I'd rather they come out with a radical 15-90mm f2.8 lens instead
-
"Best" Only true depending on how you define "best" ha, Nikon still needs to complete their trior of f2.8 DX lenses! (which will now NEVER happen) They've only got their Nikon 17-55m f2.8G This is an issue Thom Hogan hammers away at. A few of MANY times has commentated on this: http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/nikon-2016-news/february-2016-nikon-news/buzz-buzz-dx-lenses-.html http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/nikon-2018-news/august-2018-nikon-news/whats-up-with-dx.html

From nearly $87 in late 2014 to nearly $4 now at the start of 2020 Ouch!! https://marketrealist.com/2019/08/five-tech-stocks-that-are-risky-for-investors/ Interesting, FitBit is another one of those early market leaders which absolutely dominated their niche but since then have lost over 90% of their stock value in just a few years, like GoPro did. Used to be (still is) that "GoPro" was interchangeable with the concept and name "action camera". Fitbit used to be like that, it was the name in wearable tech. (sidenote: I just purchased my first "wearable tech"! If we don't count my heartrate monitor I had back in the 1990's. Got last week a Garmin Forerunner 235, found out the next day my brother has a Garmin Forerunner 935! Funny coincidence, as I had my heart set on a 935 until I saw a deal on a 235 that was too good so pulled the trigger)

DJI iterates quite fast, I bet a DJI Osmo Pocket mk2 can't be super far away. Yup, their top of the line latest Black Edition don't sell for quite as much as they used to. Still don't think they're great value however. There is a reason the stock price of GoPro shares have massively tanked in recent years.

Both of these cameras have wide angle adapters for them. (that's what I used to do with my Panasonic G6 / 14mm f2.5 combo, before I got the SLR Magic 8mm f4) Especially in the context of a Netflix show (or anything with even a little money behind it) then the difference in cost between a GoPro and a "BMD Micro Cinema Camera, or a Z Cam E1, or E2, or RX0mk2, or GH5S, or etc..." is absolutely nothing at all in the grand scheme of things. A rounding error. I was working on a hunting tv show a year ago which was using a GoPro for lots and lots of shots, I suggested to the field producer he really should give the Sony RX0 a go! (bet it would be a better match for their 2x Sony FS7 cameras as well) Am sure they're still using GoPros today... most people just don't care about technology like we do. How are you liking the Panasonic AF101 in 2020? I almost almost almost got a Panasonic AF101, and I would have, if I hadn't stumbled across an insanely insanely crazy cheap deal on a Sony PMW-F3 (a bargain for back then years ago, if I was to try to sell it for that price today it would be too much though of course).

He isn't working in the sound department now though? Doesn't seem like it. You'll be producing an Australian film?

Don't think the Z Cam E2 needs a battery sidehandle, this is a better use for a sidehandle to store the drive inside it. (and the price being sub one hundred seems very reasonable for film equipment) As you can whack a big beefy NP-F970 on the back of a Z Cam E2 already, and you can get them with D-Tap built in! Thus that one battery can also run your monitor as well. (and that monitor can be a touch screen to control the camera!! Just like say RED Monitors are) When I saw this combo setup (single battery powering everything, touch control monitor, drive integrated sidehandle) it made me more tempted to get the Z Cam E2 than anything else I've read about the E2 since it was released, as that is some smart thinking with a very very tidy little package to set it up like that. (just wish there were more E2 cameras out there.... so I'd have a chance at grabbing one secondhand on eBay! They're still far too rare)

A better question is why don't people for car shots (or any other tight/tricky shots, like from inside a fridge, or in a toilet stall, or whatever) use a BMD Micro Cinema Camera, or a Z Cam E1, or E2, or RX0mk2, or GH5S, or etc... People are too comfortable in taking the easy non-controversial choice "this is a GoPro shot" ("Nobody got Fired for Buying IBM") Still will take some more time before the concept of "this is a GoPro shot" will die off from being inside people's minds. For "GoPro vlogging" I'd suggest instead a DJI OSMO Pocket, in fact I was just yesterday talking with my Partner about that as she is wanting one. It's shameful how little my GoPro Hero 3 Black is worth now (NOTHING!), vs how much I used. That is why I'm keeping my Sony PMW-F3 ? Except it isn't the most convenient camera to vlog with....

oh I know they have their usages still, I was just surprised my friend had got a GoPro for more general filming

In another couple of decades (once my back has given out on me) I am thinking to shift on over to producing instead. Had applied last week for a course on Line Producing, but unfortunately I found out yesterday I wasn't selected, the competition was too fierce. (plus I'm sure they found it weird a Mixer was applying???) Waiiiiiitttt a second, that was shot in New Zealand! You were in NZ, how long for? (where do you live these days?) Skimmed over the list of credits on IMDB, didn't recognise anybody, although I see a later short film the director released last year had Harley Neville has the associate producer who I do know of well indeed.

10bit is like 4K vs 1080, even if you're going to be filming in 8bit (or 1080) most of the time, it is really nice to have the option of 10bit for when you want it. Hopefully soon manufacturers will realize 10bit is just as important at 4K to include in their cameras.
-
Does it cost $250/camera to include ProRes though?? I very highly doubt it! Otherwise a BMPCC with ProRes could not have been sold for $500! Don't think most people would want to mix E Mount and MFT systems together. A better analogy would be to say: Instead of a Panasonic GH5S, a person could for only a few hundred dollars more buy a BMPCC4K *AND* Panasonic G9. You'd then also have a camera with the G9 which is much better for stills than the GH5S, while also having a very able (even more so now!) B Cam to your A Cam BMPCC4K.

Same, I'm always lagging behind, even if I get excited by new tech and think "this is perfect". Because the best deals are to be found secondhand, especially once the tech is a couple of years old (or even 5+ yrs old). I almost never buy anything brand new. The only items I have "recently" purchased exactly at the moment of launch are: Sound Devices 833 (as I'd been waiting for a "633 mk2" for years) Zoom F8n Timecode Systems Ultrasync Zoom F4 (because the Zoom F series was massively groundbreaking, worthwhile getting in early on! My only regret is I hadn't started even earlier than the F4, and got a F8 back when it launched. Understandable though, as back at the F8 launch then Zoom had a reputation down deep in the gutters). The only other recent products which have at least slightly tempted me to buy them at launch are: Rode NT-SF1, Zaxcom Nova, OR-444 ORCA 3S harness, and Sanken CS-M1.

This was stats from 2019, so likely they were filmed in 2018. Thus is no surprise to me that C700 doesn't have a strong showing there. Is more interesting to see the stats in 2020. (although my gut instinct is to suspect C700 won't have a strong showing) Am not surprised to see a lack of C300mk2 cameras, look there are also no FS7 cameras there either! (be much more interesting if they showcased the top 43 documentary shows from Netflix, I bet we'd see a FS7 there! And a scattering of C300mk2 too?) Because the C300mk2 was not designed to play at this level, the C300mk2 was Canon's response to the FS7 for the low budget productions. https://ymcinema.com/2019/05/28/the-cameras-behind-netflix-best-series-spoiler-red-dominates/ Looking at the comparisons between mid 2019 and 2019 I see the Panasonic Varicam has experienced a big drop, which is sad. As in 2018 it was the #3 camera. Looking deeper into the results I'd say the two major factors are ARRI ALEXA LF & Sony VENICE The last Netflix production I was on set for last year they had 3x VENICE. Going into the future I bet 2020's stats will show this trend growing even stronger. As VENICE was still largely in "kinda beta" firmware up until recently, just lately in 2019 has it got some really big firmware updates to bring VENICE into prime time. 2018 was very early days for VENICE, that's why the earlier survey only showed one VENICE camera. We're going to see many more VENICE productions coming. As for ARRI, well, they're ARRI! Of course they'll be picked. And now they've got the LF and even better the Mini LF (for gimbal / crane / car / etc shots), which the MiniLF didn't exist last year, then the ARRI cameras will only continue to dominate Netflix stats even further I'd say the most impressive result from that chart is how the Sony F55 (which is the oldest camera on the list) still has a number of productions shooting with it! (the F55 is in 4th= place!)

I disagree, because smaller sensors always will get future new specs first at a lower cost. Which is what interests BMD, I expect/hope there will in the future be more MFT sensors with something special at a low cost which catches BMD's eye and they investigate building a camera around. Additionally, I keep on holding out hope BMD will realise the brilliance of combining S35 with MFT mount! Imagine a BMPCC6K MFT or URSA Mini 4.6K MFT?? ? (bonus points if it is a locking MFT mount!) I wonder if the new generation of Panasonic MFT might follow the lead of what Panasonic did with the L Mount. A Panasnic GH6 would be like a S1H, a massive bulky body (the biggest MFT has ever seen from Panasonic) with a tonne of amazing features packed into it. While the Panasonic G9mk2 would be like the S1, a solid "pro" body but still kept to reasonable small/portable size just like the G9/GH5 is today, and the G9mk2 would have all the features of the GH5 plus whatever they can squeeze in from the GH6 while keeping the body still as small and compact as it was before.

Was surprised when a friend rang me up last night and told me he purchased a GoPro 8 Black People are still buying those???? Gee.... Personally I think for his purpose a DJI Pocket Osmo + secondhand Panasonic FZ1000 would've been a better pick, and cost around the same amount.
-
Yup, and I assume those electronic contacts are the reason you can't swap them ? ? :-/ Wish Fuji would make a dumb X Mount for their own lenses to swap in.

It's interesting to see what content YouTube pushes: Look at the Rewind video they did a year ago (the most downvoted video ever!), is obvious they want a whitewashed coporate look for the advertisers. They're cracking down even harder this week with the roll out of the "child safe" policies
-
Well, they're giving up on 4K now and going back to Canon Once they've got the market share they want (via aggressively pushing out new specs), then they'll be turning into the Canon of the future.
-
He doesn't qualify as "lesser known", they're too (in)famous.

I wonder how long until he calls me out for posting links as well.... ? What camera were you thinking about getting? It isn't a terrible idea, I know for example people who went halves on buying a Sony FS7 or Canon C300mk2 when it came out. (in the case of the C300mk2, I think they divided it in quarter or maybe it was even between five of them? As was a tightknit flat of guys who'd recently graduated film school. A good situation if you can get it and trust everyone!) Am tempted sometimes to partner with a friend or two to go halves on buying an ARRI ALEXA Classic, but honestly I don't think I can personally justify owning even a third of an ARRI so no point.
