The importance of lens rendering / look at slower apertures
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
You can craft a lot of depth / "3D-ness" into a scene via fantastic set design and cinematography, and then using deep DoF only showcases that even more. -
Nikon fanboys: but we do better stills! And we were first for HDSLRs.... why oh why has the filmmaking community forgotten us? ? Fujifilm fanboys: You want IBIS?? Ummm errr... look over there, we've got the X-H1! It's all good, stop hassling us about IBIS, if you want it, we've got it. Oh, you want a bigger sensor? Ummm errr.... look over there, we've got the GFX 100! Now please stop hassling us, and just appreciate the pretty Fuji colors :-) Samsung fanboys: yes, we know it is 2020 (and we've technically be so called "dead" for years), but we're still THE BEST! Pentax fanboys: who? Edit, a recent update for Nikon: Nikon fanboys in 2019 (errr... and 2020, and... when is it going to arrive???): but we have RAW! (errrr.... "soon", eventually, one day, sometime?)

Eh, an external battery + MixPre3 + VariND is still less hassle, easier to add, and more compact than adding a gimbal to replace the lack of IBIS. (although of course a gimbal would be ultimately more powerful than IBIS)

13.6% want to be a filmmaker?? Good grief!

But what is the sensor size of the human eye?

Any "Affordable" Primes With Minimal Focus Breathing?
IronFilm replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
But if we told you then it wouldn't be a secret ? More seriously, the days of dirt dirt cheap but excellent manual lenses you could pick up for pennies are largely long gone, once the rise of mirrorless happened (which we're many years into now) then the good ones got swooped up. Plus more generally, the rise of digital cinema has put many vintage lenses back into fashion. Vintage cinema lens sets which a couple of decades ago could be got for "cheap" are now selling instead for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. -
Any "Affordable" Primes With Minimal Focus Breathing?
IronFilm replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
There are folks who think of Zeiss CP.2 primes as "affordable"! (& I wouldn't strongly disagree with them) And you can get those in EF mount -
Yeah, I know even "simple" things take time to do. But implementing 24fps should be relatively low hanging fruit here, it's not like we're asking for 240fps! And a *LOT* of content still today gets shot in 1080, thus it is kinda cruel to leave it out at launch. Shows their priorities, pretty low for videomakers.
-
Because they had no better option.... or only very limited other options. But the world is now very different to when the 1D C was launched.

What cameras are you shooting with currently? -
Delaying 4K 60fps is understandable due to bandwidth limitations / processing power limitations to work around. But you can't say the same about 1080 24p That is like me saying I'm going to run a sub 3hr Boston Marathon qualifier in a couple of month's time, but I can't go for a half hour 3 mile jog with you because it is too fast / too long for me to handle. That just doesn't add up
-
Not being able to do 60fps is usually due to a technical limitation they're still working on. You've got no such excuse for excluding 24fps
-
I can 100% bet as *certain* that even ARRI themselves will brag about "better colors" and such once they bring out their new sensor this year.

@newfoundmass So that's about NZ$400/week? Doesn't sound too bad to me, depends a lot on where they live and what sort of house it and what their room is like. Plus factor in that income can be much higher in LA than NZ. And there are always other routes to take to living in LA, there are surely cheaper places to live in while you are tying to get your first break. Or you could (for the cheaper rent) live outside Hollywood say in San Diego or Bakersfield, commuting into LA for gigs for a couple of years until you've built up your LA network of contacts and can make the proper leap to moving into LA

"No 1080 at 24p" ???? ?♂️ Classic Canon at it again ?♂️? Kinda defeats the purpose of being a small camera with great AF if you can't effectively use it on a gimbal ??♂️?♂️

If you've been following Potato Jet from the start watching all his videos then you'll know he has talked about when he first moved to LA, he was barely scraping by, having to hustle hard, life didn't come to him easy. Any American can move to LA if they wish and give it a shot (although there are probably better places to choose now than saturated Hollywood, such as Atlanta).

This. If you're friends with professional DoPs it is normal to see them posting on social media a new camera / lens / gimbal / drone / light / toy / whatever that they're using on a shoot. (which is a smart idea by the way! To share what you're working on and doing. If you're a working DoP and not making use of social media then you're missing out) Potato Jet is just taking this to the next level and posting it on YouTube as well, by making videos about it. (although that can be an additional full time job in itself, you've got to work very very hard at it to have a successful YouTube channel) You can have a portable toilet in your van.

That one video alone might stop ARRI ALEXA Classic prices from falling any further in 2020
-
I don't think he is mega rich at all. Just normal middle class American, perhaps upper middle class. He himself only owns a RED Dragon (I think? Some kind of RED anyway) and recently a dirt cheap ARRI ALEXA Classic, plus some cheapie cameras like Canon mirrorless / DSLRs. So how does he do it? Via his network of contacts and collaborating. He lives in LA after all, and is connected to that world. Exactly. Plus look at his old videos from a year or two ago. They were somewhat less "flashy", but as his channel has grown then brands are more willing to want to work with him. And other YouTubers too for collaboration etc His channel has really grown a lot since he started. I've been watching it for a while now. He is not spending a million dollars a year on his YouTube channel. (MrBeast though would be spending way more than that!!)

You never use AF and you love your current Voigtlander , seems like the answer is crying out obvious! Get another Voigtlander Agreed! And just because a lens isn't perfectly sharp with a 20megapixel camera (or even a 36+ megapixel camera!) doesn't at all mean it is a bad idea to use for your 2megapixel (FHD!) shooting. Get both! After all 7.5mm and 10.5mm are quite different FoV

Yup, once had a director disappointed when I showed up with a teeny BMPCC to shoot this: He insisted on using a RED ONE MX for another shoot, ha! (sorry, still got no footage from that to share yet) Even though I'm not personally the greatest fan of the R1 at all. Ah well, whatever makes the client happy! :-)

I've got a BDS / battery cup / etc for my other bag rigs, so Hirose is no big deal at all. There is a vertical NP-F battery sled for the MixPre, which seems perfect as the MixPre is so small already the height boost might be a good thing. Ah perfect, yes of course, 5W/hr paired with a single NP-F970 seems like what I want. Thanks, made my decision now.

Should've used the Panasonic batteries instead of V mount! As the EVA1 can be quite a small camera
