What is music's equilvalent to "4K is the best!"
IronFilm replied to AaronChicago's topic in Cameras
Renting vs owning is an entire big debate of its own. I feel both renting and owning each have their place, and I do a bit of both. (welllll.... much more owning than renting) -
Buy them from Fivrr instead, they're cheaper, you'll save enough money to use Adobe instead.

It is not just that a dumb adapter gives you more focal length options, but also it is important to always have back ups for when something fails, and this is a very cheap way to keep your ass covered. (it doesn't even have to be an outright failure that might encourage you not to use the focal reducer, maybe the glass in it is creating flaring you don't want) Same here, I like buying secondhand stuff from Adorama / B&H as they have a generous rating system I can trust.

Zoom F8n is now available and in stock at B&H, I'm ordering it right away: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1411499-REG/zoom_zf8n_zoom_f8n_multi_track_recorder.html

A dumb adapter costs next to nothing and is sometimes very useful to own as well so i highly recommend buying one as well.

Ah, good point about the lower bit rate for slow motion. However a counter argument could be made that slow motion is very light hungry (due to needing a faster shutter speed) and as the newer Panasonic is a bit better in lowlights that the overall difference in many practical scenarios between the G85 and the GH4 slow motion might not be so great after all. True that! For overall Ergonomics of everything it is Panasonic mirrorless wins, but this isn't anything you can easily just see from a spec sheet.

What is music's equilvalent to "4K is the best!"

Is that a good analogy though? Seeing as we often go higher than 4.0 now Also 4K is in this discussion about the capture tech not the delivery format. -

Yup, due to the nature of audio vs video computing demands, the progressing edge of technology hit the limits of human abilities (to hear/see a difference) for audio long long long before that happened in the video world (it is only just now starting to happen in the obtainable mid range cameras, & arguably has already happened for the high end). Yes, I know that, but still isn't applicable for a person who wants to record 4K *today*. And like I said, it still has limitations that doesn't exist in some other sub $3K 1080 cameras. So while I'm very sure the BMPCC will be a great camera it isn't the perfect answer for everything -

A camera that doesn't (yet) exist and still will mean a compromise in a few of the areas. I can understand why not everyone wants to shoot in 4K, especially if the budget from the client isn't there. -

Sure, if you just want "4K" and don't care about the compromises then they're dirt cheap. But what if you want one or more of raw, ProRes, high FPS, ND filters, timecode, DPAF, SDI, etc then you'll have to pay a pretty penny for the premium of 4K vs a very affordable 1080 version instead. On both points, nailed it -

Arguably a case can be made for sometimes recording in 96KHz. And I would not want to ever buy a recorder that can't do 96KHz (one of the reasons why I wouldn't buy a Sound Devices 664). Say something more ridiculous like 32bit 192KHz! ? -
A 35mm is always a 35mm lens, no matter what camera you ever put it on. People keep on forgetting this fundamental fact. What people tend to be interested about however is FoV equivalence, and yeah a 35mm on a BMPCC4K would be slightly wider FoV than a 70mm on say a 5D or D800

Over on the E2 Facebook group it is mentioned that Z Cam also is working on a global shutter camera as well
-
This is a new recent review of the Z Cam E1, and he is quite positive about it:

Unless you are going to use the GH4 with an external recorder (but why? Would be cheaper to skip the external recorder and buy a GH5) then I'd go for the G85 (wellllll.. the GH4's 96fps is another reason, but you get a heavy hit in quality when going from 60fps to 96fps) Can't you by hand enter in the focal length into the Sony camera? Like you can with Panasonics A problem with cheaper cameras is often they don't get as much talent applied to them (as the top notch guys buy more expensive cameras), thus very often in demos of cheap cameras you don't see their full capabilities displayed.

Do it, shooting with film is the indie hipster thing to do, the brides will flock to you.
-
What phone has a near on S35 sensor with interchangeable lenses and 10Bit and 4K 120fps?
-
Z Cam E2 is probably the way to go if a person wants 120fps (@4K too!!) on a low low budget. (Or the NX1? Or GH5/GH5S?)
-
It isn't hard to see how the E2 could be viewed as a premium camera relative to the BMPCC4K for some people's needs and worth the premium

I've done countless weddings without either of those. I also find it very hard to use the EVF on the a5100 ? I reckon my 18-105 is a great run and gun lens. Only probably is if you're using it on a much older camera such as the FS700 raw will lack the in camera optical correction that say a FS5 has. There is also the 18-110 which is a better lens but much much more expensive!
-
Too late, I've ordered the A5!

Guess I'm a cheap bastard I suppose, thus I struggle to understand why a person would drop the cost of a C200 kit (remember once you've rounded out your filmmaking kit then the C200 is but a drop in the bucket of your total costs!) just for a hobby. If a person isn't working at it full time (thus they're spending 40hrs+/week working at sequeezing the most out of every shoot to get the best results for their clients because this is their business, vs a hobbyist who simply doesn't get that opportunity because they're only getting to do a full on shoot a few times a month or less. Thus they'll hit the wall of "diminishing returns" a lot earlier than the professional does), then it is highly likely they can get pretty similar results from a camera for a third of the price. Yeah, I had a meeting with an amateur director earlier this week and he was telling me that a while ago he spent $10K on a drone!! But even worse, never flew anything more than a GoPro on it because he didn't want to spend the extra money on top of that for a proper gimbal to carry a DSLR! (wtf... so why even spend that much on a drone if you're only going to fly a GoPro on it?? Oh, and then this year he sold his drone for around $2K ish as that is all it is now worth for. Depreciation, as the forward marching progress of drone tech continues)

Unless you go Canon you're likely to find yourself disappointed. (and if you do go Canon.... you'll find yourself disappointed anyway! But for different reasons) Newer Nikons (such as a D500 or D750 etc) have fixed this. (and I find it only a minor nuisance on my D5200 anyway) Being "forced" to always shoot in 4K (without the option for good 1080) is quite unappealing to me. (plus there are the overheating issues with the a6300.... and even some a6500 as well) One word: Monopod (it is a "no rig" approach that allows you run and gun around at events at a fast pace, if that is what you prefer, a monopod is my preferred weapon of choice for weddings)

Really? I feel there are heaps and heaps of tablet options! https://techtablets.com I'm looking for a combo stand for my recent 2K fresnel acquisition and I even self described myself as "a cheap bastard" in a local Facebook post when calling out for leads on a combo purchase. As I don't want to be buying a brand spanking new Avenger's combo! :-P Nah, going for a secondhand Kupo combo stand instead, although I was hoping to go even cheaper! I'd been browsing Aliexpress in the hopes of sourcing a cheap combo stand like I had for my C stand a few years back. Director's monitor? Go bigger! ? As I usually always see them on sets as being even larger than 10", often quite substantially so.
