Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware
jonpais replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
@Andrew Reid Sorry for hijacking this thread, but as you know, I just got the GH5 and only finished setting it up this afternoon... Am I correct in assuming that if you're not shooting fast-moving action, that it's preferable to shoot Long GOP? I'm asking because I intend to shoot some short films, and while I greatly enjoy watching action films, for myself, I prefer long takes where not much is happening. -
i'm still in zoned out from the GH5, so pardon if it sounds like I'm suffering from pre-senile dementia, but iPhonedo just uploaded a video of the Zhiyun Crane V.2, which doesn't appear to be the same gimbal shown above. Incidentally, he's starting to grow on me. Is that a reason for concern? Okay, I see now. There's a Zhiyun Crane V.2 and a Zhiyun Crane 2. Now that's not too confusing, is it?

Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware

Back on topic, who's excited about HLG? Should I start looking for an HDR compliant tv? It just seems like things are changing every few months, so not sure whether to take the plunge. According to a recent Panasonic event, (a new and significant development in HDR technology!) they'll be releasing HDR 10+ or something sets in 2018. Not sure what this all means, the presentation was so godawful boring, I couldn't force myself to watch it all the way through. -

I've got the 2017 5K iMac 27" maxed out, it transcodes to ProRes no problem. Plays back in real time. But I'm getting this weird crop for some reason. Edit: The other biggie once I solve this problem, is that I'll be getting the wider FOV with the GH5. hurray! And while it's completely, entirely unscientific, it appears as though the GH5 has greater dynamic range: if you look at my t-shirt, the highlights look like they'll blow out quicker with the G85. Furthermore, the GH5 seems to lessen the scowl on my face a bit more... -
Panasonic GH5 Review and exclusive first look at Version 2.0 firmware

Somebody here had asked whether there was a difference shooting Cinelike D with the GX85 and the GH5. I just did a completely unscientific test shooting Cinelike with the G85 (4K 23.976) and the GH5 (4K 10 bit, DCI). The light was changing and I manually white balanced, so the two shots aren't identical, but they are close enough. I think the biggest advantage the GH5 has in Cinelike is probably the ability to push the grade farther. Here's with the GH5 And this is with the G85 -
So the max payload has been increased? If so, that's pretty awesome!

I know next to nothing about anamorphic, but am excited to try it. Are we to understand that you are designing a full frame lens that will require two adapters to mount it to the GH5? Also, will we be able to adjust focus with just one ring? -
We may come up with a set of community guidelines, but if we do, it'll probably be with input from Andrew Reid and the entire moderator team. Since you've uploaded your profile picture, now would be as good a time as any to remind everyone to please do the same if you haven't already. ? As far as pseudonyms go, they don't really bother me at all: of course, if you've got a great reputation, it doesn't hurt that contributors like Luke Neumann, Brian Caldwell, John Brawley and fuzzy normal all use their real names. ?

Not sure if this has been posted already, but a fascinating (to me anyhow) discussion of hi-res anamorphic, HDR and YT with Mat and Drew. Drew says the experience of watching HDR is comparable to making the leap from SD content straight to 4K without ever having seen HD. Some nice BTS of their rigged out GH5 beginning at around 16:50. -
I'm in outer space. I just realized I'm responding in the EVA1 thread. Since getting the GH5, my mind is in a daze. Disregard my previous comment.

Sorry jcs, I deleted all my social media accounts, but where can I find one of these bot gear reviews? Could you post a couple genuine ones and a bot one to see whether I can determine which is which?

I think you already know the answer to your HEVC question, Sean Robinson explained to Photo Joseph during a series of lengthy interviews why Panasonic chose not to include H265. This video was posted in a GH5 thread a long while ago. May I ask under what circumstances you'd want to trigger the IS lock during recording? I'm also curious why anyone would shoot video using aperture priority... -
Hi Ethan. How could Panasonic have avoided what you consider to be the 'single biggest drawback'? A full frame sensor GH5? Sorry, just not sure I'm understanding you...
-
Thanks, Nikkor. My bad! ha
-
Hi, Marc, and welcome to the forum. I don't have an answer to your question, but I'm curious - have you ever used tilt-shift lenses?
-
Not sure what the dials do, but $759.00 is pretty steep, considering the gimbal's been available for a couple hundred bucks less as is.

I'm locking this thread as it's got nothing whatever to do with the purpose of the forum, which is to be a knowledge base for filmmakers.
