For video? Doesn't it lack IBIS, limited 4K to cropped UHD at 30 fps? No flippy screen either. About same resolution as a G9/GH5 and the even the GH5 is a couple of hundred bucks cheaper. (Not to mention the vast array of other Video related features you get with a GH5)

..and Sony! That goes for Sony too. Not much progress on APS-C cameras lately. All the manufacturers except Panasonic/Olympus (m43, not aps-c of course) - seem to favor giving decent functionality and upgrades only in FF. (Panasonic/Olympus might not do much better either IF they currently had FF - yeah I know Panasonic is working on it, but not out yet!)

Agreed, but they need both smaller and larger bodies coming out at a lower price point. Hovering around $2K for bodies will be tough to justify unless they have vastly better features compared to full frame at similar prices. At lest Olympus has the appeal of PDAF if they bother putting it in more competitively priced cameras. On another note: Panasonic states they will NEVER (probably a bit exaggerated but..) abandon m43. https://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-we-will-never-give-up-on-mft-because-70-of-the-system-camera-market-is-not-full-frame/ That said, I have just bought my first EF lens that will for now be adapted to my G9 (a sweet 120-300 f2.8!) - along with some adapters and a canon teleconverter. I'm not sure I will buy more m43 lenses, because I have come to realize size doesn't bother me (and I have been buying fast glass to compensate for small sensor anyway). Eventually I will probably try out Sony FF or L-Mount, though I see myself keeping a lot of my m43 equipment anyway. There are still times when the size comes in handy, and no arguing the cameras (like the G9) are very good.

Love your site Andrew, and the unfiltered opinions as well - though I feel in this case you may have read a bit too much between the lines (probably because feeling dissed by BMD over the last few years?). I'd rather you have a critical look at the camera - you touched on a major omission like lack of IBIS - which I find to be a deal-breaker as the camera is too big to be mounted on many electronic stabilizers. Also, you could point out that while RAW and ProRes is great, why not provide an option with codecs similar to what Panasonic, Sony, and Fuji manages to put in - so we don't have to get crazy expensive cards, or somehow tag on a usb-c drive, making it even more bulky.

Being a hybrid shooter with a somewhat limited budget, I decided on the G9 for my photo needs, and with the pocket cinema camera 4k, I will cover any of my more advanced video needs. Fantastic Beast! Very excited about this camera!

I'm not sure if you intended it this way - but it sounds to me you think Panasonic is rushing to add features, in a bad way (I.e. focusing on the wrong things)? Regardless, I think Panasonic is showing that they are actively listening to the market and adding features people are actually asking for. (Of course, more so on the video side, which this site is about, than the photography side, where they are struggling more with sensor size and focusing limitations). I think the Sony reference is mostly because when Sony came out with 4K, people were saying "Why buy a Panasonic - the sony has stabilization, bigger sensor etc". Now Panasonic has clearly stepped it up with the best 4k features, stabilization AND probably the biggest dig to Sony, they do not overheat or run into recording limitations of any kind.

I think it would be cool to have it on the GX85, but I am in the camp that will likely get the G85, just because it does have these features like mic jack for Video. Sure, it is not outstanding quality, but for some things it will do (the same cannot be said for GX85 built in mic), and besides I can at least record a half decent sync track that would be easier to match with a recording from a dedicated recorder.

Tokina 28-70 F2.8, Tokina 100-300 F4 (it's a bit of a beast), a Tamron ultrawide, a Tamron macro 90mm, minolta 50mm 1.7, and a couple of others.

Yes, I recall the problem with that is that due to flange distance or something, you cannot get an adapter unless it has an additional piece of glass. I'm concerned enough with the glass in the booster, so that would probably not be wise. Maybe it is time to bite the bullet and ditch the Sony/Minolta glass. Sony just announced their new a99 successor, so they seem to keep it alive still. The odd thing is that Metabones creates a a-mount adapter that works with Fuji x (and Sony Nex, which makes a lot of sense of course)

i'm not looking for the older minolta md speedboosters, and I don't see anything for the Sony Alpha ones. I did search first you know.. I was hoping someone had communications from Metabones on what their plans are, or some obscure company has put one out.

I actually wonder how big the handheld electronic gimbals will become, as more and more cameras have really good built in stabilization. I can see something like a Panasonic/Olympus in some cases do without any other stabilization, and in other cases using glidecams etc.

First off, sorry if this has been asked before - I have been out of the loop for a while. I am looking for a speedbooster to use all my Sony Alpha/Minolta glass on my m43 cameras. I see Metabones so far has omitted creating an adapter, but does anyone know if there is anything in the works, or if other brands offer such an adapter? Thanks!

This reminds me of my woes with the Pana 35-100 2.8 and the ibis that even after their firmware update still has some jitter issues. This or the G85 could alternatively help by worst case simply turn off IS on the lens and use in body ibis instead... looking forward to testing that once I get a new camera.

Anyone know how the G80/85 will compare to the gx80/85 for video? Trying to decide which camera to get next. With the image stabilization being such an important feature, I think either (if similar otherwise) are good candidates rather than waiting for a gh5 which likely will cost much more.

20Mp sensor from the gx8 with 5K video at 24fps. Would utilize most of the sensor. ibis is needed or they will get eaten.. 4:2:2 10bit internal hopefully. Cheaper smaller simpler attachment than yagh for xlr and maybe sdi. Global shutter option on lower frame rates.

Well, I don't - I have tied up a lot of money in m43 so I'd rather pay a nominal fee for a major improvement that comes out 18 month after the camera was released, than not getting the function at all. I agree free would be better, but this is in all fairness sort of a special interest item that most soccer moms would not even be interested in. I think it is good that they at least use resources on functionality that a relatively few people will take advantage of. Panasonic should definitely be better at providing more free "mainstream" updates though. Even Olympus outshines Panasonic in this regard (though arguably, Panasonic tends to come out with more complete functionality off the bat, at least for video.). Samsung is the new guy on the block so they would be expected to go above and beyond to dig into the market.

If I had the GH4, I would rather just pay for it to support Panasonic's efforts in improving their firmware. The price is very reasonable.
