Likelihood Sony Will Give Us A New Codec Any Time Soon?
IronFilm replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
There are some very fast SD cards now. Look at the GH5 which can do 10bit 4K with ease, and they're not even taking full advantage of the latest SD cards. I said FS5/FS7, not F55 -
Compared to newer modern cameras like the FS7 or C300mk2 or UMP? The yes it kinda is. But of course for low budget fast turn around work, then the C100 is still a solid work horse. Horses for courses.

The SmallHD Focus and Aputure V-Screen VS-5 are both cheaper and have waveform monitoring. Am betting by the end of 2019 we'll start to see US$250ish monitors with waveform monitoring.

Likelihood Sony Will Give Us A New Codec Any Time Soon?
IronFilm replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
Am not saying I think Sony will do that, just it seems more likely to me than them inventing another new codec. -
For us filmmakers it does. Give us 10bit output.

Do you have a SLR Magic Rangefinder for sale?
-
"Except for the fact this camera makes you a cup of coffee in the morning and farts golden fairy dust, what else is interesting?" I dunno.... colors and great dynamic range seems like two really important things to me! No need to say "Except..." next to that.

Own an Orca OR30 myself, and sometimes it feels like overkill, but sometimes it feels a bit small and cramped too. Thus, it is the perfect sweet spot for me? I guess the OR30 isn't massively bigger than the OR28, but it is more expandable (with the wireless pouches you can add to the sides) and uses a metal frame for extra robustness. Another thought is just keep an eye on eBay, and other secondhand sources. You can likely buy the bag then at a big discounted. Is how I got my Orca bag and my Petrol one before that. For example, this is quite the bargain: https://www.ebay.com/itm/k-tek-kstgs-stingrey-small-audio-mixer-recorder-bag-READ-ENTIRE-DESCRIPTION/283177496597 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1398712-REG/porta_brace_ao_zoomf8s_silent_audio_organizer_bag.html That looks surprisingly decent! Ages and ages ago then Porta Brace was a major player in the audio bag market (my Tascam DR680 bag was a Porta Brace), but for years now they've lagged behind the innovation of the K-Tek and Orca brands. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1178100-REG/porta_brace_ar_z8_case_for_zoom.html For instance that bag! Ick, I'd never buy that for full price. However it seems with their latest bag they're now playing catch up. Good to see. https://www.portabrace.com/organizers/ao-zoomf8s.html However it is not even shipping yet, still is "pre order" status even on Porta Brace's own website.

Cinema5D has been so far off the mark in the past, why should we start to believe them now?

Arguably the Z6/Z7 beats the Sony FF. But at the very least, they're competitive against Sony.

Why the camera press need to grow a pair of balls
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
If it had been a smaller player than BBC then I bet one of two things would have happened, or both: 1) they'd only have got to interview a low end person, some Sony booth helper perhaps 2) the Sony guy would dodged the question then have cut the interview short and walked off (maybe he did already do this... it was a surprisingly small segment in that video clip? Would love to see the full interview!!) -
Likelihood Sony Will Give Us A New Codec Any Time Soon?
IronFilm replied to Mark Romero 2's topic in Cameras
Yes, if we're lucky then they're likely to just push down one of those codecs from the FS5/FS7 into a mirrorless camera, rather than invent a whole new codec to implement. -
Being able to load your own 3D LUTs at that price point is impressive. Just wish we'd see monitors at this price point with waveform monitoring as well.

Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Ultimate upside down twisted Canon trolling. -
No. But you can get them in MFT mount ? (and naturally to use a focal reducer from MFT to MFT is just nonsense talk) Also, you can get the Fujion MKH zoom pair in a FZ mount! Perfect match with my Sony PMW-F3. Sigh, if only.... one day. Because they haven't been? Sure, they've always been ahead of Canon! But that is Canon. However Sony has lagged behind Panasonic, and I feel it shows in how they give out features to their mirrorless cameras but leave just enough behind to protect their cinema cameras.

I don't seem to have seen the ikan mentioned in the same breath as the Tilta before, or have seen this ikan wireless follow focus on set beforehand? Which makes me wonder if it is a serious competitor to the new Titla at all. But who knows, maybe it is a hidden gem, and I'm curious to hear more about it. Hope Tilta reads this! And offers another firmware update, with 10% or even 5% (or less?! :-o ) as an option. I was worried with the Nucleus N being so much weaker than the Nucleus M that maybe the Nucleus N might not be good enough. But now hearing about how powerful the Nucleus M is, we have nothing to fear from the Nucleus N! ha. Rather it might be a blessing if the Nucleus N is relatively underpowered instead.
-
And a lot of time spent on set And time = $$$ , especially when you're using skilled professional craftsmen. Trying panning the camera back and forth on a long lens, in front of leafy trees on a windy day. That could impact at what point the drive cuts out.
-
The Tilta Nucleus M is the newest product to the market, and is getting rave reviews. So I'd go for the Tilta!
-
This year I have worked on many days of shoots (including an entire feature film with an ARRI AMIRA) in which I noticed the 1st AC is using a Titla Nucleus-M Certainly seems to have become very popular in the indie world! Am curious as to just how good will the Titla Nucleus-N be. Your marks would become utterly and completely useless.

""Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM."" C200 can't even output 10bit externally, otherwise that would solve the "middle codec" problem of the C200 for some people.
-
I suggest you buy more sound stuff.

If you're working from the sides of the stage, perhaps consider the Panasonic 42.5 f1.7? Depends on how much reach you need. Might go with some manual lenses, like a cheap Nikon 50mm f1.8? Another consideration is say a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 in Nikon F mount (or any of the many other mid range f2.8 zooms for DX) with a Viltrox focal reducer? I think they're the best Chinese focal reducers at the moment. (and of course, also just get a normal Nikon G adapter as well) https://www.ebay.com/itm/Viltrox-NF-M43X-Nikon-D-G-Mount-Lens-to-Micro-4-3-Panasonic-Adapter-Speedbooster/153113297914

Canon EOS R first impressions - INSANE split personality camera
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
An EF-S lens prevents 60fps?!?! Wow, just wow! As man, even though I thought I knew Canon, they still come up with new ways to surprise me in how they can cripple their cameras so as to keep on disappointing their (dwindling... hopefully? Otherwise they're suckers for abuse!) Canon fanboys. -
Nikon Z7 is at EOSHD HQ - better video than Sony?
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
That was indeed sadly a very short time ? -
What put you off specifically?
