Ah if only arguing with people on forums paid the bills, then I'd be a millionaire! ? https://www.4kshooters.net/2018/09/19/ibc-2018-blackmagic-design-raw-will-come-to-the-bmpcc4k-in-future-firmware-update-davinci-resolve-15-1-update/

If BMD opens this up for other cameras than just BMD's, then this could mean the end of 8bit for many projects hopefully

Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
IronFilm replied to Trek of Joy's topic in Cameras
Oh yeah, the 1D C A camera that was officially part of Canon's Cinema EOS series, so kinda half debatebly almost if it really was part of the pure stills line up? And besides, at that point in time it was so very prohibitively expensive that it could just be ignore by most of us mere mortals. -
OMG!!! That poor Hasselblad ?

Reversed could mean a real mind fuck for when you're trying to frame yourself and talk at the same time!

This quote sounds so much like Canon:

I agree, once you get the knack of Nikon's naming then it is very easy to follow along. Kinda true of Canon, but they're got a few silly things going on which Nikon doesn't do. Such as T3i vs 600D, why??? Except the Canon EOS R is over $2K
-
Maybe Canon too closely follows this principle, only putting in features they know know consumer will pay for (which is greatly overestimated by us forum goers) : http://firstround.com/review/its-price-before-product-period/ But if so, I'd expect Canon would more aggressively price their cameras lower? Well, I guess they do that with their Rebels! I have an awful lot of respect for what Matthew Allard does, and I love the Newsshooter website, but damn... it is so disappointing seeing him trying to defend Alan's clear mistakes even when presented with the evidence. (it was like Matthew didn't even read the comments before responding?! I dunno) Unfortunately years of expertise and accolades doesn't always automatically equal correctness or universal knowledge.

Uses a 2-Pin LEMO connection, which needs at least 12V I believe

Lowest price yet seen for the GH5S on Amazon/B&H/Adorama/etc, US$2K (well, $2,026.19 to be exact): https://www.amazon.com/Mirrorless-Sensitivity-Multi-Aspect-Megapixels-DC-GH5S/dp/B078J119BC/ I won't be buying, but it bodes well for the future of prices for secondhand buyers ? Buy a G80 before Christmas and then a cheap GH5S a year later?
-
Oh! He is the same guy as those light tests, I remember reading those, thought it was interesting too. But when it comes to the modern GH5S (and some other cameras) it seems he is lacking in his assessment.

Been reading some of their reports, at times the writer seems quite clueless. (a pencil pushing bureaucrat perhaps? Or at least someone outdated and behind the times) For instance: "The camera achieves HD Tier 1 because the sensor size, while smaller than the preferred 1” size, is greater than the minimum-acceptable ⅔” size." https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/tech/tech3335_s29.pdf And he seems to be the master of the understatement, this is what he said about the Panasonic GH5S: "The dynamic range is about 14.6 stops in HLG, a creditable performance" "Noise levels are acceptable." Yes, he regards the GH5S itself as "acceptable" in lowlight. And because he fucks up the math (he mistakenly believes the GH5S is upscaling its image to be able to do 4K) he says: "The camera cannot achieve Tier 1 or 2 for UHD broadcast or cinema because the sensor resolution is inadequate. However, the performance at UHD is probably adequate for use in productions provided it is not the prime camera."

Wow, I didn't think it was such a large percentage being cannibalized! You don't care if it does 10bit internal.... so long as it has 10bit external! Why not use a more mainstream NLE? Or must you edit it online? I reckon give it less than 10yrs and then your wallet will be able to afford it
-
If the a7Smk3 doesn't even have 10bit output, which even the old GH4 had and now Nikon/Fijifilm/Canon have as well (!!!), then I reckon Sony shouldn't even bother to release the a7Smk3. Except Sony solid Vegas to Magix. "Only works in Catalyst" instead? haha With all the other advances (10bit, 4K 60fps, waveforms, TC, etc) that the other stills cameras are doing, this seems like the only likely (as internal raw or 4K 120fps etc just isn't likely from Sony this generation) way that Sony could get substantially ahead of them with a video focused a7S successor. Do that, I could possibly even forgive Sony for staying with 8bit 4K 30fps

There was an announcement of 3.0 firmware and a sensor head extension for the Venice at IBC, the 30 second (!!) cache recording could be handy for doco filmmakers who are waiting for that perfect moment to develop in front of them: https://www.provideocoalition.com/sony-venice-3-0-firmware-extension-head-announced/ Useful videos as well:

I'd recommend syncing at the start, then handing over OMF/AAF to sound post after there is a picture lock.

Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
IronFilm replied to Trek of Joy's topic in Cameras
First to put 4K in a stills camera is of course what I meant, as naturally they're not going to be first to 8K either! As RED is already there, and a few others as well. -
For post: any mainstream NLE will have the option to sync by TC For during the shoot: the sound recordist jams (usually set to zero or TOD) all the boxes to his recorder (if using that as master, which I usually do) then distributes it to the AC to put on the cameras (under my supervision usually if it is the first time working with them). If I have a boom op I trust I might delegate the 2nd half of this job to them.

Sony PMW-F5 are going on eBay for under that now as well! And if a person is doing higher end work then I'd recommend that over a FS7. But if a person is asking you, to then ask random forum goers, is the FS7 really the right camera for them??? Perhaps the Sony X70 makes more sense! (yes, no 4K 60fps, but you're not going to get that in a camcorder without $$$$$$$$)
-
Ditto, is worse when it is even films you've worked on yourself. There are many cases like that for myself, I'll have recorded sound for some short film headed to festivals. Takes ages for them to get through post, then even longer to go round the festival circuit, until years later... it gets put up online and I'm able to watch and share it!

Panasonic announcing a full frame camera on Sept. 25???
IronFilm replied to Trek of Joy's topic in Cameras
Outside the bubble of online camera forums, I don't know anybody who has "abandoned" the GH5 for other camera brands. In fact I still know of people who even today in 2018 are buying the GH5, because it is still an extremely relevant and well priced camera. Was being first with 4K in the GH4 also a "silly desire"? Maybe Panasonic should have stuck with HD for longer, so they didn't have to push the other brands to compete with them. -
Short battery life brings me back to the old glory days of real filmmaking, when swapping the film mags on a camera every few minutes gave you those precious few moments to discuss between the director/DoP/actors to focus on what we really need to improve on for the next take. None of that rush rush rush which we have in the digital age which makes quality suffer. Swapping batteries every few minutes is just like swapping film mags! What has changed that made you 100% sure you won't get a Nikon Z6? I didn't make anything up. Like you said, I quoted him. And that was exactly my point, he mentions the downside but immediately glosses right over it.

Yes, I do wonder what was the highest ISO used in those shots. I'd love to see them try and do a super extreme example with the Z6 (or with a BMPCC4K/Terra4K/E2/GH5S/etc!), like this:
