As an X-A3 owner I welcome the price drops on the X-A5 caused by the announcement of the X-A7, as that is what I'll get next once I lose my X-A3
-
Everything you said! Except I don't care about global shutter
-
Damn it Sony!!!! Why do you have to inflict the XDCA back on us once again??? Bet that means the stock camera won't do timecode either ?
-
They're showing up dirt cheap on ebay now And I'm seeing AMIRAs more on "low/no budget" productions I'm working on that might have been a FS7/F5 type project instead in the past. AMIRAs are not as unaffordable as you might think. Although I guess still out of reach for the OP maybe, perhaps.

"quiet something"? Or "quite something"? Or both? ? I am myself tempted by their DIY Schoeps clone, but I certainly won't be buying it any time soon! Not after the 833 has made me broke as a pauper
-
Hmmmm.... I personally would definitely not call the F6 an "upgrade" Depends a lot on what your line of work is, for the kind of work I do professionally then hands down I'd choose the F4 over the F6
-
There are many people who are not fans of the 633 pre amps, or its (lack of) limiters One of the many things the 833 fixes about the 633, as Scorpio has the best pre amps Sound Devices has ever made

Renting vs buying doesn't have to be an all or nothing approach. You can do a mix of both buying and renting. (i.e. buying a cheaper camera, and sometimes renting the more expensive camera) How often do you need need NEED a 4K camera? Once a week? Once a month? Once a season? If you only need one once a season, then it is a no brainer to buy a C100 mk1 (or other similar / cheap 1080 /whatever camera) for your daily usage, and only rent something else when you need NEED it. If you need NEED a 4K camera every week, then it should be a no brainer to get a C200 / C300 mk2 / FS7 / FS5 / whatever which *is* 4K In between, such as say if you need it just once a month, then it gets trickier which path to go down. And you need to crunch the specific numbers for yourself to see which way makes the most financial sense for you personally. That is a really good plan for him Kye!
-
I was just joking to my friend that I need to spend ALL MY MONEY that is in my bank account before the end of the month! ha That would just about allow me to buy from overseas both a FS7 together with a FS5 I reckon, shall I do it?
-
For the line of work I do (as someone who has specialised in the sound department), I wouldn't even call RodeLinks or Rode GO "100% usable" Rode GO: nonlocking connector, is a dealbreaker RodeLink: BULKINESS, is a dealbreaker Yes, in a pinch, a Rode wireless is better than nothing! But that is a rather low bar to set for it?
-
Ah good, so you've got a Zoom F4 and other wireless, shoguns / accessories / etc as well ? I've been quite partial to the Sanken CS1e recently, but it depends on the shoot. There is also the Sanken CSM1 which I haven't ever tried ( did you end up getting it @Kisaha ?), but I would like to. Schoeps just announced today their CMC1 which makes their MK41 even more appealing.

Something to keep in mind is that you're coming from the pro stills world, and there isn't the same need/demand for AF in the pro film world. Mannual focus or "lessor AF" might still be sufficient for your needs, especially if it means you're buying a camera which isn't crippled in every other area and/or waaaay overpriced. Additionally AF (even in "the best" AF systems, such as Canon, or recent Sony cameras. Or the Nikon Z series) is nowhere near like what you experience in top like DSLRs for stills. And there are lots of weird "gotchas" that Canon (which supposedly has "the best" AF) will throw at you even with their AF, such as perhaps only AF in the centre, or maybe now AF in 4K, or no good AF except with certain ones of the latest Canon lenses, etc etc (it various from Canon camera body to camera body, as to how Canon has chosen to cripple their AF system).
-
First suggestion: DO NOT BUY CANON!!! But if you can't do the 1st suggestion, then my 2nd suggestion is: Buy a cheap C100 mk1 with DPAF from eBay (which is even cheaper than the mk2!), as you don't need greater than 1080 or high FPS. Then just wait for Canon to get its thumb out of its ass, and release something decent and affordable. (unlikely!) Or swap over to Sony/Panasonic/BMD/Z Cam. If you need need NEED 4K then just rent a C200 / C300mk2 (or heck, buy a C500 mk1 and an external recorder, they're starting to become very cheap now!) Or even rent a BMD UMP / FS7 / FS5 / EVA1 / etc

I think you categorized them fairly well into the three rough groups. It might be argued the Oktava MK-012 straddles the middle between the first two groups, and perhaps the Neumann KM185 (and its variants) straddles the middle of the last two groups. It was the first thing I noticed when looking at naked people. I am inclined to agree. Perhaps pack along a Deity S Mic 2 as well. From a proportionality perspective..... if the only audio gear you're buying after the C200 is the MKH50 (plus the odd accessory for it) then you're waaaay out of whack! In terms of missallocating the budget. Unless you're only very rarely solo shouting? And usually shooting with a soundie?
-
It is significantly bigger than a Tascam DR10L though, which is the LAST thing you want with your bodypack recorder
-
Clearly I'm much better BEHIND the camera than in front of it. Total brain fade midway through my video. And I like to stick to my videos being one takes, no do-overs!
-
I'd rename those three categories instead as: Standard Pro Gear: Indie / Prosumer Gear: No Budget Gear: I'm still annoyed that I missed out on a KM185 a couple of years ago for US$400 ? I've heard the same as well.
-
FS5mk1 is already US$2K ish on eBay secondhand It is one of the factors which is putting me off buying a FS700, when a FS5 is only a little bit more.... Perhaps not $15K cameras, but tonnes and tonnes of shooters are buying cameras for around $10K ish or a bit less (like FS7/C300/C200/VaricamLT/EVA1/etc) and putting stills lenses on it.
-
The Nikon Z6 is a much more advanced camera than the X-T2 (a fair comparison to try and make might be X-T3 vs Z6??)
-
well dammnnnnn!!! That will lead to big price falls of secondhand FS7 cameras, which will tempt me once again to buy them! Sony is still there, and has been for a long time, the FS7 just can't be beat. But smart of Sony to bring out the next gen now before the FS7 truly becomes far too long in the tooth and gets finally overtaken. That is an interesting and logical theory. The FF cinema cameras won't be the end of the S35 cameras from Sony, they'll likely launch a FS7mk3 with a S35 sensor at an affordable price? One can only hope! (if you're a S35 fan) On the high end VENICE will smash the C500mk2, and on the budget end the FS7mk3 / FX9 will dominate instead of Canon. C500mk2 will find itself squeezed in between those two options, with no room left to breath.
-
I think for $199 to get any kind of quality audio out of a wireless kit is going to be your base level of expectations. And Rode is not a stamp of approval for quality, as they've made some solid low budget projects but they can certainly be a bit hit or miss with sometimes cost savings really showing. Just do it! Be polite and professional about it, and explain how it is for her benefit to fully capture all the emotion of her special day.
-
Gee thanks! But no, not really. I still work an awful lot in the low budget / indie tier of productions. Tomorrow's short film is an ultra low budget self funded short film, yet it will be shot on an ARRI AMIRA, and I'll be showing up with my so called "fancy" sound gear from Zaxcom/Sanken/etc (no DPA mics though, sorry) Many forum goers just need to set their sights a little higher.

He's at 56 subs now! 'fess up, who in this thread subbed? We can in the future all say how cool we are that we followed him back when he was unknown
