@BTM_Pix Since you mention JVC, before picking up a GH5 this afternoon, the only other camera that I seriously considered getting was the LS300. It'd be a whole lot less painful coming from micro four thirds. I really like this cross-compatibility thing, as well as manufacturers that treat us to a gazillion free firmware updates, like Fuji and Panasonic. Actually, a number of forum members had been imploring me to pick up the GH5 for months, and Andrew's review is what made me finally cave in. I need another camera about as much as I need a pair of mittens and a scarf. It reminds me a little of when I used to drive to Chevrolet (where I worked as staff photographer) in my Datsun, and my boss was always trying to pressure me into buying American.

I'd been writing about Korean cinema for a website called 'twitch' (now Screen Anarchy) while I was attending university, working toward my master's degree in French; I got insanely deep into Korean history; when I completed my studies, my professor offered me a position at the university teaching a beginner's class. Over the summer, there was a huge strike, enrollment dropped in the French dept. (it'd been dropping for a while, since everyone was more interested in Asian languages anyhow), and my professor suggested I go to Korea and teach English, and when I returned, a couple teachers would have retired by then. But once I set foot in South Korea, I never had any desire to return to the States. That was back in 2007. In 2011, I set off for Vietnam for the first time, and over the course of a year, I must've purchased no fewer than six tickets - any time I could scrape together four or five days of vacation, I booked a flight. In 2012, I decided to move to Vietnam. Now, it's just a matter of convenience - Vietnam finally made one-year visas available to Americans, and at that point, I decided there wasn't any reason to continue teaching here - I only taught in order to remain in the country. So I quit my job last year, and have just been shooting video and traveling ever since. I've been thinking of joining a paramilitary group just for fun, but no one will have me.

@Fritz Pierre I was thinking more along the lines of maybe one G85 in the hands and one rigged out GH5 on sticks. ? -
@Grégory LEROY I'm also a bit confused. I thought you were training men to fight back in the event of a terrorist attack, but then later in the program, you tell the reporter how men need to be men, how men need to fight, that in some way this military training is to compensate for their social immobility in France. It also seems to me that a mere month of Skype interviews or emails is insufficient to weed out individuals who may have less savory motives than defending themselves and their loved ones from extremists. Are you a trained psychologist? Do you even do criminal background checks? Edit: Also, Gregory, I usually don't volunteer to reveal my millionaire status to people unless asked. ?

Lovely colors.

Here's Jason Lanier in a video he just uploaded shooting at an abandoned missile silo, where he really messes up his leg. I'd have rushed to the hospital, but not JL.

One of my two favorite lenses, the Olympus 75mm f/1.8. Music by Eric Matyas www.soundimage.org

It could just be that the color accuracy of the 5K monitor is that much better. Sorry if it doesn't make sense. Anyhow, no question that my 4K clips look ten times better. And I'm guessing there are many more shooters like me, who are capturing in 4K but still viewing on an HD monitor.
-
I can't imagine anything much more harrowing than that.

I've seen your work and it 'resonates' with me; I've never seen the work of 'meanwhile', nor do I have any interest in doing so.

There was something wrong with the OP in the first place.

I'll repeat what I said just a couple of posts earlier, and that is, unless you're viewing your clips on a 4K or 5K monitor, even if you're shooting 1080p, it's virtually impossible to come to any decisive conclusions regarding color and resolution. I just had a look at some of my lens comparisons between the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 and the Leica 12mm f/1.4 shot and delivered in 4K and realized just how incredibly detailed the Olympus is on my 5K iMac, though I much prefer the cooler rendition of the Leica. Viewing the same images on my 2013 iMac was like looking at the images through Saran Wrap. The same goes for my most recent video shot in 1080p using the BMD Video Assist. The same applies to evaluating images on a 15" laptop cf. to a 27" monitor - it's no contest really - a 27" 5K monitor just kills a 15" laptop, in spite of the fact that they both have comparable dots per inch.

Matthew Scott prefers the BMPCC and BMMCC to the Red Scarlet. See blog post There are also downloadable files for comparison.

By stopping down to 'f/8 or more', he's actually destroying resolution as a result of diffraction. There's also no need to shoot with the lens stopped down that far, as that gives you everything from one foot to ∞ in focus, a bit overkill. Anyhow, congrats on your purchase.

You've got a great eye, Charlie. Don't undersell yourself. I just had a peek at some of your work, it's definitely worth 500-800 euros a day. Whatever you do, I wouldn't charge a mere 100 euros a day. I've got 1/50th of your talent and I could probably command several times that for a day's work if I wanted, though I don't shoot commercially and don't even have a proper portfolio. If you do accept it for less, please, please, don't tell me about it... Your work's absolutely worth more than 25 pints of beer at a pub.

Thanks, PannySVHS! Kinda boring stuff without dazzling wipe transitions, slo-mo, thrilling speed ramps, stunning aerial shots and Raging Bull-worthy sound effects, but whatever. I should have the miniature marvel in my grubby little hands in a week and-a-half: I'll probably shoot mostly with the Zhiyun Crane, since this tiny instrument seems designed expressly for gimbals or drones, though my gimbal work leaves a lot to be desired. This may also be the very first time I shoot with a lens with 'character' - monstrous vignetting and obscene flaring - should be interesting for those wanting to see me fall flat on my face.

Maybe @Fritz Pierre can chime in. He's just got himself one.

@gethin The Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is super light and (relatively) inexpensive.
-
Although he posted a disclaimer saying he used to be a spokesperson for Sachtler, a recent review by Nino of one of their tripods sounded so much like a paid endorsement that I lost all interest in the site after that.

more footage shot with the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 There has already been ample documentation that this tiny lens is no mere toy. Commenter yatbond, who can be none other than Robin Wong, writes over at 43rumors that he spoke personally with Ming Thein, who told him the lens is indeed sharp, and he's already picked one up himself. He does add however that purchasers must be wary of lens variance, an issue that unfortunately does not apply only to these third party manufacturers.
