True true True! I was thinking I'd only use the iPad for stationary/cart situations. And use the iPod Touch most of the time in the bag, but that is a good point.

What did you need to press? I found the DR680 *required* much more button mashing. And yes the F4 does have bigger knobs than the F8, but practically speaking I feel it doesn't make a huge difference as you're never going to be adjusting the gain during a take itself if you're booming as well! (& certainly not with a DR680! Which is even harder to do so) Even back when my Sound Devices 552 was my daily driver I still would only super rarely be adjusting during a take while booming (& if I was using a 552 today I'd be doing it even less often than then, as I can predictively guesstimate the appropriate levels for a scene better now then I could before)

I tend to follow USA pricing more closely, and we've already seen the F8 go on sale for cheaper than the F4 launch price!! Never used an Edirol/Roland (but looked at them a lot, the double stacked design of their knobs looks like a nice design touch), probably if I'd started out in this just a couple or so few more years earlier then I very likely would have (in hindsight, I wonder if I should have got a Roland instead of the Tascam DR680mk1? I do remember investigating Roland a lot with their options, perhaps I went with the DR680mk1 because it was cheaper. Also I already had had a lot of positive experiences with the Tascam brand, as I'd started with a DR60Dmk1 and used a DR70D on a feature). Say something like the Roland R4 Pro would have been very nice back then! (In a number of ways the R4 Pro is still even more advanced than the F8n, such as viewing waveforms and having AES) Pity we haven't seen anything recently from Edirol/Roland as they were the leaders of their time in the low/mid range market. Kinda like Zoom is doing now?

I have a healthy degree of skepticism that we'll see a GH6 this year, or even an a7Smk3
-
Hope not, that would suck.

Just doing a massive spending splurge tonight it seems, purchased not just the F8n, but also an iPod Touch and iPad Mini as well to use with the F8n's app, and.... finally got around to pulling the trigger on buying this wireless video transmitter! Is paid for, now all I need to do is wait a couple of months for it to get from China to NZ!

Unless you're specifically focused on recording say ambient nature sounds, as that is a very big part of your video creations, then I'd ask why both to go overboard? Save your money. Might be getting only worse with the new tariffs coming in.... !! Why limit yourself not being able to do timecode? If not now, in the future? And then once you are using timecode, you're limited to only recording four channels with the MixPre6, which would seem to be too little for your line of work? I'd say go for the F8n for your needs, or a secondhand F8/F4 if the budget is very tight. Really??? I moved from the DR680mk1 to the F4 and found it a massive world of a difference in leaping forward with better ergonomics and being straightforward to use. (and this would apply in general to the F8 as well)

Not worth it for 4K 60fps and barely worth it for on speed 4K, when you consider the hassle/cost of an external recorder.
-
F8 and F4 are the same in that area. The F8n headphone output is improved though. What do you need the NT-SF1 for? The F4/F8 are still very small recorders by pro recorders standards. Do you really need to go even smaller? Are you carrying everything all by yourself for hundreds of miles? :-/ It is kinda strange that MixPre recorders fall behind in design/ergonomics vs the Zoom F series, even though Sound Devices has decades more of specialized experience in this niche. Maybe they pushed too hard to make the MixPre series be miniaturized / cut costs / crippled / etc & lost sight of the bigger picture.

Oh interesting, at B&H they've now switched it back to "pre-order" status, which is kinda odd as others have got a shipping notification from B&H and when my order was placed through they had them all in stock. I guess their stock must have sold out very quickly! Who else has ordered a F8n? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1411499-REG/zoom_zf8n_zoom_f8n_multi_track_recorder.html

The Zoom F4 is the cheapest way to do this. Won't be happening this year, if it even ever happens. I'd only give it max odds of 50/50 that it would happen in 2019, and even then only in the 2nd half of the year.

F2? Think faster! 28mm f1.4 ? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1190732-REG/zeiss_otus_28mm_f_1_4_zf_2.html Although if full frame, I'd rather pick 35mm if I'm stuck with only one focal length. But if S35 then 24mm or maybe 28mm would be my sweet spot if I must live with only one focal length.

If this is how bad Panasonic is when they "fail" what will happen when they succeed? :-o
-
Sounds like Gotham Sound has only got the one dealer demo model at the moment, but more should be coming into stock soon: For roughly the same ish price the Zoom F8n instead with its better thought out design and all its extra features/capabilities seems like a no brainer choice to me. Unless you really really want the small size portability of the MixPre3/MixPre6, or their HDMI trigger.

Don't use a full frame camera, then your lenses will be lighter and compact. If it is size that is the limitation, rather than the number of lenses, then why not bring say two primes instead of one zoom? As the size/weight might be the same. Or four pancake lenses instead of two primes! Although you'd struggle to find four worthwhile pancake lenses all for the same mount system? I suppose there is the Pentax 21 / 40 / 70mm lenses which would be a nice combo, if only you could say get next a 16mm pancake that would be a complete set! Although personally I'd just prefer to have a lens like the Samsung 16-50mm f2-2.8 if I had to have only one lens.

They could never have done that. Would you have rather they never released the BMPCC4K? Of course not, that is a silly proposal! We can be very happy with what the BMPCC4K is rather than attacking it.
-
I wouldn't agree, I'd just say it hasn't been put in capable hands yet. ` Ditto. I do not see that Z Cam has a terrible track record (certainly not vs its main competition). It was half price sale of the BMPCC for $500, is when I purchased my BMPCC. And even secondhand prices now today in 2018 are still higher than that brand new price I paid for my BMPCC!! Maybe finally with the BMPCC4K launch we'll see secondhand BMPCC prices full under $500 on eBay, all these years later. BMD has never ever done this for any other camera. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for that to happen for the BMPCC4K.
-
That is a solid idea, why should BMD get its own forum but not the others? Rename this subforum from "BMD" to "raw"! And a "raw cameras forum" seems like a specialized niche which also isn't "too small" or "too broad".
-
Set up two cameras next to each that are focused at two different points in the scene. "Auto" focus solved! ?

http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr/eng/news/kofic_news.jsp?mode=VIEW&seq=1763&blbdComCd=601007 "50% lower" is a broad statement, 50% lower than who exactly? If it is 50% lower than the current cheapest anamorphic lenses then this is exciting, but if it is 50% off $50K well maybe not so much.....
-
This probably makes more sense to go in the direction of than 360VR for a proper immersive experience for a whole crowd to enjoy. Wonder what the workflow is for it, probably a big lack of standardizations and market penetration at the moment.

Anyone here using FCPX for 360? Stuck with using 360 patch
IronFilm replied to manueldomes's topic in Cameras
I've never used FCPX (so no idea what is their patch effect), but just google "nadir" tonnes of discussions about how to deal with it. (taking a pic/logo then pasting over is the common method) -
I've noticed some people have modded their LED lights to be quieter, if you might want to consider that as an option
-
A half priced C200 is still way over double the price of a BMPCC4K!!

How to know when your audio is really clipping?
IronFilm replied to Color Philospher's topic in Cameras
That is a very short clip, but what in particular are you finding the most obnoxious about it?
