  1. Not unreasonable.... I'm on shoots now and then with an ARRI with lens sets which cost even more than the camera body cost! Isn't at all unusual. Ditto, I was recommending the G7 to people for ages as well. But now the G85 has fallen so far, it is hard to not recommend the G85 instead of the G7 Yeah it was funny how the a6500 had WORSE 1080 than the older a6000 Ditto! Was quite freeing once I accepted my main #1 focus now is the sound department. I shoot on average maybe one paid gig per month as a "cameraman", and I don't actively seek that work. All my other shooting is casually for myself / social media, or vlogs for my YouTube channel. Honestly my Panasonic G6 could last me YEARS longer..... it is just the selfish side of me which wants a new camera ? AND AUDIO!!!! If I ever get serious about jumping back into the cinematography side of things instead of sound, then I will invest first more into lighting modifiers and support gear, such as: cutters / diffs / C stands / foggers / etc etc As even if you're using only "natural light" or just a couple of lights, then how you can tweak those lights can make a massive MASSIVE difference
  2. If only the X-T3 had IBIS for the same price as it is currently, then I'd be all over that Agreed, don't rush into it. If you wait long enough there will be another big big sale just before the X-T4 ships as they try to clear inventory..... Scripted/crewed shoots / locked off interviews: X-T3 for the DR Run & gun / doco / ultra low budget / YT / events / etc: GH5 for IBIS Don't forget AUDIO!! I work on heaps of professional shoots where anything from a FS7 to an ARRI camera is used, you'd be surprised how often they're rolling with 1080! As an ex wedding shooter I can say a monopod is an AMAZING tool! You are still very low profile with a very small footprint, barely large than going handheld, you're still fast and nimble, but your shots are so much more steady and look better!
  3. Those are definitely too strong it feels to me! That is why I prefer a 1/2 Black Pro Mist
  4. At only a two hundred buck difference it is a no brainer to buy the GH5! Even if you don't want it right now, there are lots of GH5 video features that there is a chance you'll want in the near future Not a bad conclusion! I've been wanting to buy a G85 for ages for my vlogging as an upgrade from my G6 (also been wanting a FS700 for ages as a 4K upgrade from my Sony PMW-F3). But the longer we wait, the cheaper the cameras get (on eBay/TradeMe/FB/etc), or the better the cameras get that are within reach of our budget! (for instance perhaps by the end of 2020 I might be able to get a G9 or FS5 instead of the G85/FS700 I was considering for a similar price back last year)
  5. I don't disagree! I agree with you. However nothing you said there requires using a camera from Netflix's list for shooting your pilot. Feel free then to pick whatever you prefer: GH5S / E2 / BMPCC6K / X-T3 / Z6 / whatever!
  6. The Zoom F8 when it came out 4 ish years was a MASSIVE GAME CHANGER for the sub $1K price point, but *not* just for audio quality like many people think, and not just for how many tracks it was (ten!), but also for it feature set! Nothing else beforehand had all those features which the F8 now has: metadata, bluetooth app, affordable dedicated fader panel, USB keyboard, automix, ambisonics, TC I/O, and more and more it goes on... plus all in a very very small size! With a low power drain. Unfortunately the F8 came out at a bad bad time for me, as: a) I had just recently invested in a Sound Devices 552 / Tascam DR680 combo (arguably for its time, the "best" low low low budget setup??) & b) I was VERY skeptical about anything from Zoom (due to their horribly poor reputation) But the users and reviews of the F8 turned my opinion around, so I got the F4 when it got launched. And wow, what a big leap forward that was for me!
  7. Are you making Netflix commissioned productions? If you are: you'll have plenty of budget to hire Varicam/Venice/whatever! If you are not: then that list doesn't matter at all.

    RED Komodo

Yeah, wasn't it similar in size to a Panasonic GH5S? But with an EF mount!!

    RED Komodo

They do not. ARRIs are owned by DoPs and production companies as well, yes it is more commonly rented, but lots of owners of them out there as well.

Wasn't that the purpose of Raven? Wonder why they discontinued it. Their patent won't last forever: 1) Will eventually be overturned. 2) Will expire eventually in a handful more years anyway 3) We'll get acceptable workarounds to legally dodge around the patent instead

Depends on what YT channels you listen to, lots do discuss the URSA range. But then again many run of the mill channels only talk about the low end mirrorless they can get themselves, or the highest of high end stuff they lust over. And forget about the world in between!. I agree!! But lots of people are wowed by "RED", and are biased towards buying a RED instead. Just pointing out they're quite easily within reach if you look at DSMC1 bodies (let alone original R1 bodies!!).

The leap in price from an URSA Mini 4.6K to a secondhand RED Scarlet MX wasn't much, if anything at all. And at the moment ARR ALEXA Classic prices are only a few hundred dollars more than an URSA Mini Pro G2! Sony always had raw options at "affordable" prices below RED/ARRI

    Panasonic GH6

Except the EVA1 is the odd one out.... with a completely different mount to all those other Panasonics! Panasonic should have released an EVA1 MFT
  14. If people are paying money to hire you, and you don't mind the extra bulk of a FS7 vs FS5 (I do have one friend who went with a FS5 instead because of this) then it is a no brainer to get a FS7
  15. Wouldn't the lowlight in the G80 at 1080 be better than from a G5/G6?
  16. From Adorama too! And in "very good" condition. Sometimes I wonder if I should have got a FS7/F5 for the same price as what I paid for my Sound Devices 833! Heh, the temptation to go back to the camera side of things will always be strong.
  17. Nikon Z6 is better than the EOS R or a7 mk3 And if you look around for secondhand deals then you find a Z6 deal at a significant saving.
  18. Maaaaybe many decades into the future we might see a change, like we've had with the change over from T Power to Phantom Powering. But I'm sure if that happens, there will be easy to use adapters / conversions done. Exactly what I mean! (btw, the 416 design is even older than you think.... as wasn't the 415T from the 1950's?)
  19. Because they're copying the Deity V Mic D3 Pro but at a higher price? It is hard to not look at the Rode and be struck by the similarity, they definitely must've used the Deity as inspiration. Ohhhhh... I want to hear more! Why do manufacturers make lenses in more than one focal length?
  20. Yes, when you're comparing a $500 vs $1,500 camera then it is much more likely an extra $1K is going to be a deal breaker for a potential buyer
  21. Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if brand new prices of the G80/G85 have got close to their minimum they'll ever reach, but I'm referring to secondhand prices which always will keep on going down. And if the G95 had been an amazing camera that would have forced the G85 much lower. But as it is now, not many people would sell their G85 for a G95! And plenty of people (like myself) would choose a secondhand G85 over a new G95 So in a year and half they're still basically the same price as what you essentially paid for your body back then? That's kinda my point! Haven't seen the big drop in price I'd hoped for. Still not as big a blunder as what Nikon did with their own "large" sensor compacts..... the Nikon DL series! What a bloody screw up blunder by them. Yes, I agree re. the G80/G85 - that's part of the reason I eventually bought a G9 (the other main reason was 4k60p), on which the 1080p quality is in a different league, really. 1080 isn't good in the G85?? I thought it was decent (at least compared to how poor the a6300 did its 1080 vs 4K....) As I could imagine there might be times I'd do 1080, such as when I know I"ll be rambling on for an hour or so into the camera and I've got limited card space left.
  22. I too wish the G95 was better! Would have put more pressure on the G85 prices to come down..... (I want one!)
