    Historical perspective also helps us appreciate just how very very good we have it now! For example, people might hate upon MFT for being "poor at low light" (ignoring that the GH5S is one of the very best there is!!), when honestly for most of your filmmaking career since 1996 you'd have given your kidney away to have had a camera even as "bad" at lowlight as say the Panasonic G7 is with some fast lenses! As that is miles and miles better in low light than the camcorders you were using. I expect that even in 2030, when we have a GH9 with lowlight performance that is double of what an a7Smk3 can do, and has 16 stops of dynamic range, with 8K 120fps , that we will still have people hating upon MFT because "oh it isn't as good in lowlight as this FF is" or "but it has half a stop less of dynamic range than Fuji does". No matter what the MFT system does, it won't be "good enough" for them.

That's a pretty damn blatant example, staring right at you in the face. 1) social media does indeed conflict with the "official" story. I live with someone from mainland china, so as a kiwi my social feed isn't the same as hers, and she'll be daily showing and telling me new news she's seeing. Which the Chinese censors are indeed trying hard to censor. 2) it is very early days for the coronavirus outside China, going to be interesting following that progression. Fingers crossed

    I agree with a lot of what you're saying, except on one small point... the BMPCC6K isn't available with a MFT mount option. (but it should be! Bad BMD)

    Newbies can often be the worst in having the lust for "full frame", perhaps due to being susceptible to FF propaganda online and feelings of inadequacy? As they're just starting out. And yet, they should be the ones who are the most important of all to stay away from buying into FF! As their budgets are so very limited. Imagine someone who buys that a7mk3 (with a kit lens) & 70-200mm but gets nothing else, vs someone else who is smarter and gets a Panasonic G9 (with its kit lens, the 12-60) & 35-100mm f2.8, but now has so much spare money left over they can also buy the GX85 as a spare body, the 12-35mm f2.8 as well etc etc Nah, the Panasonic G9 does that better.
  6. I felt the same annoying weight distribution problem with the C300mk1 when I operated it, and they didn't change it up much for the C300mk2, so I wouldn't hold out much hope a mk3 or others would fix that.

  9. Sticks will give a very precise clinical look to the footage, might not be what a person desires? Or they might just desire the practical speed of shooting which an easyrig will give vs a tripod. When you're setting up a shot it is much easy to play around and tweak the setup up when you're on your feet with an easyrig than with a tripod. A shoulder mount doesn't give the flexibility of an easyrig (like I said before, if I'm using a shoulder rig then I'm going to be by default often looking down on people! A short person would have the opposite problem). A steadicam adds greater complexities and costs. Not every production has the budget for a steadicam op, while an easyrig is (relatively) cheap. What if you want a variety of styles quickly? A small push in for one shot, the next shot you're moving the camera tracking the actor for a few footsteps, and then next you've a static shot. An easyrig can do a decent job at stimulating each of these, and will get it done waaaay faster than setting up a dolly, then putting it on a steadicam, then onto a tripod! So there are real practical benefits to choosing an easyrig, but even it have all the time in the world and an unlimited budget, you may still choose the easyrig for stylistic reasons. Yes, you might say the other approaches give a similar result, and the differences are only subtle. But that is like asking someone why do they need an 85mm when they've already got a 50mm lens? Why not just push in closer with your 50mm, the difference is only "subtle"?

    And lighter. And cheaper. And sometimes new tech arrives for smaller sensors first. You close your lens down to f5.6 and you've now lost all the benefits you thought you gained by choosing a larger sensor. Once all the FF have better rolling shutter performance then I bet MFT cameras will have leaped ahead and have even better rolling shutter performance than they do currently.

  13. Wish more low budget cinema lenses in general had swappable mounts. Especially as the market they're often trying to pitch them to, these are still BIG INVESTMENTS for them. And it would be reassuring to know you can likely use these lenses for a looooong time. As sure, you've been using a Panasonic GH5 for the last few years, and thus a MFT cinema lens seems like a great idea! But what about later in the year when you swap to a Fuji X-T4? And then in 2025 when you change over to a Sony a7Smk3 when it finally ships? Would be great to keep on bringing along your lenses with you! There is a mod you can do yourself for regular 16mm cameras to go wider, not S16, forgot the name of it at the moment.

  15. Yes, but look at the cost of an Alexa Mini / RED Gemini / etc with any of the mainstream anamorphic cinema lenses. You may find Tom Antos' setup doesn't cover even a tenth of the budget of those. Exactly! I'm excited by all these new "cheap" anamorphic options which are hitting the market. No anamorphic zooms yet though. Heck, I'd just like to see more affordable spherical cinema zooms hit the market as well!
  16. I bet the C100 isn't selling as well today as it was a few years ago. Don't know anybody who purchased a C100 recently, have a friend who purchased the C100mk2 but that was three years ago? And he's moved onto the UMP now. As why buy a C100mk2 when the FS5mk2 is only another grand and half?
  17. C100mk3 won't get 4K 10bit internal The C100 series hasn't even got 10bit HD external, EVER! I've seen easyrigs on sets of all sizes, from a small no budget short films to sets for netflix series
  18. Had coffee this week with a DoP, and he mentioned that a DoP he had coffee with recently has a day rate (labour only, not counting gear rental) of AUD$3K/day! *AND* he is flat out nonstop very very busy.
  19. I reckon users/Sony have worked on it a lot to improve the FS7 colors if you dig into and see what they've got up to. (over on the dxuser forums, and xdcam-users.com)
  20. They're very different beats, steadicam vs easyrig. If there is no walking around (or minimal), then (heh, if I could pick! ha, I'm not really at that level though) I'd go for easyrig over steadicam. Lots of movement? Of course steadicam (or gimbal) Indeed I am! Well well over 6 foot. And I say the same about some of my mates who are "tall" but not doing sound! Wasted opportunity.
  21. Very important when figuring out rates to calculate both what your labour is worth AND what your rental should be for the gear package you're providing, then add them together. (although I show them as separate line items on my invoice) Yeah you can have a turn over of a million bucks but net profit will be waaaaaaaaaaaaay lower Oh man, I should share with you a photo I took today (I just randomly stumbled across their shoot, while visiting a different company on their same street) of a MAJOR (and I mean seriously MAJOR) media company which was producing a video internally, the sound guy was doing a shockingly AWFUL job! I've been hired by them before, but not in a long long time though.

So many people think of MFT's sensor size as a "disadvantage", yet at times it is an ADVANTAGE
  25. I am borderline hobbyist / semi pro indie when it comes to the camera side of things, but I'm not chasing or trying to improve that side of things. I'm professional though as a sound mixer for shoots. It is my job / life I agree! Too many people are happy to give away the house for nothing Weddings would be more creatively fulfilling than real estate! But that means dealing with brides...
