I agree, although I do own a full set of SLR Magic lenses...if you look at the trailer for Musgo, it was shot mostly with the Tokina 11-16 on a GH2...the lens produces a lovely image, as does the GH2...https://vimeo.com/33025136 I presume you went for the Nikon mount?...I own both the Tokina and the Sigma, which will cut together, giving you a full set...plus there's some amazing Nikon AFS f2.8 glass that Andy discusses in the lenses thread, so going this route will leave you with no shortage of glass to buy for the future:)
-
Depends on what you want to use it for....Fincher's most used lenses on S35 are 24 & 28mm...if 12 mm does not get you there on the GH4, go to the Tokina 11-16... f.2.8 and with the XL Speedbooster you'll be as wide as you ever need to be, or spend $900 plus on the SLR Magic 10mm...you already have the speedbooster so the Tokina at I believe $477 is a good price and then you're not stuck with a one trick pony camera:)

Andy gave me advice on an interesting option to go wide...a Schneider Century Wide Angle Converter...the widest you can go is x7 and remain optically neutral...I bought 2 and some 77 mm Chinese sky filters...the optic makes the field of view on any lens wider by 30%...I converted one and use it with my Nikons, tne Sigma 18-35 and although I don't have the XL Speedbooster yet, it solves going wide on my Canon FD 20mm and of course on the bigger Zooms where everything thing is 77mm...I was going to use both, but I'm moving to Ecuador and will only keep the one I converted...I live in the USA so no idea about shipping but the optic was only $110 plus 16 for the 77 mm sky filters I...I really like this solution as I can also change the field of view by 30 % on any of my Primes...if interested I could ship my spare to you...otherwise the SLR Magic 10 or your 11-16 Tokina would be your best bet....Cheers, Fritz

I use the f4.0...(1st Generation 14-140) whenever I need to zoom without a tripod on both my hacked GH2 indoors and my GH4 outdoors...steady with no micro jitters even at the 140 end of the zoom...read about jitters on the f3.5 version but also in the thread I read that it was solved with a FW update...you can pick up the early version for between $350 -400 and it's not too heavy as a walk around lens. Just bought a new NTSC GH4 body from Canada for $1299...

I agree...and actually in the profile and settings you use the image is already somewhat desaturated without feeling "thin"...And that's not even graded!...I feel a bit less anxious about log as I really like the skin tones...tried the Supersettings Portrait also and liked it but this is closer to that perfect middle point...lots of latitude and beautiful just as it comes out of the camera...Thanks for the info the clips are great!
-
I Have neither the 10 or the 50 but everything in between...these lenses render beautifully and again I really like the Natural profile on the GH4 though I've never used it...it really suits this camera!..very energetic subject!!
-
Thanks much...I really like the profile more than either of the Cine modes...the Anamorphic looks great, though I have to say what you shot with the 2x Anamorphot looked good also....same profile and settings?
-
Hi Zak...footage looks great!!...can you share your picture profile and settings? Also how heavy is the unit...the build quality appears to be outstanding!! Thanks much,Fritz
-
Jordan....thanks for the footage and input...it looks amazing, especially considering you just applied an Alexa Rec 709 Lut instead of a full grade...clearly the log profile offers the posibility of many variations of the clips!...did you shoot with all picture settings at 0 or did you adjust them and if so, to what?...Again, thanks much for sharing!!

New Metabones Speedbooster for the GH4 - S35 crop size!
Fritz Pierre replied to nahua's topic in Cameras
to Ebrahim...read your excellent article on the very overused "filmic, cinematic" term. The irony is that the quality of footage coming out of sub $1000 cameras today is astonishing and if we fetishize them less and use them more, the low budget film maker is now in a place unimaginable 10 years ago...a beautifully written and thoughtful essay....Thank you! -
New Metabones Speedbooster for the GH4 - S35 crop size!

Agreed....the S35 in 4K mode is spot on!...This is going to look amazing with my Nikons...now on to Vlog...be interesting what Panasonic decides after the release of the Sony A7RII which still looks like an ergonomic mess!... -
Hi Andy Wanted to mention that the two Bourne Nikons impressed me so much that I actually went and bought the 17-35mm also...the same amazing image as it's bigger syblings Curiously the only one of the 3 Nikon still makes today Cheers Fritz

New Metabones Speedbooster for the GH4 - S35 crop size!

To j.f.r..... The most important thing I consider in an image is dynamic range and colors, resolution not so much as long as it's 720p. Blackmagic Ursa Mini will be my next personal camera, I really don't see myself buying any new non 4k camera, 4K camera simply gives you a greta advantage when downscaling to 1080p which is something I wouldn't want to lose. Not sure where your hatred of the GH4 comes from...maybe reread your contradiction above carefully...do you or have you ever shot with a GH4 and can you possibly post some of your "cinematic" footage that you talk so much about so we can see what we ought to aspire to! -
Panasonic GH4 user films, tests, reviews and opinions
Fritz Pierre replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Found these settings on DVX user...amazing skin tones and retained detail in shadows...http://www.supertone.dk/#!GH4-Optimal-Film-Setting-works-in-stills-too/c24o4/8E18836A-F271-4A14-AF0D-C575B9D5F4B6 -
Hi Andy....just another thanks for your excellent advice...The AF-S 28-70 Nikon Bourne lens and the AF-S 80-200 lenses are incredible...I also bought the Schneider x.7 adapter...again outstanding optics and bought a 2nd one which I'm using with my FD lens set...works with my FD 20mm 2.8and turns it into a 14mm lens with no vignetting...at 2.8 and that's not even calculating for the speed booster....for a cost of $70!!...Thank you...beyond satisfied with the Nikons and the 28-70 Tokina 2.6 Cheers, Fritz Pierre
-
Hi Andy Just a brief note...won the 28-70 AF-S, and though it came at a high price ($960), it was described as virtually unused and in "new" condition...like you I am a big fan of shooting long....an intimacy level with the actors can be achieved that is rarely there when you're right in front of them...Thank you so much for your guidance with this...I've seen stills these lenses produce and of course the Bourne and Bond films...can't wait for this glass!!!....all the best!! Fritz

Should the 3 UV filters be 77 or 72mm...I was under the impression that the rear dimension of the century optic was 72 mm? I suppose it will be more obvious to me when I have the adapter in hand!
-
PS...this adapter is also going to save me a lot of money on my set of FD lenses as my widest is 24mm and this will get me down to 17 mm with a much faster f stop and without the $450 price tag that seems to come with the wider FD's!!
-
Hi Andy...I won the x0.7 adapter you pointed me to...can you please elaborate the process of adding the rings...do yo add more than one?...I also presume it has to be a 77mm male to 72mm female step down ring and lastly is there a crucial distance to achieve between the front lens element and the wide by adapter All the best Cheers Fritz
-
Looks amazing...just bought a pristine AF-S 80-200 for $780 US ....can't wait to start playing with this long brute...good thing I have a lens support on my rig!!:)
-
I'll stay away from the 70-200 and hunt for the AFS version of the 80-200 ...I believe Lanparte even makes a reverse follow focus gear to use with Nikons so that you're always pulling focus in the same direction...I also assume that the AF version of the 80-200 is not the same quality optics as the AFS version Very excited about these lenses!!
-
Hi Andy Is you 80 -200 Nikon also an AFS series and is there a reason you did not opt for the 70-200 AFS instead. or do you not consider these on par Cheers Fritz
-
Thanks much Andy...found a pristine copy of the 28-70 nikon...FYI...the image on the Tokina 28-70 is stunning....my favorite lens now Cheers Fritz
-
...Hi Andy Found a century .7 x with a front diameter of 105mm and a rear of 72...for a Sony HDV....it also says "for ZU1 only " on the optic...could that work on the 28-70 in your opinion, Thanks much Fritz
