shot in HD with the GH5 yet.
