Well, seeing as this thread is titled "...addressing some of the myths around..." let's address some of those with the GH5/MFT! Should stating "lowlight" be enough to rule out the GH5? Of course not! Because it is very likely the GH5's lowlight capabilities is sufficient for the asker's needs. It is good to remember some historical context, remember how excited everyone was about how good the 5Dmk2 was in lowlight? (a camera which I don't regard as superior to a GH1+speedbooster combo) Of course now the 5Dmk2 is seen as being "bad" in lowlight by 2017 standards. But then again the MFT world hasn't stood still either since the original MFT camera the GH1 either, which each model (GH2/GH3/GH4/GH5) taking strides forward in improvements in lowlight since the previous model (that is a lot of steps of improvement! We're up to the GH5 now). Look at this shot at night with the old Panasonic GH2 for instance with only practical lighting: Is it perfect? No. Is it unacceptable? No. I think in this day in age, there is no reason in 2017 to be against any of the current cameras due primarily to its low light capabilities. Unless you're in some niche scenario, such as say you are doing a one man doco of homeless people living in underground sewers?! But even then, I'd happily use say my D5200 with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, if that is all I had available to me.

Indeed, if a person really really NEEDS extreme lowlight capabilities, on a tight budget, then the a7S mk1 secondhand is a solid buy. (although you're giving up more than just internal 4K, for example IBIS)
-
Radical alternative thought: don't buy another camera! :-o I know, it sounds sacrilegious, but it isn't so crazy. Especially if you're just an occasional amateur, then I'd recommend you sit out another round or two of camera upgrades. However, if you're a professional who is out there getting paid with shoots 3 to 10 times a week, then yes it could start to make more sense to consider an upgrade.
-
If you want an a7S mk2 which is cheaper (understandable! As the a7Smk2 is so expensive, you start to ask yourself, why not just get a real camera like the FS5?!), then go get yourself the Panasonic GH5! BONUS: you won't need to put up with the compromises that the A6300 has! (indeed, arguably the GH5 is better than the a7S mk2)

Nice to see the GH5 in the same company as the C300mk2 & FS5 ;-) D850 is better than the 1D C in lowlight for filming with?
-
Yes, because otherwise you just described the NX2 ;-)
-
H.265 was a common complaint about the NX1, which is much more commonly supported now. It is sad that the biggest criticism of the NX1 is: "was too advanced for its time"! :-/

Yes, this is a strong point in favor of the Video Devices equipment over Atomos: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1140405-REG/video_devices_pix_lr_xlr_audio_interface_for.html Also, Video Devices is the same company as Sound Devices, and I can say both of my pieces of Sound Devices gear is built like a tank (MP1 & 552). Wow, that is weird :-o

And Tokina! That 11-20mm f2.8 (or the original 11-16mm f2.8 , which is the one I have) is part of the "Holy Trinity of Lenses" for APS-C Think also about what would be your B camera, I'd rather have a D850 with a D7500 back up than a 1D C and any of Canon's DSLRs in that same price bracket.
-
haha, I know that feeling oh too well! I get all these great deals, that when a person doesn't go ultra low for me then it just doesn't seem worth it to me :-P

Wow! 90 is an impressively large number. Yes, China has had a problem in the past due to its one party communist rule of not ever being able to question authority, which stifled a lot of inquisitive thought / creativity. Sad to see the western world's academia trending in that direction with a lot of areas of discussions being ruled "out of bounds".

It seems you might be mistakenly thinking that the only microphone on a boom is a shotgun, which is very *very* wrong :-/ As a scratch track for reference, or for very quick turn arounds, then it is a reasonable approach to take. Few of us have the luxury to have a massive selection of microphones at hand to match one to each person's voice :-P (although.... I do own quite a ridiculous number of microphones!) But if you have two (one for indoors, one for outdoors) then that is more than good enough for most situations for the kind of shoots you're doing.

It is a weird thing of curiosity of me when I spot a shoot using a Canon 5Dmk4! (which surprisingly I have spotted maybe two or three times in the last couple of months?! But in the couple of months before then? Nothing) Very normal however to see a Sony or Panasonic mirrorless being used. (random side note: Heh, a couple of weeks ago I saw a professional shoot using a 5Dmk4 with a 5Dmk2 as B cam! wtf)

For the next four days, the Roland R-88 is on sale again, for US$795 @ B&H (not "refurbished", brand new): https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/892317-REG/Roland_R_88_8_CHANNEL_RECORDER.html

There is something very very strange going on here.... I got my link by sorting for best sellers. And when I click my link it says it is sorted for best sellers. But then when I reselect "best sellers" it strangely decides to resort itself! Pushing D850 to the top, and now GH5 has dropped to 3rd (but above the 5Dmk4!). As for your link, that is not "best sellers" but "top sellers"... whatever that means, and who knows the differences?! (how do you even arrive at your link in the first place?)

Unless you've done side by side tests with 12bit 444 and 10bit 422, so you're certain you'll need that extra data then I wouldn't trouble yourself with it. ProRes HQ is already a nice sweet spot of size to performance. if you're considering just shooting in HD, then add the Sony F3, BMPCC, and BMD Micro Cinema Camera to your list to consider as well. C300mk2 has a good internal codec, the C300mk1 is limited to 8bit not just internal but externally too. (that is a big advantage here of the Sony F3, that it had 10bit external)
-
I have. In all those situations I've seen a GH series camera being used.
-
It would be very very VERY useful to give some context! Such as what exactly are you doing currently, and what do you realistically aspire to do? What gear do you currently have? etc For instance if this is your first camera, and you're just an amateur hobbyist who will do 80/20 split of stills/video then I'd suggest the Nikon D7500 (or maybe the D750, or even... save a heap, and get a D7100 or even D5200!!).
-
I'm not surprised at all by that spike. You can ignore compacts completely, the market is almost vanished for many people (super zooms and 1" compacts being the two exceptions which are holding out, for now. & perhaps action cameras, but GoPro is struggling), and DSLRs are on their way out..... then mirrorless is all that will remain (not now, not just yet, but in the years to come). And currently Canikon are not even anywhere in the top twenty: https://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics/3109924011/ Where are you looking? I see the Panasonic GH5 at #2, right behind the 5Dmk4 and above the very hot new D850. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Digital-Cameras/ci/9811/N/4288586282

My point is the BMD 4K sensor and the RED ONE has some similarities that when handled right they can give a nice image, but need a lot of support to get there (especially in the area of lighting crew).
-
For the cost and ergonomic clumsiness of it all, I would not bother with external recording from the a7Smk2. You're not gaining 10bit from it
-
Well put! #1 is a gamble of a big return over the long term, while #2 is reaping very significant returns right now in the short term
-
If you have a decent grip plus lighting crew, then it hardly is any worse than shooting with an original RED One! :-P
-
FZ2500 has a mic jack and headphone jack too!

On the topic of F3 love, I just wandered across this: http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=75101
