  1. If LUT monitoring was not turned on, there would be no mistaking it, as VlogL on GH cameras is very flat...it's curious that even with a custom LUT you're getting the same result...otherwise you could simply create an overly vibrant image to use just as an exposure tool...but as Frederick is also reporting this, it maybe lies in their FW implementation as the screen is certainly capable of displaying an accurate image
  2. I would expect everyone to know those basics from the article, the question is: how much more data rate will you need in All-I to match the quality of Long GOP? If it's 3 times, you already lose quality with the 400 Mbps codec. @Fritz Pierre is of course right about the "in the right hands" comment, but those also do magic with 8bit 4:2:0 material in 100 Mbps. I've seen a table with comparison of the different compression levels but I can't recall where, I'll edit it in when/if I find it. If you don't mind wading through a lot of pages on DVXUser, there is a detailed explanation in the GH5 is coming thread on this very subject....and of course storage media is going to be the bottleneck in this new FW update and codec...that's why I like Prores...I already have the large fast SSD's and my slower Sandisks in SD seems to work seemlessly in the current 150Mbps acquisition
  3. Great article...it also serves to boggle the mind at the complexity of what happens in a digital camera at such speed, to produce the image, as opposing to a lens allowing an exposure via, in the case of motion, a 180 degree mechanical shutter onto a light sensitive film frame...technology is truly amazing in some areas!!
  4. Agreed on the preorder thing....unfortunately in the US they don't offer the GH 12-60 Panny/Leica lens that I wanted...so $1000 later!...I never used the 200 Mbps Intra on the GH4 as it did not produce the best image quality...I have read that under extremely difficult motion conditions the Intra can perform better...so I could see a need for using the 400 Intra upgrade where movement is more important than image...I record almost exclusively at 800 Mbps in prores on an external recorder....best image and best editing results on my Mac...however the current 150Mbps in the GH5 in the right hands (always the case with any camera regardless what some on the forum may say) produces beautiful results...still won't have mine for a month, so you may beat me to shooting with it...envy you for being able to save real $'s on these kits though....their glass is getting pricey, but it's also getting really good!
  5. The color is similar to the GX85 and G85, but with Cine D and V-log it's better I think. I need to shoot more but for now I'm very pleased with the results I've been getting with 10-bit 25p v-log. In post I use the Leeming lut as base and grade from there. Grading from scratch is doable and a nice way to get better at grading. Yes...I use the Leeming LUT exactly like you do...the only thing I "disagree" with him a little on is in the exposure....he provides a bit of a manual for use with his LUTs (which as far as I know no one else does...though in fairness I've not used Andrews procolor or Luke's LUTS and they may do also)....anyway in terms of exposure he suggests ETTR which in most cases work, but under trying circumstances nothing beats a good spot/incident lightmeter. But it's really only a problem when you have an extremely bright source in the shot....relative to the rest. Anyway, once I started using his LUT in the GH4 the camera became a different beast! In the US they are flying off the shelf....B&H already sold out of 2 shipments and the next stock is expected May 4th...mine should ship from Hot Rod Camera sometime today or tomorrow!
  6. Have to say this camera is pretty tempting at that price....high hours but as they are workhorses, very tempting....anyway thanks for clarifying....I have to be less cynical ??... I remember years ago selling an HVX 200 on Craigslist and all the scams coming in at that time was from someone in the "US Military"...who had a daughter in London or Paris going to Art School??
  7. I can understand shipping a high priced item like this for 150 or 250 ...it would of course have to be completely insured but the listing that PannySVHS posted a link to, listed the shipping costs at $850 in eBay....did not specify to where....just 850....smelled fishy to me...my sister-in-law who's a painter got caught up in a gigh shipping cost scam when somebody bought some paintings from her...maybe I'm wrong of course!
  8. This is a fairly small light box...not the kind of Arri brutal manufacture where you use the matte box for a handle for your rig, but infinitely adjustable....especially for DSLR rigs which can vary considerably in height...the bellows on the front also accommodate compression, so if you're say working on a lens that zooms, it can accommodate some of that movement....I standardized my lenses with flared metal lens hoods that mate well to the bellows on the box....I think they may even offer larger bellows as an option to mate with large PL mount lens fronts on Cine lenses...at 200 something sales price a bargain!
  9. Shoot 35 on sale now for a ridiculously low price. https://www.shoot35.com/cinebox-4x4-Matte-Box-p/shoot-cinebox-flags.htm
  10. Yes...but the shipping cost for the one Pannyhvs posted was $850!! ...that seems to be getting on the extreme side of shipping costs!...and that price seems too good to be true also!!!...as it has the high speed license and everything!
  11. Exactly!...this is a huge factor in this gimbal...may require a longer than standard QR plate, but providing you're within the weight limit you could now get more lens on there and of course anamorphic would be the holy grail...
  12. I doubt that it makes any difference as the center of gravity is still directly over the handle...from a physics standpoint the 45 degree or whatever the angle is that the mount migrates out, is cancelled out by the same angle and height of the return...the gimbal should notice no difference....in fact balancing should be easier as there's nothing behind the camera to prevent you from moving it backwards or forward to compensate for larger lenses...
  13. Great price!....but hello!...look at the shipping costs!...there is a scheme afoot where one pays the shipping (usually very high) separately on an item with too good a price to be true...you pay everything....the camera never shows up, and you are refunded by PayPal...but the cost of shipping is gone?...of course 5000+ hours on this one rather than the 1060 on the one I posted above....who knows??
  14. Thanks so much for the great test Aaron!
  15. Understood...and of course the flare on the anamorphic helped by spreading the light horizontally making the craft appear larger
  16. You're right...just saw this listing....seems like an amazing price and very complete package...can't believe how far they are coming down in price! http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?350342-ARRI-ALEXA-Classic-968-hours-Highspeed-Licence-(120fps)-PRICE-TO-SALE-EU
  17. Hi Luke....just looks fantastic!!...a question....how did you attach the Lume Cube to the Inspire, and how was flying it with the extra weight added to the front of the aircraft?
  18. Wow...I've been watching one from Israel for +- $23000...but that was minus viewfinder, batteries viewfinder media etc....I was looking at them relative to SonyF35's but never saw them at that low a price...that was months ago though...with a high speed license, media & viewfinder that is an amazing price for the Alexa Classic!
  19. I'm not sure...even on the GH4 I had little problem and the GH 2 which I still own, has an Image I love...but as you know, taste is subjective...I love the image from BM but their earlier 2 cameras were ergonomically impractical IMO...stunning image though....Panasonic color I will take over Canon or Sony any day (except for the Sony F35...which I think has the best digital image of any camera today, including the Alexa)...my only interest is in narrative...I need certain reliability factors satisfied and in my work It's my taste and look that counts...that's what allows me to tell a story...be it 30 seconds or 1 hour....but that's the beauty of today....so many choices...one really can't blame the cameras any more....when I started working in the industry you shoton an Arriflex S35 film camera or for handheld on the shoulder an Aaron S16 film camera...those were the choices and the process was horrendously expensive and really only for the select few...and what you say about the GH cameras is true, but for me (only my opinion) it holds true for all cameras today...far more crap shot on all of them...yet put any of these cameras in the hands of a crew 2 to 3 to operate the GH x or A6500 and lighting and production value and I can guarantee you, you would not know what camera you were looking at...so personally I try to look between the lines when choosing my cameras...but finally...nobody's right or wrong...just different taste and abilities....
  20. How did you get your hands on an early release of the mystery camera?...that looks just like what's under the veil!!
  21. +1 if you can't make the GH5 or the A6500 or practically anything going back a couple of years work and produce something beautiful, learning something about cameras and how to use them would be probably the next order of business...getting the camera is of course the first step and writing nonsense on a forum has never landed a minute of footage on either the big or small screen...just because one reads a term on the internet (say cinematic...yawn) it does not mean you know what that is....getting out there and working with a camera and creating projects can only improve things...or of course one can simply land up with some or more of the same crap everyone sees on YouTube....hey...if it was easy, everyone would be doing it so don't feel bad??
  22. So I take it you don't feel this piece shot on the GH5 has the "mojo" you need in a camera?...perhaps you can tell us what camera you shoot on that works for you?
  23. Wow!!!!....look at that banding!!! hope that was'nt shot internally on Vlog on the GH5??????
  24. Agree with Jimmy and I think there's another almost subliminal aspect to the EOSHD forum name...it's in the impartiality of the site, as you certainly critisize Canon in spite of the amount of their cameras you've owned/own and the forum name...there is a neutrality that's used in looking at various cameras lenses etc. Members are still fanboys of various cameras, but the EOSHD site treats all cameras based on the performance they produce and commentary they merit, rather than their brand...(there's a certain attractive defiance in that, in terms of marketing/branding)...something especially of great value for someone newly coming into the field with enquiries re that first camera, lenses etc.
  25. +100!!! in camera LED screen or EVF desqueeze would just be one of those out of the ballpark features!!!
