To sum it up: "risk minimization". When you're spending millions on a movie (or tens and tens of thousands on a 30 second ad spot), then you don't want to take unnecessary risks. You go with the tried and proven.

How terribly bad is the audio input with the E1? Good enough for casual vlogging? I have *extremely low* standards when it comes to my vlog (although perhaps still higher than some! :-P ): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCniNTuAtkFiSCQNfIaw9SJw But not absolute sh*t for audio is important for me if I'm to use the E1 for my vlogs (at the moment when filming myself I either use my BMPCC or my Samsung J2, which doesn't even have FHD!).
-
Highly HIGHLY doubt it was used with an external recorder. Because not worth it, and defeats the purpose of using a GH2.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1203955-REG/z_camera_e1cam3a701_e1_mini_4k_video.html Having a chuckle how over under the specs tab at B&H for *all* of the spec listings it says: "Not Specified by Manufacturer" So have had to go over to their website to see the specs properly: http://www.z-cam.com/e1/ This one fascinates me the most: 1280x720 @50fps/60fps/240fps Hmmm...... 240fps HD? (ok not FHD though!) Very nice! (for the price) Can't find any info about bitrates for the E1, is it still limited to 60Mps at 4K??? Or has that been fixed with a firmware update? How about at FHD/HD, what bitrate is it?

Getting a mic closer will make a bigger difference than anything else! (except: having a good shooting location! Which is quiet) Now if you don't have anyone who can hold the boom for you, then wireless lavs are unfortunately your only option. But anything under UWP-D11 / G3 is junk, so if you don't have money for those... get this: https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/26279-crazy-deal-on-tascam-dr10l-only-us139-at-bh-for-the-next-few-hours/

Am so tempted to get it just so I can say I "have a GH4"! :-P Quite sad really how high the used prices are for a BMPCC, when I purchased mine brand new for $500 If new prices had stayed being available at that price point, then I'm sure now today around two and a half years ish later, we'd see used BMPCC for sub $300 or yes even as low as $199 secondhand! If so, then in a heartbeat I'd buy an extra BMPCC, or two! Also wish the BMD Micro Cinema Camera would go on a half price sale :-( So keen for that Pocket Cinema look with 60fps slow motion! Plus of course full size HDMI would be great too.

He has been suspiciously quiet in this thread?!

Redusers have a few thoughts on this topic over in this thread: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?164153-Thoughts-on-Alexa-classic Also worth a read perhaps: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=74603 (Alexa Classic Owners) http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=74521 (Arriflex d-21 useful in 2017?) http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=75339 (Alexa classic EV power options)

Oh dear goodness, that guy is complete A Grade 110% useless idiot! Headphone out is still very very useful even if you only occasionally check it, just so that you can catch any big muck ups. Even if you're juggling a few roles, you could still run the audio into one of your ears (to say catch big issues with the wireless), and leave the other ear open and free to communicate with other crew and the talent.

It makes no sense whatsoever for me to buy another camera, but sometimes this just too damn tempting......... arrrrrrgghh!!!

The SmallHD is much much better!

Tascam DR10X is only US$99: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1086779-REG/tascam_dr_10x_dr_10cx_plug_on_micro_linear.html I do also wonder whatever happened to this:

Can't afford wireless? (as anything below a G3/UWP-D11 is junk) Don't care if you can't monitor your audio??? :-o (straight to audio hell you go!) Then boy oh boy does B&H have an end of year deal for you, the Tascam DR10L is once again going for only US$139: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1331924-REG/tascam_dr_10lw_dr_10l_mini_portabl_recorder.html

Ah well I'm a workaholic and also very very frugal. Which means even with this filmmaking profession (which hardly pays well!), I can always have a bit of spare cash lying around ;-) Was hoping to buy this today: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WoW-Neumann-KM-185-Hypercardioid-Microphone-Black-AMAZING/332493338133 But the bidding just got a teeny bit too rich for my tastes :-(

Of course the bulk of it was shot on an Arri Alexa, but I see the Panasonic GH2 got mentioned as being used for the film: https://shotonwhat.com/the-brothers-grimsby-2016

I'll take a monopod over handheld any day of the week.

I think the D5300 is good enough, that if videomaking is just a small casual hobby that you could easily stick with it for another year! By next Christmas there will be even more new cameras out, and existing cameras will have fallen to even lower secondhand prices :-D Now that I've accepted that practically speaking cinematography is but a hobby for me (although occasionally reaching the lofty heights of semi pro), and sound recordist is my true profession, I do need to strongly resist the temptation to buy any new cameras. As I feel a Sony PMW-F3 / BMPCC (plus my cheapie Panasonic MFT cameras for low budget multi camera, such as occasional weddings) can serve me well for now. Thus if I am to waste any money next year in 2018 on my hobby it will be on lights (something like a kit of Aputure 120/Tri8/Mini20), which will a) last me longer & b) serve me better in advancing my craft than a new camera body ever would. The exceptions to this would be if I get the particular project and thus money from it to justify purchasing a new camera for it. For instance I am hopeful and have my fingers crossed (but certainly not holding my breath! ha) that I'll be shooting a feature film early next year, and I might get a RED ONE or Sony FS700 (or maaaybe a 2nd F3) specifically for that feature. (I'll try to push for the Sony, but I know production would prefer "a RED", so I might need to be pragmatic over that) The other exception is if in 2018 I see prices drop so dirt cheap low that I just can't resist! (such as a Panasonic G7 for $200ish, or a G80/G85/NX1 for sub $400). I don't need to change aperture super frequently, and when I do I find it pretty speedy with my D5200 to just switch over into photo mode and then back again. Easy!

Sony F35 reaches $12,000 on eBay from $250,000 in 2008
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Nearly five years have passed since Andrew posted this. (wow, now I feel old...) But took less than five years for that to happen, as I saw one beat up F55 go for a little under $10K earlier this year. Though usually they go for a few thousand more than $10K: https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-CineAlta-4K-Camcorder-PMW-F55/122801766296 ($12.9K) https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-F55-CineAlta-4K-Full-Camera-Package-Complete-with-AXS-R5-RAW-Recorder-EVF/292282955078 ($14.6K) Really you need to go for an F5 (which since 2013 has got 4K!) or FS7 (which is rather similar to a F5) to see prices under $10K. -
And now in late 2017 I've seen the F3 go for sub US$1K!! :-o Crazy crazy, almost tempts me a little to consider buying a second F3.
-
Agreed. Using Sony FZ would be nice, but they won't open that up to everyone. (ditto locking E mount. Perhaps locking MFT might be best, but no one has came out with that) So a sub PL mount makes the next most sense. As it is open, anyone can use it, and it rock solid and gives a very wide range of adaptability. I blogged about the awesomeness of this back in 2016: http://ironfilm.co.nz/what-if-kinefinitys-kinemount-became-a-universal-cinema-mount/

If you read the comment in my video underneath it on YT, you'll see I mentioned it was done after sunset, just grabbed quickly while we were on the move to then set up for our night shoot part of the scene. We were a mere handful of minutes or so away from the place just going pitch black. Done with the Aputure Deity, going direct into the EVA1. Set up very very quickly, first time setting up the EVA1's audio for this. Big rush. Not that great, you can tell when I go waaaaay off axis at one point :-/ Is trick to both be the talent in front of the camera, to remember what I want to say, *and* keep in mind all the technical bits that I should. Ah well, I'll get better with time! :-) Eh, my channel is still very very new! And the content is still very rough (as I'm trying to keep it rather casual and informal, like Matt Price does with SoundRolling.com). Thus I'm not promoting it too widely everywhere just yet. But glad you like it! Guess you haven't seen too many soundies at work.... ?! My attire is extremely normal and common place for someone in my line of work. Or are you referring to my terrorist looking beard?! lol
