  1. Depends on the person, the JVC LS300 is still packed with features the others lack
  2. My big beefy Sirui monopod is a beast with my Sony PMW-F3 on it They're two different purposes. Just like a steadicam and gimbal are totally different.
  3. And those numbers vary a lot from shoot to shoot. Sometimes it is more like 75% the skills, 15% lighting, 5% lenses, 5% camera.
  4. I think @Jonesy Jones means that the stills part of a "hybrid" camera doesn't matter to a film production.
  5. This didn't happen just now either. Older cameras like the GH4 / 5Dmk3 / D750 / etc have all been very good. Heck even the old Panasonic GH2/GH1 are perfectly respectably good if you work to its capabailities! As the Zacuto Shootout showed. https://www.zacuto.com/revenge-of-the-great-camera-shootout-2012 Or the various films done with the Panasonic GH2: If you look broader than "hybrids" and say "sub $1K" then has been more than true since at least the BMPCC. (or "sub $3K", which is a common enough price for many DSLRs, then the original BMCC in 2012) Being spoiled for choice in 2018 with all our luxuries we can choose from the many amazing cameras which got released this year, doesn't change the broader fact we've had "good enough" for a long time now!
  6. ^ This! This. Too often I see comments like "I own a Panasonic GH4" should I buy an URSA Mini Pro or RED Raven or Canon C200 or or or or? When they're giving no context for their question whatsoever. Then when context does arrive... you realize they don't know at all what they're getting themselves into and should just stick with their GH4 and push themselves harder to get the most out of it! (like those folks who might only own the GH4 and a kit lens and think they should get a UMP next??)
  7. Interesting indeed Yup, this is why some people regard skin tonnes as being so very very important, in terms of how the camera renders it. Which brings up an interesting quirk about this test, the only skin tones this test ever had is his own. No one else was ever used as a model in the pics other than himself. If this test was done again then it would be an extremely good idea to also include some Caucasian, Asian, and Latino skin tones. At a minimum.
  8. There is countless tv shows or movies with multi million dollar budgets and I'll see quite severe rolling shutter in them on some specific certain shots. But so what? Almost nobody in the viewing audience but myself and a few other geeks will ever notice it.
  9. It is a great lens. I've shot with that on the BMPCC in only moonlight and been happy with it! (although a single LED panel is nice too, and I'd use it sometimes)
  10. Still got basically the same set up, been a bit lazy/busy and haven't finished the rest of my plans yet. So currently it basically is a double tier of drawers (this is a more or less a three part plastic set up: the frame + two drawers) tied down onto a hand trolley. A very simple set up indeed! But a good starting point. And I can use the trolley to carry around other things too attached to it: camping chair, gear bags, C stand, boom poles, sound mat, etc You can see the drawers I'm talking about here, but I went with the double height ones not the triple height ones in this video: I'm sure in five years or so I'll have more than one sound cart build, but for now this is it! Nope, but I'll keep an eye out for this now. If I had these attached to the cart then they wouldn't be quite so easy to access gear in. But yeah, I have one of those flat pack ones just for transporting around bits of camera gear rigging.
  11. From one perspective, then Nikon has the best diversity of lens with their deep and rich history of F mount lenses. Especially as some perform extremely well with Nikon's own adapter. It is only if a person insists upon "native" mount lenses then other brands pull ahead. AF: excellent on the Nikon ISO: has been praised on the Z6 Price: is only just now shipping, give it a few more months into the new year and we'll see some discounts IBIS: way ahead of Sony 10bit: Sony doesn't have this option at all Weather sealing / Pro Support / Color Science / etc: Nikon has the edge
  12. Not everyone.... 18mm is still a common starting point for many APS-C kit zooms. And many cheaper MFT kit zooms still start at 14mm :-/
  13. 4K doesn't look as sharp as 1080?? Oh Canon...... you never stop being you. The Panasonic GH2 is still a solid ultra low budget buy even in nearly 2019 I do like this though, I wish more kit lenses started at 15mm for APS-C
  14. Do remember all your past cameras you listed are quite bad ish in low light, with the GH4 being the best of the bunch you've owned in the past. Often people realize they need better lowlight then go into TOTAL OVERKILL MODE and get themselves an a7S, to the detriment of other areas. When even the Panason G85 will be better in lowlight than anything you've had before. Plus what lenses have you used in the past? As lens can make a MASSIVE difference for lowlight shooting. And I haven't even touched the subject of lighting yet.... If you loved the GH4 then you'll love the Panasonic G85 (and your wallet will thank you!). The Panasonic GH5S is great at stills... if you don't mind the 10 megapixel resolution! For some people this is a problem. But if you're just putting on social media and such, then this would be just fine.
  15. With your budget, and starting from scratch, then I wouldn't ever suggest anything more expensive than a X-T3 / BMPCC4K And ideally a Panasonic G85 or cheaper would be better for you. Tripod/lenses/audio/lighting/accessories/etc all add up a lot to the total cost of the gear. Even if you only get a minimal amount of each. Not so now the Nikon Z6 is out! (not unless you place an overly high priority on native mount lenses)
  16. If Panasonic had done something like Canon has with M vs RF mount, then I'd be very very worried. As APS-C and FF are too close together for both to survive, I predict that eventually Canon will kill off M mount. But MFT vs L mount is more like Fujifilm's X mount and Medium Format cameras, as APS-C and Medium Format are both far enough apart for two different mounts to coexist together. The same is true for 4/3" vs FF, they're far enough apart that both could still co-exist together. Nope! Plenty of wide angle options for MFT as well. The GH6 MFT will be cheaper and/or have even better specs.
  17. When rolling shutter is so fast that no average viewer ever notices it under normal usual shooting conditions, then can a global shutter camera ever be a "game changer"??
  18. Yup, which was nice. But totally different from the promised upgrade platform that the URSA body was meant to be. So I bet they won't with the UMP either.
  19. For many people the 24-105mm f4 is their "workhorse lens", which is F4 That first party is key. The type of people shooting with a camera will very heavily influence what we think a camera "looks like"
  20. Ahhhh.... I shall have to check out this in the settings of my iPad when I get home from the shoot. This is somewhat unfamiliar territory the settings on iPads for me, being a 100% Android user until the F8n forced me to buy an iPad.
  21. After what happened with URSA I wouldn't hold your breath
  22. I just used mic level for outputs, usual never doing more than sending to a single TX anyway
  23. The local rental store I've been to this week (actually, not just once, but twice for two separate productions) has not one but two EVA1 cameras in stock. They're certainly out there in use. That looks pretty cool, thanks for sharing
  24. You can still use it, but you won't be able to use the wide end of the zoom
