I'm not really interested at all in the LG vs Red comparison, as I have no immediate plans to shoot a film with either. This topic was started to allow readers to post comparisons between different mirrorless cameras.
-
I chose this clip at random. Cellphone probably not the best idea for the reasons you cited. But it's good you pointed it out, since it would be preferable for posters to be able to ascertain the frame rate and shutter angle. I'm hoping to see comparisons with the mirrorless cameras that so many here claim have atrocious, deal-breaking motion cadence.
-
That's what I'd call a dramatic difference. You don't seem to have especially shaky hands to me. Cute kids!
-
@markr041 If in fact the shutter speed was 1/800th sec on the cellphone, great! Then we should see an enormous difference in motion cadence, but I don't. Preferably, the clips members post will be at 24p with shutter angle at 180 degrees.

Being able to capture shots like these without a gimbal is awesome.

We've heard a lot from forum members claiming to see stark differences between cameras in the way they render motion, so this thread is for all those who wish to post comparisons. I'll start things off with a comparison between an $800 smartphone and a $50,000 cinema camera. I believe the two cameras were both set at 4K UHD 24p. It would of course be best if the posted videos were all shot at 24p. Edit: Side-by-side tests only please!

Just the same, there are dozens of significant differences between the two cameras: not just the battery; not only 4K 60p; and and not solely an articulating screen. I would recommend checking out some reviews of the BMPC if you haven't already. Properly kitted out, it will set you back much more than a GH5. If you think saying the BMPC won't work with a $25 Cowboy plastic shoulder rig is hostility and not simply a statement of fact, sorry for that.
-
but they are not more or less the same size. have you ever seen one first hand?
-
sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
-
Will the 65mm see twice as much horizontally as a spherical lens?
-
wow as in I can’t recall seeing such shaky footage with IBIS before.
-
wow

I don’t think you’d want to be mounting the BMPC on that rig. Not sure a monopod’s a solution either. It’s not a run ‘n gun camera.

I’ve written pretty extensively about the Shogun Inferno over at my blog. I bought it mostly for 4K 60p and for use as an HDR grading monitor. As far as using it with a mirrorless camera, you can just about forget going handheld unless you’re a bodybuilder. Trying to adjust any of the onscreen controls while holding the camera with one hand is pretty ridiculous. Five inches is ideal for handheld work.

We need more information.

Not a single review of the thousands I’ve read or watched ever mentioned motion cadence - only in these pages, where people claim to see uneven movement everywhere. I’ve never heard an experienced filmmaker mention it either. Nor have I ever seen marketing boasting of superior motion cadence. There must be a half dozen reasons why footage doesn’t look right - many having nothing at all to do with the camera. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, just that I’ve never seen an instance of it. In the past, I’ve even uploaded videos in the wrong frame rate and nobody even blinked. I could have inserted a frame of squirrels munching on acorns every twenty-four frames and I doubt anyone would notice. ? Two common reasons for jerky motion are judder when panning, which can happen with the best of cameras; and breaking the 180 degree rule. I’ve also noticed it when using pan mode on my gimbal. And afaik, it can also be due to the monitor. And various other causes unrelated to the camera itself. I would however be very interested in seeing a side-by-side test of two cameras recording the same scene, one with poor motion cadence, the other with good motion cadence, to see whether I can notice any difference, because up till now, we just have anecdotal evidence. No need to create a new video - thousands of side-by-side comparisons already exist on YT - maybe someone can find one where they can see a difference in motion cadence.

Sorry, I must have missed the point of the test. I’m going back to bed now.
-
But I was unmistakably referring to the video, not to the preceeding comments. We were talking about bit depth, not bit rate...
-
Which other side is there? ?
-
As you raise the ISO, dynamic range is significantly decreased, whereas the aperture setting has no influence on DR.
-
Am I just tired, or is there a serious flaw with this test? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think he should be raising the ISO, he should be opening up the iris. Very strange test.
-
Apparently, dynamic range is directly related to bit depth.
-
@Rinad Amir Could be, or maybe just the lighting.

In fact, industrial designers spend years at university studying subjects like ergonomics for a reason. For example, placing the shutter button on the bottom of the camera would be poor design. So ergonomics is not entirely subjective and arbitrary.Design that allows photographers to use a camera with the least amount of fuss and make changes to shutter speed and aperture and scroll through the menus with as little effort as possible are all part of handling, which is one of the very first topics most good reviewers discuss when evaluating any camera. To dismiss ergonomics as nothing more than subjectivity is silly. It's little different from saying, 'none of this really matters'. Because it does matter. Pointing out missed opportunities is also not hate speech. But @Emanuel , not sure why you're bringing up that bs again. Maybe gloating over your own superior judgement? Have you even bought the camera yet? Did you ever even own the X-T2?
