Hey, he has to maximize his ad revenue clicks! 😅😂

Kinda tempted to get a Deity SMic3 myself (or a secondhand Deity SMic2), as I'd rather not put a pricey Sanken CS1e on a camera as a scratch mic when I'm on someone's shoots.
-
True, it's bad enough for Panasonic being spread thinly supporting two mounts, but to release a similar camera for both mounts at (almost) the same time would be kinda bonkers insane. Makes more sense for "a GX9 mk2" to come out a year or more after the S9 Instead they should release the opposite of a S9! Such as a GH7????? Or a LX100 / LX15 update, which is also "the opposite" to the S9, but in the other direction.
-
Who wouldn't want their boom to be even lighter? The new Deity S Mic3 and S Mic3S are out. All the goodness of the S Mic 2 but now even lighter. (by a lot! The S Mic3 is less than half the weight of a NTG3 or 416, the S Mic 3S is nearly half the weight of the S Mic3) I like also that you can buy the Deity Windshields separately as well (there are two versions: W01 & W02, shorter & longer). Should also be compatible with a lot of non-Deity mics as well. https://www.newsshooter.com/2024/05/31/deity-releases-the-new-updated-s-mic-3-and-s-mic-3s/

I truly hope my dreams come true and it is a S35 EVA2 with L Mount!! Can't make any other sense to release an APS-C L Mount camera??? As it would freak out all the Panasonic MFT users!!! Releasing a Medium Format camera in L Mount makes no sense???? Releasing a brand new mount is even more insane!! Thus surely it must be a MFT camera??? (or it's a P&S, no mount at all) So by a process of elimination the most likely cameras would be a Panasonic GH7 or GX9mk2??? Maybe an extremely small outlier chance of something such as say a Panasonic BGH2 (i.e. a BGH1 but with the guts of a GH6 inside it instead)
-
I reckon the only camera that aged better is the OG BMPCC! (although a very different camera, and also a fair bit older too)
-
Yeah in the context of what else existed back then, then Magic Lantern was amazing. Especially for the cost (if you couldn't afford a RED Epic). But in 2024??? You need to either be insane, or doing it purely for the fun of the process, or have zero clue whatsoever about the bigger picture needs. As we're spoiled with so many choices today that could be a better fit for your project. Yikes!!! He badly needs to upgrade from a Zoom H Series to a Zoom F8n. I think rather than dealing with a ML raw then if I wanted a hybrid camera that's weather sealed I'd go instead with a Canon 1D C or a Nikon Z8 or Panasonic S1H / GH6 or Sony FX3 / FX30 (or perhaps a7Smk3) or Fujifilm X-H2s or Canon R6 mk2 / R7 / R8 etc Because raw is over rated, and 10bit is good enough 99% of the time. Especially if you're working in an environment where weather sealing / low visibility / run & gun / etc matters! As you likely don't have a tonne of card space with you, along with a 1st AC, and DIT on set, to handle the data offloads and to be checking the footage. Rather you want something simple, reliable, and fast. Which isn't what describes ML raw, but does fit the use case of the Canon 1D C / Nikon Z8 / S1H / X-H2s / GH6 / FX30 / etc

I've been toying a little with buying another camera, a CCD one for the hell of it and the unique look. Seems like the Nikon D200 was the best ever CCD DSLR? And it's almost being given away at how low the prices are now. Either that or go nuts for "the best" with the Pentax 645D's massive medium format digital sensor that uses CCD, but that's still well over $1K secondhand Good point. A camera can come out that's 10% better than an ALEXA but if there is even a one day learning curve for the editor and grader to get up to speed with handling this new footage, then it's not a good deal for them to go with.
-
oh damn, I need to check out if that works with my old Fujifilm X-A3, would certainly get me using it more again As you just can't deny the damn ultra nice convenience of shooting everything with your cellphone (even if it's just a sh*tty $199 phone's camera)

Yeah, I suspect that a lot of people get a rude shock when their fantasy doesn't mean reality. And the release of the Komodo & Raven, plus the general march of time (which has made older RED DSMC1 bodies very affordable), has pushed a lot of REDs into the reach of almost "affordability" for many indie enthusiasts / semi pros / aspiring pros. We'll perhaps see the same happen with ARRI as, especially if an ARRI Mini can drop under US$10K in the next couple of years (which maaaybe it might, especially if the recession drags itself out for that entire length of time). What is your current "fun camera"? In some hypothetical world where you lost everything, but insurance pays you out, so you can start out again from scratch rebuying whatever, then what "fun camera" would you get?
-
Another aspect of "authenticating & marketing yourself" is if you're a "brand ambassador" who gets flown by them internationally for launches, then you're now a lot more legit in the eyes of clients / directors / agencies / producers, and you've upped your hireability a lot. I'd say that's a massively more valuable outcome for many of these smaller youtube channels, who are getting very little if any money from YouTube subs / views.
-
A Komodo and a Pyxis are much closer aligned with each other in terms of the shoot style / market niche they're targeting, than a Komodo and a Sony FX3 / a7Smk3 is as they're even further apart. The probably is that ZCam is still positioned in the same place in the market as where Blackmagic was a decade ago. So moving to ZCam is an even riskier bet.
-
Cheers for sharing this new YouTuber! I've been watching some more of his videos, he's quite good / entraining. Am surprised he only has a few hundred subs. I mean he makes some decent points why the Pyxis is "better". And if he is in financial strife, and is underwater with the Komodo-X, then is he necessarily going to admit that to his followers? And as he mentions in a more recent video, for his client base he doesn't need a RED Komodo-X: I mean if you think it is wild to sell a Komodo to get instead a Blackmagic Pyxis, then you'll blow your mind if you watch these videos of people selling their RED Komodo for instead a Sony FX3 (or an a7Smk3, or even a FX30):

I'd imagine this would make MrSMW very happy! https://www.l-rumors.com/samyang-is-recruiting-influencers-to-be-the-first-to-experience-and-own-samyangs-first-l-mount-lens/ There might also be a Sigma f1.8 full frame zoom coming? https://www.l-rumors.com/worlds-first-f-1-8-full-frame-autofocus-zoom-lens-is-coming-soon-from-sigma/

Nah, they are quite different cameras the BMD CInema 6K vs Panasonic S9. It certainly has some overlap. (probably even more overlap than you'd think) But they're definitely different niches. Slow paced vs fast paced. Haven't seen that video, so I don't know their reasons, but I'm not at all surprised to see such a switch. In a way both Komodo-X and Pyxis exists in a kinda similar space. They're not in the premium space of ARRI. They're not in the mid budget mainstream videography / camera op space, which is dominated by the Sony FX6. (well, depending on the part of the world you're in, some places have the FX9 being the more common default than the FX6) And the Canon C70 / C300mk3 / C500mk2 mops up everything that the Sony isn't selling to. Komodo-X and Pyxis both exist in that same space of "a good camera, but not one that a person specifically hires you for" (unlike a FX6/FX9 or an ARRI). DoP / Cam Ops usually get hired on a mix of: connections / camera they own / ability. ARRI and Sony FX6/FX9 (& to a lessor extent, C70/C300mk3/C500mk2) can get hired on the strength of the camera they own being a significant factor. (although networking and talent always are far more important factors to focus on!!) RED or BMD owners? Nah, usually that's going to be a very small or non-existent factor. Usually people are buying those cameras (RED or BMD) for themselves. Because they need "a camera" to shoot with, and they've decided to not go down the bread and butter Sony/Canon jobs (usually because they're chasing the narrative filmmaking path, or shooting for the high end). But they can't afford the likes of an ARRI! But from a brutal financial analysis aspect, it probably wouldn't make much difference to their overall income for the year if they got a secondhand $1.5K RED Raven brain vs the latest brand new RED Komodo-X. Which is quite different to the Sony or ARRI shooter, as there will be for them be a massive difference if they pick up a $1.5K Sony FS5 secondhand vs a brand new Sony FX9 (or an old ARRI Alexa Classic vs an ARRI 35). So if this YouTuber was feeling the financial pressure, then it makes a lot of sense for them to sell the Komodo-X while it still is holding up in value on the secondhand market and instead get a cheap Blackmagic Pyxis. Or maybe they're not under intense financial pressure, but they simply feel their investments need to be shifted around and reprioritized. Maybe rather than a Komodo-X they'd benefit more from having a Dana Dolly and an Aputure 1200D? So they sell the RED and swap it out for a cheaper BMD, then overall they've got themselves a better camera / lighting / grip package than before. I've seen both types of scenarios happen.

I like this conspiracy theory! Sounds fun. Wasn't there a rumor recently about the Panasonic S1H mk2 being not too far away? https://www.4kshooters.net/2023/03/23/leak-suggests-panasonic-s1h-ii-may-have-8k-phase-detection-autofocus/ https://www.l-rumors.com/l2-first-rumored-panasonic-s1h-ii-specs-8k24p-and-built-in-nd/ Oh noes, don't kill the fun with facts before it has even started! 😞 In a hopeless attempt to keep the conspiracy alive.... maybe there was a leak from BMD themselves? Someone outside BMD knew they were planning a big price cut to move out old stock after the launch of the Blackmagic Design PYXIS Yeah, that's how we first saw for sure confirmation of the S9, because an Amazon listing for handgrip/cage was up for it. Yes I would have thought then it makes more sense to be doubling down on the Panasonic LX15 / LX100 series. Bring out their next generation of them. They're "large sensor" P&S cameras, but to be fair, still smaller than the X100 sensor. But if Panasonic brings out an APS-C sensor camera, that's very unusual, it would be a bit confusing for Panasonic branding? They've never had recently an APS-C camera (wellll... technically the Varicam LT I guess was the most recent one?? ha), as Panasonic has been all about MFT or "Full Frame". It's just a backlash against the slick looking perfect images, and looking backwards to go retro. That's why those old CCD P&S cameras are selling for sky high prices.
-
Because a mirrorless sensor is huge, which thus needs a HUGE lens to have a comparable zoom range as the typical camcorder has. The vaguely closest thing might be the smallest of the mirrorless sensor, a MFT, in a camcorder. And we've had that, the Panasonic DVX200. It's very compact! But yet still a lot bigger than what your typical family (grand)parents / tourist holidaymakers / etc would like to use. I'd say the modern camcorder of today is the fairly awesome Sony PXW-Z90V, it's a (semi)professional grade camcorder. And super compact. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1362802-REG/sony_pxw_z90v_pxw_z90_4k_hdr_xdcam.html Or if looking for a cheaper consumer grade camcorder, then the equivalent is the Sony FDR-AX700. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1362622-GREY/sony_fdr_ax700_b_fdr_ax700_4k_camcorder.html This. Even though compact cameras (be they P&S or superzooms) have also been squished by smartphones and mirrorless, they still are quite an appealing alternative to a camcorder today. Back in the day old school camcorders made sense partially because the video from P&S cameras were so terrible (or non-existent!). But today if I wanted better video than my cellphone, but wanted something smaller / less obvious than a mirrorless / DSLR, then why would I pick a camcorder?? I'd probably go with a camera such a Sony RX100 or Panasonic LX100 or Fujifilm X100 or Nikon Coolpix A Then I get better video and a great stills camera too, and it's more compact / more incognito than a consumer grade camcorder is! If I need more zoom than one of these P&S cameras, I'd probably go for a Nikon Coolpix P900 / Panasonic FZ1000 / Sony RX10 / Nikon Coolpix A900 / Panasonic FZ80 / etc instead. They're super cheap on the secondhand market, and again, they're good stills cameras too! I have good news for you! You can get a Sony HDW-F900R for less than a thousand bucks these days, far less than the hundreds of thousands of dollars they used to cost: https://www.ebay.com/itm/226158157074

This was a very ugly hit piece against Panasonic by Gerald. See, I see no problem whatsoever with Panasonic not inviting Gerald (& others) because they believe the Panasonic S9 isn't for him. This is no different whatsoever to if camera very specifically targeting street photographers got released, then they won't be inviting people who specialize in the niche of bird photography!! That's silly, as they might just end up complaining about: FPS / weather proofing / crop mode / buffer size / their own weird ergonomic needs / etc However those same people could find themselves still being invited to a release of a camera that is for bird photographer (IF they haven't just done an ugly hit piece against the brand! Such as Gerald just did).

Such as Gerald just did). Wouldn't surprise me at all https://archive.ph/atk0f Maybe, maybe not. Gerald has positioned himself as going a different path, that's he is uniquely the 'honest/direct" reviewer. In a way, him putting out a video like this is very "on brand" for him, he's doing what he does ("calling it as it is"). He's definitely branded himself as that. Yeah, I mean, I'd still definitely watch any of his videos about a specific camera before I make a big purchase of one. And I enjoy watching his videos for entertainment! But due to the fact he has zero experience, he does often make unbalanced / incorrect conclusions I reckon, relative to the needs of a professional. Smaller channels such as Cranky Cameraman or Luke Seerveld provides better value to watch. Curtis Judd suffers from the same problem, a fantastic person and channel, but I feel his final conclusions / emphasis he arrives upon can miss the mark when it comes to relevance for the Sound Depart. (but then again, I feel we're not his target market at all. He instead serves the needs of videographers / students / indies / hobbyists) To be fair, the skills are very different when it comes to being a successful YouTuber and being a successful worker in the film industry
-
That's a 1/1.2-type sensor, even smaller than S16 but yet also not that small either, and most S16 lenses would be a good choice to use with it.

I still think a decade later there still hasn't been a sale as good as those US$500 BMPCC cameras! Also, thank you very much for making me feel ollllldddd by reminding me it was a DECADE ago! 😮 🤣 (as if it wasn't bad enough for me already right now, having a birthday tomorrow 🤯 )
-
Well, I'm not going overseas for film work. So I won't be bringing a full sound package, I'll be extremely limited in terms of what I can bring with me. (I'll still bring something, enough to do little short films on the weekends perhaps?)
-
Depends on your priorities? (speed of turn around / stills vs video / etc) And what type of traveling you're doing?? Certainly something I've been pondering myself lately, as I'm hopefully going overseas next year for a few months. What do I bring? My Panasonic GH4 + Fujifilm X-E3? Or more cameras? (my Nikon D5200/D90 as well? Or my Panasonic G6) Or less... just one of them?? Or buy yet another camera?? Maybe splurge out like a nut case and buy a brand new Sony FX30 to rule them all? Or something less crazy, a secondhand Panasonic G9mk1? Or a Nikon D750 or Nikon Z6mk1?? Or an old school Sony a7Smk1 with the Monster Adapter LA-FE2??? (or a7S mk2? Or Sony a7Rmk2 because it does better S35 filming?) Or Sony ZV-E10?? Should I go out and get a point and shoot such as a Sony RX100mk3? Or a cheaper Panasonic LX7?? Do I bring my crappy GoPro Hero 3 Black? Or go out and buy a fancy Sony RX0? Or a DJI Osmo Pocket 2?? And don't even get me started on the question of what lenses to bring... (or even worse, I haven't even touched upon discussing what sound gear to bring... !!!)
