It is not line level. It is mic level No. Yes

I'm certainly not using my cellphone for "real" filmmaking, but I use most of the time for my youtube vlog channel, because I'm lazy and it "is there" always at all times.

If the D5500 is so very bad then turn up the RX output and turn down the D5500

Wow, I just found out that the Zoom F8 made up TWENTY FIVE PERCENT of Zoom's sales! :-o Good grief, no wonder they followed it up with an F4 and now a F8n! That must be a tonne of F8 recorders that they sold over the years. Zillions of them.
-
Sweet news for "F8 original" owners, the F8n app will work with the F8 as well! (hopefully this mean app bug fixes, as it has been a long time since the iOS app had an updated! Plus general usability improvements) "The F8 will be compatible with the F8n app which will include some updates!" Follow the link for the original source info from Zoom themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtIfSGcm4fk&lc=z22div4yopvwvlyoc04t1aokg4stwhpuyygordywqnhdbk0h00410.1528212173721520

Wish they'd gone for a shorter zoom range and faster F stop like the earlier models. And STILL no mic input. Sigh. The RX100 line up would be so perfect as a vlog machine if only it had a mic input to go with a flip up screen

In response to people complaining that their original F8 doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the F8n and asking if their F8 will get updated to this as well (it might? But I wouldn't hold your breath), I wrote up this somewhat lengthy response: he F8 original has had three years of excellent support from Zoom in updating it. I think that is perfectly reasonable, better than that even! Plus there is the possibility the F8n has a more powerful processor in it than the F8?? So maybe the F8 is not even physically capable of this? Currently the F8 is at v4.10, that is a *lot* of updates! Here a few of the highlights: v2.0: https://www.learnlightandsound.com/blog/2015/12/27/zoom-f8-audio-recorder-firmware-v2-0 Sound reports Trim knobs can be used as faders False take folder Scene number advancement Change previously recorded track names Show track names on level meter screen PFL solos tracks during playback Shortcuts Those are some big BIG UPDATES there! And that isn't even all of it from the v2.0 firmware update. v3.0: https://www.zoom-na.com/news/f8-firmware-update-v300 Monitoring input signals of specific tracks without recording Backing up / loading saved settings. Adding a TONNE of extra functionality to be used with the new FRC-8 and a keyboard. Again, another big BIG update. v4.0: Extensive ambisonics support!!!! wow https://www.zoom-na.com/news/firmware-update-zoom-f8-firmware-40-recording-360-degree-audio Another big big update. And this is not even counting the many smaller updates between the big updates, which further improved the F8 during its lifetime. I feel buyers of the F8 when it came out have been served very very well by Zoom, and I can only hope I get a similar series of updates during the lifetime of the Zoom F8n! :-o I wonder what the future holds for the F8n?

It seems to me like this battery compartment design is worse than before? As this is completely impractical to swap batteries in and out when you've got the recorder in your bag. At least when the battery pack is on the bottom, then most bags have easy access to that. Also by using a battery tray, it is super fast to swap in and out batteries! (if you carry around a spare full battery tray, like I do as a back up)

Yes! Although could work with many more than just the F4. And all the "magic" that needs to be done is to open up both together, and close both together. Easy. And package it up in a nice little box which is robust, and looks well and works well. I should probably give this a test go myself. Would be a nice addition. (why on earth this hasn't been made already I have no idea, an aversion to external TC?!)
-
Well first you'd feed into this magic black box as inputs the the outputs from the recorder (at least two inputs would be a reasonable minimum to support). Then from here there are a few approaches as to how to accomplish the goal of starting/stopping recording, the simplest approach by far (but needing an external timecode generator) would be to simply pass through an external timecode generator to the recorder's TC input. Thus when the big red record button on the magic black box is hit this would pass the TC to the recorder (automatically starting it, if it is set to Ext TC) and also in the process open up the audio outputs flowing out (to say the comteks for instance). Easy.
-
You'd certainly find buyers at that price point, but only a very very very small pool. A more interesting project to think about would be an "auto mute" device for outputs from a recorder. Many more people would be keen on that!

Have been reading the manual, and this confirms the F8n can supply power to the FRC-8: https://www.zoom-na.com/sites/default/files/products/downloads/pdfs/E_F8n.pdf Which is nice, as the F4 could do this but the original F8 could not.
-
Interestingly, I see that Zoom is also launching a new PCF-8n bag alongside the new F8n as well. This is a good thing, as I feel the original F8 bag was a flawed product, that even the F4 bag was an improvement upon. (but even the F4 bag wasn't perfect, and is why I upgraded from it) You can see a hint of what the new bag is in this pic here (for instance that zipper and velcro to split the two segments apart is new):

Who will be pre ordering this? I will!

Price Drop: Gotham Sound (in the video comments) has stated that the launch price will be US$999! :-o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBTjvQzvzB4&lc=z22div4yopvwvlyoc04t1aokgoyeq0kktb4ur5s3v5rabk0h00410.1528118314039355 Absolutely! But the price for it would have to be extremely low, due to how low priced the F4 is itself, otherwise I don't think you'd find too many F4 owners pouncing on it.
-
But what if you want to use it without the app? Not everyone has an iOS device. And even if you do, maybe you don't want yet another battery that you need to babysit during the shoot? Plus then again there is the other issue of how very outdated their iOS app is, which doesn't always play so nice. Thus my point that having a keyboard hooked up direct to the recorder (like is commonly possible with many other higher end recorders) would be a good option to have. But yes, what you suggested is another viable alternative to consider as an option for some people.

I wrote a very long list (my longest blog post ever!) of things I'd like to see (or dream of seeing... some might be unrealistic!) in the new upcoming Zoom F8n: http://ironfilm.co.nz/what-id-like-to-see-in-the-new-zoom-f8n/ Waaaay too long list to list it all again here, but a few random points selected: Audio waveforms Metadata edit/shortcut via the PFL key Linked safety track (thus as you adjust gain on the main track, the safety does this automatically as well) Show the diff of external vs internal TC when compared together An updated Zoom EXH-6 with locking XLR connections (and the F8n being able to use the Zoom EXH-6 to record 10 channels in total, rather than lose tracks 1/2 to it). Integration with Timecode Systems :wave Able to use a USB keyboard without needing the Zoom FRC-8 as all at the same time, or even better, use bluetooth keyboards? Automatic clearing of peak indicators (so I don't need to do this myself after every slating). B format decoding for the new Rode NT-SF1

I think they've been running this for quite a while already?

Ah I'm referring to the SLR Magic 8mm f/4 Lens which got lost by NZ Post :-/ I still have a hugely massive shotgun comparison video which I shot that I need to edit own properly to upload to my channel. Think it was half a dozen or so I compared. ME66 vs CS3e vs 416 vs something else I forgot etc vs C393 (threw in one hyper there) Will be a while yet until I do anything similar for all the hypercardiods I own. (which is starting to be a rather scary number... maybe eight or more)

I've worked on two feature films now which had pretty non-existent lighting gear but was shot with a RED ONE. (even a RED ONE M!! :-o ) Also when the BMPCC came out there was Scarlet and Epic out as well, this was quite a while after the RED ONE launch.
-
Yeah, be careful not to put the filming before the moment itself! I casually filmed my brother's wedding yesterday, and I had to sometimes quite consciously *NOT* be focused on the filming itself. Rather instead just be in the moment of enjoying and soaking in what is happening. Who cares if the framing or focus is a bit off? Never mind. I'm not there for the filming, I'm there for the wedding itself! :-)
-
Does this include audio and lighting gear too? Are you going to need multiple cameras? Sounds like it. Quite arguably you shouldn't get getting a GH5S, but with that small budget something cheaper instead like say a Panasonic G80. Or maybe even say a secondhand G7

Did a video recently with the guy from White Point at a trade show in New Zealand, and he let slip they've got a focal reducer coming :-P

My solution to editing procrastination is don't edit! Seriously, you can painfully tell this is true from my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/SoundSpeeding

The courier marked it off as "delivered" at my local supermarket (which is where I collect my parcels from), but it was never there :-/ I think one of the new boxes I picked up today has the Audix in it! I have a tonne of new unboxing videos to "edit" for my YouTube channel.
