I would feel the same way. I would not expect a camera to actually break or develop a crack after such a small drop when inside a camera bag. You have already got me thinking of buying a serious camera case,

I'm not a computer expert, but I don't think CPUs today are the bottleneck in editing. It's more prudent to invest in extra RAM and storage. With the proper drive connected to the thunderbolt 1 port, you can get read and write speeds of over 800MB/s. The iMac monitor is beautiful. And the iMac is incidentally a work of art in itself. It is regrettable that Apple is bent on preventing user upgrades, but adding RAM to the current 27" takes just seconds, no tools required.

Anthony Teror's Dark Church is really a wonder: in fact, all of his videos are worth watching. Not that I'll ever be able to shoot like him, but I have definitely got to get off my butt and buy some fast glass. I'm also inclined to believe he's shooting 4K using fast glass stopped down, in a very dimly lit church. It looks like he was or still is a Canon user, so isn't it likely he's using Canon glass? Although the video looks awesome, it's impossible for me to judge the noise on Vimeo, since I'm seeing all kinds of swimming dots in the shadows, not that it's distracting or anything. The original clip must be pristine. Also, judging by the number of videos he has uploaded, he's probably too busy shooting to spend time fielding comments on Vimeo. Edit: since reading jcs's post above, now I'm not so sure about anything! But why on earth would anyone shoot 1080p rather than 4K for that shoot? It does appear that quite a bit of sharpening was added in post. Again, I can't agree though that uploading to Vimeo hides noise - on the contrary, I find my videos look noisier when uploaded.

@Stephenk Thanks for the link. A very interesting read.

@Germy1979 I hadn't heard of those reports before. After purchasing the camera however, I did see a comparison between an Olympus, and the Panasonic looked horrid in the stills, especially at higher ISOs, but even at ISO 200 it wasn't any great shakes. Guess I'll have to live with it.

I would get the 27" if you get an iMac at all. It only takes seconds to upgrade the RAM on the 27" iMac. There is a little door near the power outlet. I don't think the 21" is upgradeable, though I could be wrong. So, are you planning to spend this money out of pocket, or is the school pitching in? [edit] I'm a teacher myself, and working with crap equipment, such as when I want to show a video in class using the school's garbage projector, it's a nightmare. Half the time the equipment doesn't work at all. I'm not so sure, in fact, I am sure, I'd never spend that kind of money for my students, as much as I love them. Maybe you should consider something else after all.

at the risk of starting a war, I'll be the first to say that Macs are worth the $2k. I still wonder at filmmakers who are wiling to spend thousands on gear, but when it comes to desktop computers and storage, they don't want to spend a penny. What's the point of owning a great camera if editing is a chore, and you're watching your videos on a sub-par screen? Sorry, I know that doesn't answer your question...

I believe it is the 1080p 200 Mb/s setting that is the most demanding. I've been using a SanDisk Extreme Class 10 45 MB/s card in C4K mode for the past 2 weeks with no problem.

my very favorite!

I'm a little surprised nobody else has responded to this topic. Here's a test clip I made with basically identical settings to Timo's. I did very little correction in post. NR in camera was set to 0, factory setting, yet large amounts of noise are plainly visible in the background, especially in the dark trees behind the subjects. When re-examining my clips from the GH3 shot at ISO 200, the grain is much finer and less noticeable. http://jonpais.wordpress.com/2014/07/20/lumix-gh4-test-faces-ii/

Panasonic rates the battery life in video at an overly optimistic 40 minutes. In fact, it is at most probably around 25-30 minutes. You'll definitely need several spares if you're planning on shooting all day long.

GH3 won't write HD video to Sandisk 32MB 45MB/s card
jonpais replied to beemerbiker's topic in Cameras
Not sure why it's not working properly. Not only does the SanDisk Extreme Class 10 45MB/s card work in my GH3, it also reads and writes 4K in my GH4. -
So probably basically the same settings I'm using. Neutral, with most of the settings set from -2 to -4. I'm sure your camera isn't defective. On the other hand, what's with the noise we're experiencing? Do you own a GH3? I found the noise levels much lower, but the colors of the GH4 sensor are much improved. I find the noise especially surprising, since I kind of expected downscaling from 4K to reduce stuff like noise and digital artifacting. On the plus side, virtually no aliasing or moire, at least nowhere near as bad as the GH3.
-
@Timo I don't think your sensor is faulty. I'm also seeing way more noise with the GH4, even with NR set at 0, than with NR on my GH3 set at -5, and I always shoot at ISO 200. I'm not sure why that is. Of course, when my videos are uploaded to YouTube, the noise problem looks much worse than it actually is. I do think the factory settings in the picture profile of the GH3 are more aggressive than the GH4 - for example, even with in-camera sharpening at minimum on the GH3, I don't need to add any sharpening in post, whereas with the GH4, it needs a little bit. Since you mentioned the problem, I went ahead and looked at my most recent video and decided next time, I'll try shooting with NR set a little higher than the factory setting and see if that helps any. Could you share your settings with us? Was NR set at 0? Which picture profile are you using? etc.

Panasonic GH4 user films, tests, reviews and opinions
jonpais replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Here is my first test of the GH4, shots of street life in Saigon, taken for the most part during breakfast and lunch time at a cafe near my house. http://jonpais.wordpress.com/2014/07/20/lumix-gh4-test-faces-ii/ -
I own the GH4 with Panny 12-35 and 35-100 and they attach firmly and smoothly. There shouldn't be any grinding. If bought locally, I'd go to the shop straight away.

@pablogrollan up until around the 2-1/2 minute mark, the skin tones look too magenta for my taste, and the highlights in the model's face look a touch bright as well. Also, I much prefer the bokeh in the full-frame mode, but it still looks very 'busy' and distracting to me. Still, thank you for sharing. @jcs I didn't have a problem with the skin tones in the fashion show, I realize lighting conditions in those situations are very difficult, and you got some very nice shots as well. I wouldn't mind however, seeing another edit correcting for the yellow-green tint.

Welcome to the forums Nicos! Watching your intercut footage, which is beautiful btw, it looks like the Panasonic can hold it's own compared to a camera costing some $12,000. I'm currently in the middle of shooting and getting ready to post my own results soon, but unfortunately, nobody is sending me to Georgia! :( I did find the highlights in both of your clips to be a bit on the bright side, but that's just a matter of taste - I prefer low key shots. -
