I agree, the 35mm f1.8G is a killer feature in favor of the Nikon APS-C as the starter DSLR . As 35mm is the perfect general purpose prime lens as it is a "normal". Plus a 50mm to get later on still nice and cheap.

Nikon Z6 features 4K N-LOG, 10bit HDMI output and 120fps 1080p
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
With each passing page that gets added to a new topic, the probability of this approaches 1. How DARE YOU be on topic in a thread supposedly about Nikon Mirrorless!! btw, crazy that the ancient old (not even 4K!) Sony a6000 is positioned at #2 in between those too. (#4 = G7, #5 = a5100) The Sony a6000 is also at #9, #10, #13, #14, #16, #17, #18 & #20! I dearly hope Nikon brings out an affordable DX mirrorless camera. -
Wait... what? I thought Canon/Sony/Nikon are the top three in the world? Depends on if Nikon offers that option. It is possible when you select 1080 monitoring that the output might drop down to 8bit again. Who knows. We'll have to wait and see. Seems a waste to buy a Z7/Z6 and to only use it for 1080!

The cameras haven't even shipped yet. Let alone it be months after. Patience! Crazy, even the Nikon D3100 is on that list!

Batteries heat up. If you remove this heat source from a camera body then the whole body will be cooler, and thus it will be a longer time period until the processor overheats. So yes, the battery does have something to do with it! This is Sony mirrorless user experiences as well. Nope, the Ninja Star doesn't downscale from 4K

An additional point is that posting lab tests are not that helpful if they're not relevant. For instance tests of stills performance, when we're discussing video performance.

I quoted you directly above, then wrote my own statement below, so that with your quote side by side it was clear that was my words. For the point I was making that all sensor sizes have their own set of pros/cons worth discussing. (and of course any con falls under "disputing the merits of...").

"I don’t even want to be part of a conversation where the merits of medium format are in dispute. It is a pointless waste of time." Oh I dunno.... I think there are very legitimate reasons to not consider using medium format! Even if their prices dropped to a half, or even a quarter of what they are now.

It also means you don't have to worry about any record limits! ? Nice! That is a very very good feature. He also mentions that have timecode feature (but no details given :-/ ) That is VERY GOOD NEWS! -

For many photo pros this won't matter, if you're a studio shooter for instance you will be sending the pics on the fly to the client monitor anyway. It is just the pro shooters out in the field which will want the second slot. And yet, there are still lots of pros shooting with say a D7500 or the older Sonys which all only had a single card slot. Thus it is less of a deal breaker than some people make it out to be. Yes, we wish it had a second slot, even if just a teeny one for a Micro SD! (as even if just a back up to JPEGs is better than nothing) But still, it isn't the massive dealbreaker it is for many people that some make it out to be. It is just Sony fanboys grasping for straws in trying to talk down what Nikon has achieved ? And of course for us filmmakers on EOSHD, the lack of a 2nd slot matters even less. As none of us ever really use dual slots for video in stills cameras? (well, aside from a few exceptions I'm sure) -

I often wonder that too.... It is all about your connections, and who you know! Anyway, seems like there is an option to turn down mid range sharpening? I'm experiencing GAS so bad when watching the videos about the Z6! But yeah, no harm in waiting for secondhand bodies to appear. Plus as I don't really buy into the whole "bigger must be always better" argument, I'm also keen to wait and see what Nikon will do for DX mirrorless! Imagine a camera identical to the Z6 but with an APS-C sensor but for say US$1.2K? That would be dreamy. Same price as an a6500, but 10x better. (20x better if they give us a flip out screen!) Although, I'll keep an eye on eBay prices for D750/D7500/D500, I might possibly just give in and buy another DSLR instead. But no rush, sound gear purchases is burning up plenty of bags of cash of mine instead! Lectrosonics SR/SMQV/etc are bloody expensive. I agree, a "slim" battery grip (but doesn't even have a vertical grip! As it is a "slim" version) would be a handy innovation for many mirrorless shooters who just want a bit more time between battery swaps. Actually, this seems like something a third party supplier could innovate and supply? (if Nikon doesn't lock you out with a firmware update... gah) Imagine if you could buy slim battery body extensions ("body extensions" seems like a better name, than "grips" as it wouldn't even have a vertical grip) for say $75 a pop then you could happily buy say three of these to get you through a day. -
That is one big lens! :-o You really realize how gigantic it is when mounted on a camera and next to other lenses: And it seems Nikon will quickly by the end of next year have filled out the core zoom and primes most shooters would want to see them starting out with: So only three lenses for now, but Nikon will quickly catch up!

I wonder how the video from the P4 Pro and the Mavic 2 Pro would compare.

Is it really coming?! The LX100 II?! August 23?!

Even the G80 was a shift up in pricing from what you'd had with the G3/G5/G6/G7 of the past. -

Well, there is no mic jack, yet again! So that pretty much automatically kills it as a consideration for a lot of increasingly frustrated people, including myself. I just want a better than cellphone camera that is nice and compact, but with a mic input so I can do quick and dirty vlog! None of the Sony RX100 have this, was a perfect chance for Panasonic to leap in and steal a niche for themselves! Especially if its screen had also flipped out. -

Very impressed with that wireless zoom with the adapted lens while letting the camera handle autofocus on the adapted lens! -
Stills cameras will never take over the high end cinema market. The gap in needs is just too vast. However the stills cameras do apply an awful lot of pressure on the low end video market, and even the mid range. Today a $10K (such as a C300mk2) video camera are thought of as mid range, when if you'd turn back the clock a while that would have been a low end professional video camera. They're becoming a lot more affordable!

IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Gee, I hope whoever they got to showcase N-Log never is giving that job again.... :-/ Come on Nikon, you can show off your new tech better than this! -
For sure! If a shoot demand DoF that stretches to inifinity and beyond (and just needs a fixed wide angle lens), then indeed I'd seriously consider the latest smartphone for that shoot. However that is an as unlikely demand as needing to shoot W.O.F. all the time.

Noooo! Yay! Well "yay" relatively speaking compared to the rumors before it would something like a 15minute limit wtf Not the worst limitation in the world, perhaps they want to limit people from playing with N-log in only 8bit Seems an odd example to give when they've left in all those shots with blown highlights I expect we'll very soon see the Veydra, SLR Magics, and Fujinons coming out for the Z Mount. But maybe they might wait for the DX Mirrorless to come out, but probably not. -
I buy cameras for video performance first. Nearly all my filmmaking friends I have in RL take the same attitude too. Why? Because I feel stills performance reached the "good enough" level long long ago. Video is the last hurdle left to fly over, thus it is better to focus on that first when choosing a camera. Hmmm... I wonder if we're misreading each other here? Of course everyone has their first preferences etc (IBIS/TC/NDs/10bit/HFR/AF/Waveforms/etc) I was just making the case for why for a fairly large group of shooters the "benefits" of vistavision/FF shooting is not as large(ha!) as the general internet forum buzz seems to think it is. Because there are downsides too

Glad you've now joined my team at last, and realized it is less the sensor size but the results we should look at of specific cameras. But a few specific points on this comparison: 1) is GH5 vs a7III what we want to do? I'd suggest GH5S vs a7III 2) you're accepting that in this specific example MFT and FF are equivalent performance. (at least when it comes to the practical experience of shooting at the same DoF) 3) you're comparing stills performance, I'm only discussing video performance, so this is rife with problems to be thinking only about the stills performance and trying to apply it to something completely else
