https://www.anandtech.com/show/13249/nvidia-announces-geforce-rtx-20-series-rtx-2080-ti-2080-2070 Way back in the early 2000's I remember doing basic ray tracing with my personal PC, it was very very very very very slooooow. Is cool there are now mainstream consumer cards which are specifically targeted to doing this, & in real time! Astonishing. https://thenextweb.com/artificial-intelligence/2018/08/20/nvidia-reveals-its-rtx-graphics-cards-with-game-changing-ray-tracing-tech/ https://venturebeat.com/2018/08/20/nvidia-unveils-geforce-rtx-graphics-chips-for-real-time-ray-tracing-games/ But will it play Crysis?

Not just folks who still use the C100 as their main camera, but there are lots of people I know with say a FS700/C300mk2/UMP/REDs/etc who still bring out their C100 on a semi regular basis for their cheaper/smaller jobs such as the OP mostly does.
-
I'm no Canon fanboy and even I can see it would be a good match for his needs :-P However it is worth giving a second look at the other options (FS5/FS7/LS300/UMP/etc) before pulling the trigger on the final decision of buying a C100/C300.
-
Consider a Sony FS5 or a secondhand FS7, they'll be 4K for when you do need it in the future and sell for well under $7K. Another thought is the C300mk1 which goes for very cheap secondhand as well, as you're happy to give up 4K, and you gain a lot of extra features that the C100 lacks. Although those might not matter so much to you as it sounds you just do a lot as a solo run and gun guy. Those are all stills cameras. For a C series camera than yes sub $2K is very cheap indeed! And I'm seeing ones for US$1.5K with a buy it now price, and I'm sure you can find prices much lower than that BIN with a little patience.
-
If you can live without 4K / 10bit / 60fps / TC / SDI / etc (which it sounds like maybe you can) then get the C100mk1 DPAF for dirt dirt cheap secondhand, "if" something else better comes along in the future you can sell the camera without much of a loss.
-
That makes no sense at all when they're around the same price and the Sony absolutely is a better performer.

Ah yes, "ditch" is common slang for the Tasman Sea. We also might refer to Australia as our "West Island".
-
Yes, but I'm not recommending that people start out with their first wireless be something which is over 8 times more expensive than a RodeLink. Not at all, I recommend instead better products (Sony UWP-D11) which are still in the same general price bracket.

I know that Zoom has been around for a long long time. But companies, like people, do change over time. And it would be wrong to assume the Zoom of today (with their F8n, and F8/F4) is the same as the Zoom of years ago.
-
Even Sony fans think that! ha Interesting too that Panasonic rates by far the lowest, but from my experience I reckon that does make sense. Wish a few more brands were included such as Olympus, Leica and Pentax.

Ah yes, I know of Andy Parnell, he is an aussie soundie from across the ditch. You might notice most of those pics on his pinterest originate from jwsoundgroup They have their very extensive gallery of sound carts: https://jwsound.smugmug.com/Gallerysoundcarts/i-NFtfZsx Plus many more images scattered across the forum: http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/forum/22-images-of-interest/ http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/forum/31-do-it-yourself/

Once you've purchased the RX then it is no longer "a pretty damn good price" like you said, which was my point. If you've never used a Zoom F series recorder on a production then you really shouldn't judge.

Right angle connectors (be it lemo, hirose, or whatever) has been the theme of my week. Have it when I don't want it, don't have it when I want it. The start of my adventures with right angle connectors began a week ago: My other updates about my sound cart build: Been busy on other projects this week as well:

EVA1 vs Terra 4k or Mavo vs FS5 II - decisions!
IronFilm replied to Oliver Daniel's topic in Cameras
Fingers crossed for an URSA Micro Pro! I'm constantly tempted to buy one of those cheap Chinese versions -
Having the "smaller" sensor will mean you'll have an easier job nailing manual focus than with the oversized a7 sensor. And on the topic of the "smaller" sensor: it actually is closer to the traditional Super 35mm size than the vistavision a7 sensor is.
-
That is for ONLY the transmitter. Utterly useless by itself. (thus not a good price for it at all) And I've said it many times, and I'll say it again: I don't like the RodeLink Filmmakers Kit.

Well, I managed to figure out the WiFi password, by not going first to the main screen but instead by going straight to the http://192.168.1.168/WifiSetE.html page directly (after starting again from scratch by removing the battery then plugging it back in again beforehand): I'm so pissed, the password is indeed "12345678" like I remembered! So why haven't I been able to connect to the WiFi network before? I just keep on getting told "Wrong Password". And of course, just like before, as soon as I try to then navigate on to the next page from here, then everything seems to crash and stop working:
-
Been a bit side tracked with other things so haven't really put the time in to get this to work. Because every time I try, it seems like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall. For instance I might turn it on, plug in the LAN cable and be able to access http://192.168.1.168/ But then if I plug in the HDMI cable I can't, so I unplug the HDMI cable, there is only the LAN cable now plugged in. And now suddenly I can't access http://192.168.1.168/ ???? WHY??? It makes utterly no sense at all to me sometimes what is going on here. Or like now, I can't see the WiFi at all from my iPod Touch to even attempt to connect, where did it disappear to and why? I might just copy and past stuff here, so that I remember what they are. However I just now got this: As I wanted to look up what is the WiFi password by default. However I couldn't.... this has been pretty "normal" behavior I have experienced, that I'd maybe maybe if I'm lucky be able to access the main page and then perhaps one more... before the whole stack of cards comes crashing down, and then I can't access anything at all :-/

Sony doesn't have the years of experience that Nikon has, it took a while for Sony to figure it out? I reckon Nikon has a better chance to hit the ground running, and be able to build off both their own photography experience and also the years of watching the mirrorless market develop with what does/doesn't work. (without first stumbling and making the early mirrorless mistakes that others did?)

Because you're moving into different areas, or because you're going into semi-retirement? Pros are targeted because: 1) test bed for high end features which later on trickle down to consumers 2) margins are higher on pro gear than on consumer gear 3)because they're trophies for brands, which is good marketing to consumers, "use the camera they use at the Olympics"

Trying to view all purchases through the lens of a business decision helps to keep mildly in check my wildly out of control G.A.S. Interesting, I'd never thought of this consequence of press photographers being laid off (replaced by agencies) until you brought it up.

Samsung eying return to camera market as Galaxy smartphone shipments fall
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
The answer to declining smartphone sales is to get into another even smaller market which is showing even more signs of declining overall? I dunno how the math of that stacks up. -
Where did you find that pic of me?

I'm not a big fan of the wolfcrow website, but still I'd never recommend banning it. And 43rumors is worthwhile as they're often enough the original source for published rumors, and over here we of course talk a lot about new MFT cameras!
