Indeed, I've been wanting one of these APS-C compacts for *aaaaggggeeesssss*! I *almost* purchased the Nikon Coolpix A when it went on the massive special, but didn't... other priorities! As really any compact is just going to be a luxury toy for me, and not a tool. One day when I can spare the cash I will. Probably once the older ones secondhand drop down to around US$200ish

Oh! Be interested to hear your review of the X70 I'd be much keener on the X70 if it had the same lens on it as the X100 series has, as I prefer the FoV

Sony FS7 mk2 is coming very soon!!! :-o :-D Wonder what it will have? http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-fs7ii-e-mount-camcorder-will-announced-november-11/

Yeah just do the OPPOSITE of the Nikon DF and they'd have a winner on their hands! ;-) ha, well at least for many people on this forum But enough joking around, I agree with your point, the Nikon DF targets an extremely small niche, so why can't Nikon target the bigger niche of filmmakers? Canon sells a shit load of Canon 70D / 80D / etc cameras to bloggers because they know the "pros" uses 5Dmk3 / C100 / C300 so that attitude of choosing and recommending Canon filters down to the lower ranks. It works both ways, the DSLR users can graduate up to buying Cinema series cameras, and the high profile / prestige of the Cinema cameras can sell their DSLRs to filmmakers. According to your argument Canon should never have released a C300 or C100?!?! Surely not. Heck, by your logic Nikon should never release a D800/DF/D500/D5/etc because no one at your work ever needs to print ultra high resolution photos, or shoot BIF, or sports seriously, etc Nope, that doesn't make sense. Nikon has two main paths: target the mainstream (such as with compact point and shoot cameras, but that ship has looooong since sailed! Or smartphones, which is too far outside their core competency and has too much competition) or target high value niches (such as a C100/C300 or FS5/FS7 competitor).

Are you using an external recorder? Are you using weather sealed lens (and need them)? Would you use the YAGH? If you answer no to these three questions (which all require significant extra costs), then almost 95% likely the Panasonic G85 will be a better choice for you than a GH4. There is still a few small percent left over for a few other small niche cases (such as if you think the 96fps slow motion quality is mighty fine and want to use it all the time?!).

This interview with Nikon got me fired up enough I blogged about it!! Hope you don't mind me quoting you Eric Calabros http://ironfilm.co.nz/dpreview-interview-with-nikon-video-is-too-complicated-for-our-stupid-stills-shooters/

Just have one setting: "Unlock Pro Video Settings" Default send it shipped out set to "Off", but then users can switch it to "On" which will enable several more pages and submenus worth of video settings to be viewable. Well.... I reckon Nikon are ahead of Canon in the video DSLR game, but the gain is not really large enough for everyone (it is for some though) to make it worth switching, as if you're going to switch away from Canon.... why not just go to Sony or Panasonic instead? That is Nikon's problem in attracting video shooters away from Canon, they can't just moderately beat Canon by little bits (like they have with the D5200, D750, D500, etc). They need to also bring out a higher end above that is focused on video to complement their video DSLRs (such as the C100/C300 and FS5/FS7 does). In a world in which the market share for dedicated stills cameras is massively declining each and every year, Nikon can not survive by focusing on only one or two niches, they need a broader platform to support themselves. The video/film world is an obvious and natural next step for them.

I'm going with the OST 801. It seems to be the more common choice of the two as well.
-
I'm going to take a wild guess and say..... rather little? And FS5 did well.
-
Maaaybe will get IBIS? Now that their stills cameras are getting it?
-
Great minds think alike! ;-) Some of the features of the FS5 (such as its new ND filter, and the slimmer body), and not needing the XDCA (yet still having all its features), would both be nice

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr3-sony-rumored-announce-new-fs-mark-ii-e-mount-camcorder-november/ Wonder what it might have??? And what will that mean for FS7 prices and popularity with producers?!

Sigma prices 18-35mm T2.0 and 50-100mm T2.0 Cine Zooms

At a certain point we need to make a decision between the hobbyist side (what we'd like to have, such as a Kinefinity) vs what will make you money (focusing on the audio niche... well, that will be true for me at least). And for many people a Sony FS5 will be a money maker for them, as it ticks so many boxes! (I'm not yet in a position where an FS5 would be a money maker for me... but soon I'll be at that level!)
-
I really want one too.... (heck I've blogged often enough about the Kinefinity cameras! Even an admin of a Facebook group for them) but I'm also not rolling in cash, and I know I should focus any spare cash instead into upping my level of audio gear (although it is already not too bad for a newbie pro: http://ironfilm.co.nz/sound/) as sound recording is where my focus is for now in making a career and living out of this.

Agreed, although I don't have the cash to upgrade my Sony F3, if I did I think I'd go with the Sony FS5. It might not be the perfect camera for a particular situation, but in terms of being the most versatile all round camera I think it is streets ahead of all the competition. And that is what a lot of us need in our main camera, something which can be used across lots of different kinds of projects. Rather than something which only fits a small niche of needs, and being constantly forced into renting heaps for everything else. When the Terra 5K ships (especially if a Canon EF or Nikon F to Kinefinity Mount adapter with built in ND filters is developed) then I think the Terra 5K might make the strongest claim for #2 place in being the most versatile camera there is after the FS5.

If I could travel back in time I think I'd get the Sennheiser MKE 600 instead of the NTG2 that I started out with, but I think at the time the Sennheiser MKE 600 was kinda new and not so much info about it? Plus I got a cracking good combo deal of the NTG2 with my Tascam DR60D. However I fear if I get the Sennheiser MKE 600 now it would be more a sideways move from my ME66/K6 (& NTG2) than a straight big leap forward like an NTG3 (or even better a CS3e) would be.
-
If you're comparing the two of GH3 vs GH4 then clearly you're somewhat budget restrained otherwise you'd have just got the GH4, thus I highly recommend you buy the Panasonic G7 instead! :-D

I've got my eye on a secondhand Sanken CS-1 that I'm considering buying. Wondering if it would be a wise decision for me, currently have a RODE NTG2 & Sennheiser ME66/K6 (& Oktava MK-012 hypercardiod I can freely borrow whenever from a friend just around the corner) paired with a Sound Devices 552 / Tascam DR680 combo. I'd originally been thinking my next upgrade would be to get a RODE NTG3 (as is practically speaking almost identical to the 416, but cheaper) as it would mean a substantial upgrade from the NTG2 (or ME66/K6) and is a mic which would last me a very long time. And then next after that would be to get an Audix SCX1-HC (as the upgrade from the Oktava). However I have spotted a secondhand Sanken CS-1 at a reasonable price (this is the older CS-1, not the newer CS-1e), and am half wondering if that could be a smart idea to get instead/beforehand? It seems like it could also perform well both indoors and outdoors? Not sure, am struggling to find much info about it online. My (almost) complete gear list is here for context, if it is relevant (maybe there is some other gap I should be focusing on instead?): http://ironfilm.co.nz/sound/

Depends where you live, you'll need to look up your local situation.
-
Can you go see it in person? If so, I'd probably give it a go first. Otherwise... $900 seems very suspiciously low for a C100 mk2!
-
If you're not going to spend mega bucks then I think this is by far the best option.
-
You could use a Sigma 19/30/60mm f2.8 primes if you don't want to crop.
-
And it would cost twice as much as a GH5 would!
