  1. Yeah Phil, we're requiring approval now.
  2. Why are you preaching the benefits of h265 to me? Tell it to Sony or whoever - I'm already pretty familiar with h265. And why don't you stop twisting my words around Mark? You are pretty slippery, with each new post you say you didn't mean what you said in the previous post. You did say, and I don't need to quote you again, that it was a case of corporate greed. Nothing at all to do with me, whether I want h265 or not. Nothing to do with whether h265 is better or not. You made an unsupported allegation against Panasonic, and I showed you were wrong, and now another barrage of your fantasy world. This may shock you, so please sit down first, but you don't speak for all filmmakers. You may want h265, but don't presume everyone does, not right at the moment anyway. Same as USB-C and Apple, whom you also seem to hold a grudge against. Why don't you just watch and listen to the interview with Sean Robinson and take it up with Pansonic? It's obvious you are targeting Panasonic, you let Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax and Fuji off the hook. How do you know none of them are prepared to implement h265? Are you an engineer for Sony? Anyhow, done talking with you.

    Oops! Guess you're right! ?
  4. I never said I was against choice. Where did you read that? I would be more than happy to be able to choose between h264 and h265. What I object to is baseless accusations, name-calling that has no basis in fact. You say your point is not to hypothesize on the reason, but you already have by calling Panasonic greedy. I've already given my reasons why it can't be greed: first, because Panasonic has equipped the GH5 with more features than any of the competition, which is the quite the opposite of greedy behavior; secondly, because it appears Panasonic has already paid the licensing fees for h265. Why anybody would be looking for an answer to your question on this website is beyond me: If you bothered to watch the video interview with Sean Robinson, he explains at length why Panasonic hasn't implemented h265 for video. And while I would like the option of having h265, I don't think you can speak for everyone when you say, 'we as shooters want it', anymore than I can say, 'we as shooters want 8K'. You want it, I can go on shooting without it. Incidentally, I use a Mac for editing, and h265 would be very inconvenient for me. Are you going to tell me to purchase another computer? Edit: Mark, what's your beef against Panasonic, anyway? Why do you keep harping on Panasonic, when you should be asking why none of the major players is offering h265 (Sony, Canon, Fuji, Olympus...)

Nobody replied, so I've already mashed the two together. If it turns out to look like hell, I'll do individual videos. Almost 2 hours of footage I've got to trim down to around 2-1/2 minutes, probably gonna take a few days. Believe it or not, it was this video that convinced me I had to own the Leica. I've been trying to find suitable fast primes to replace my two Panasonic Vario zooms, the 12-35mm f/2.8 and 35-100mm f/2.8. This should just about round out the set: 12mm f/1.4 Leica, 25mm f/1.2 Oly, 30mm f/1.4 Sigma, 42.5mm 1.2 Leica, and 75mm 1.8 Oly. Your shots with the 15mm look phenomenal, BTW.
  6. I'm not trying to put you on the spot here Mark, but do you even know how much camera manufacturers must pay in royalties for h.265? Because if the cost of entry is small, call it what you will, but it can't be greed; if the fees are astronomical, it's not greed but prudence: especially as having h.265 on a phone requires no effort on the consumer's part, whereas editing h.265 can be a hassle for those who don't have the latest and greatest computers. In any case, since Panasonic is already implementing h.265 for 6K Photo, I'm guessing that it's the latter.

Ordered the Panasonic Leica 12mm f/1.4, should arrive sometime next week. Hopefully posting a quick and dirty video by next Friday.
  8. First, sorry, I didn't get the Yogi Berra reference, thought you were making fun of me. Guess I have to Google that. You already said this would be a less-than-candid manufacturer's excuse, but just to show I'm not making anything up, here's the video with Sean Robinson where he explains why they don't use the h265 codec for all video modes. And glad you enjoy my videos!
  9. Thanks so much for sharing this video, Charles. Also, you just might have sold me on the Leica 12mm f/1.4.
  10. My problem is that the poster is accusing Panasonic of swindling the public, which is unverifiable. Same goes for those accusing Panasonic of withholding h265 out of pure greed. All these accusations are completely without any foundation. If anything, I think you should be pointing the finger at other manufacturers, not Panasonic, for not offering features like anamorphic, swiveling 1620k dot LCD, 3680k dot EVF with 0.76x magnification, wave form monitors, vector scopes, dual card slots, USB-C, Bluetooth, high bit rates, 4K 60p, etc in their consumer cameras...
  11. I'm merely repeating the reason given by a Panasonic representative during an interview dude. Let Panasonic off the hook? Why don't you take on the entire camera industry?
  12. Why is the word scams in CAPS? Are you saying Panasonic is scamming someone? How are we being scammed by Panasonic? What does the GH5 not do that Panasonic claims it will do? What is real is real no matter what people say or claim? What does the last sentence mean? Are you a grade-schooler?

i'm pretty much finished testing the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 and the Fuji 90mm f/2, both excellent lenses. I was toying with the idea of posting footage from both cameras together, since I like the idea of showing both normal and tele perspectives of some of the same subjects, but I'm afraid I might not be able to match the footage from both cameras. Also, attention may be focused on the cameras themselves rather than the lenses. Would you prefer to see two separate field tests, or one mixed?
  14. Have you mixed X-T2 and GX85 footage together? I just finished testing out the Olympus 25mm f/1.2 and Fuji 90mm f/2 and was considering posting the results together in a sort of double field test, but was afraid I could never get the two to match. I shot a lot of the same subjects with both cameras and liked the idea of showing off two great lenses as well as seeing the subjects through a tele and a 'normal' lens, but was about to drop the whole thing. What do you think?
  15. yeah, I think I recall a Panasonic representative saying it might be incorporated, but can't really be sure, since I don't shoot anamorphic and wasn't paying close attention.
  16. Okay, so in fact, zebras do not disappear when adjusting shutter speed and aperture in manual mode, only when using the EV button in automatic. That's probably why I've never noticed it, since I don't shoot in auto. Good to know though. I'm considering making a pinned topic where everyone can list all the features that should have been included in the GH5 but weren't.
  17. What mode are we talking about here? movie mode? auto Exposure? which settings should I be using and which dials should I be turning?
  18. Hi Ken, I've got the G85 right here in my hands as I type (well, almost), and as I point the camera at my desktop, and adjust either aperture or shutter speed, the zebras remain live the entire time, diminishing as I reduce exposure, increasing as I increase exposure.
  19. 10 bit looks completely unusable! ? ?
  20. I wish I could like that post a few more times. Panasonic crams this device with more features than ever thought possible, thousands asking for even more. Sat through an hour and-a-half long video with one of Panasonic's representatives, super patient and good-humored, just fielding questions about why Panasonic doesn't do this, why don't they do that. Said it before, I'll say it again, Panasonic has given this community more than it probably deserves. And since Davey brings up skateboard gimbal videos, one newbie, who happens to only shoot BMX in extremely poor lighting conditions and is all worked up on saving for the GH5, I say he'd be better off buying a Sony a6XXX and he blows me off like I have no idea what I'm talking about.
  21. Why don't Sony, Olympus, and Panasonic release h.265? Because it's not widely adopted yet, and they'll be inundated with calls to their help center.
  22. You may be right, but Max has worked with a number of Panasonics, he still uses them from time to time to shoot his vlogs; he also uses Sony a6XXX cameras; in addition, he's tested far more cameras than I've ever laid hands on: so when he says, as he does in the video, that he's experienced problems with AF-C with all of his Panasonics, I have no reason to doubt him. So, he's not generalizing from just one test: he's basing his findings on tests as well as real world use. On top of which, I myself have owned four or five Panasonics, and my experience has been the same. So whether the G85 performs a little better, a little worse or just the same at +2, his initial findings that AF-C on the G85 is unreliable holds true for me.

A motion picture camera is just a dumb box, digital is a boring format, how Red and the digital era saw Cooke's customer base explode, how digital has breathed new life into anamorphic, putting a gouge into the front element of a Cooke to make a point, it's impossible to hold focus on a living breathing thing at T1.4, and other tidbits from Cooke chairman Les Zellan.
