  1. Even serious pros have an Azden PRO-XD in their bag :-o But just as a camera hop. http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/10386-show-me-your-bag/&page=52#comment-305471
  2. Yeah.... not this year, and probably not next either. Not at any realistic or affordable price point. As you can look at what is simply needed from the single / multi camera approach there is already and extrapolate, the leap is simply far far too big to have what you describe happen this year. Only can happen at a much higher price point (such as the Nokia OZO, which costs US$60K!).
  3. Interesting, Movo WMIC70 and Vidpro XM-W4 and BOYA BY-WM6 are all the same!
  4. Ah I see, but then you end up with exactly the same as a multi camera rig, except they're assembling it for you (at great cost than if you do it yourself, and with much less flexibility). Doesn't seem like a great idea at all.
  5. On a related point I should add please check them out if you see Azden or BOYA (I think like Rokinon/Samyang/Vivitar/etc, BOYA goes under a different name in different parts of the world?! I think BOYA/Monoprice/Movo/Vidpro/Pyle/PylePro are all the same??? Maaaaaybe, really am not sure). I'd highly highly doubt this, as you'd need an 8K or even higher resolution single camera to even begin to get close to the good multicam rigs.
  6. No, that wouldn't be suitable. I need an extra wireless kit or two to add to my mixing bag. As I'm an aspiring semi pro sound recordist. Budget is too tight to go out tomorrow and buy a complete Zaxcom / ComTek / Lectrosonics wireless set up. Instead I'm looking for something which can more or less well enough "do the job" for no budget freebies I work on or on low paid jobs which don't have the budget to rent something better (not even Sennheiser G3 sets, which are merely US$40/day in my city). I thinking any of the four I listed should be able to handle those requirements. And then sometime in the future I'll upgrade to something better, maybe simply a few Sennheiser G3 (however I'm skeptical if they're worth it over say Audio-Technica ATW-1701L) or maaaaaybe even go the full hog and get Zaxcom / ComTek / Lectrosonics kit. But neither of those will happen any time soon (thus looking for a more affordable wireless option), as first I want to buy an Audio-Technica AT4053b, Sanken CS-3e, and Zoom F8! So that is an over US$3k investment to do first. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/642499-REG/Audio_Technica_AT4053B_AT4053b_Hypercardioid_Condenser_Microphone.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/406096-REG/Sanken_CS_3E_CS_3E_Short_Shotgun_Microphone.html http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1140426-REG/zoom_zf8_f8_field_recorder.html
  7. +x10000 please visit Kinefinity. Also take a look at what Yuneec is up to, I think they're one of the more interesting players in the drone market (and they just got a massive investment from Intel). I'm curious as to what Zoom and Tascam have got coming down the line with their recorders. Be interesting if Tascam releases something above their DR-680 mk2 to compete with the Zoom F8. Please check out Saramonic, as I'm very interested in their wireless offerings (meant to be shipping a XLR TX in June). Saramonic will be at booth No. C12042 Anything 3D / VR / 360 video related I would be very very very interested in, especially if it is reasonably affordable ish. Probably we'll see at NAB a few players pop up who we haven't even heard about before.
  8. Yeah the extra thirty bucks for the WM6 over the WM5 is worth it just for its better looks! :-P :-D And I'm only half joking.... if you bring a WM5 onto set people might look at it half suspiciously! But with the WM6 you might if you cross your fingers get away with it ;-) They do use two completely different technologies however, 2.4GHz vs UHF. Wish I could get my hands on both to run robust tests on them together.
  9. Unfortunately that feature isn't too useful, as you either need to mute one of those two or mix them together. Awkward indeed if you want ISO tracks. Apparently Saramonic (might) bring out stereo output for it, which will then mostly fix this problem. Plus it is so new, there are so few places which sell it at all, and its price with shipping/tax works out to be double (or more!) the price of the other two options. So while the Saramonic one is the most attractive of the three options for me (if I'm ruling out the 4th option, unless I see it go on special), its price does make it tricky... do I think it is better than the other two? YES! Do I think it is twice as good as the other two? Hmmm..... not sure, probably not. The Saramonic XLR TX unit (I *want*!) is meant to ship in June, maybe I should wait for that to ship and then reassess getting the Saramonic. And until then get an Azden PRO-XD or Boya BY-WM6?
  10. Currently have a RodeLink which I'm happy with, and brought it as I felt it is the "cheapest" wireless I could go with. But there are times when more than one (or two, or three...) wireless are needed. And I'm wondering if there are even more affordable options, which are still usable. Been looking around for the last few weeks at the various wireless options which are priced significantly below the RodeLink, there are a surprisingly large number of them!! :-o Unfortunately many of these ones are no good, but on the upside it appears wireless has taken great strides forward (all 5 of these wireless sets mentioned are only roughly a year old or less on the market), and I've narrowed it down to four which are cheaper than the RodeLink yet look appealing from what I can gather (here they are listed from cheapest to priciest): Boya BY-WM6 vs Azden PRO-XD vs Saramonic UwMic10 vs Audio-Technica ATW-1701L > Boya BY-WM6 Is the cheapest of the four by far at only US$140 with free shipping. It uses the 584 MHz-608 MHz frequency range. Includes an XLR output cable. Runs on two AA batteries with a claimed run time of 8hrs. Comes with a portable case for the set. RX has a headphone jack. http://www.ebay.com/itm/For-Boya-BY-WM6-Lavalier-Wireless-Microphone-System-For-ENG-EFP-Canon-Sony-DSLR-/282001404702 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb39csJwR6I > Azden PRO-XD Second cheapest of the three at US$199 with free shipping. Uses 2.4GHz wireless. Uses an internal battery (can't swap it out.... hmmm... a downside! But on the upside, it is the slimmest of the four, which is a bonus for a wireless system). Battery life is meant to be an impressive 16hrs (with a 3hr recharge time). Has a headphone jack on the RX. Internal batteries are rechargeable over USB (can see this being useful for bag use, to keep all the RX units charged up from a USB power pack. However careful battery management during the shoot will be needed with the TX units) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Azden-PRO-XD-2-4-GHz-Digital-Wireless-Lavalier-System-/171940834701 http://www.4kshooters.net/2015/11/11/azden-pro-xd-new-budget-digital-wireless-microphone-system/ http://cheesycam.com/azden-pro-xd-2-4-ghz-wireless-lavalier-microphone-system-just-199/ http://www.learnlightandsound.com/blog/2015/10/26/good-budget-wireless-lavalier-azden-pro-xd > Saramonic UwMic10 If you squint they look almost the same as the Sony UWP-D11 sets! (it even has an XLR TX option like Sony does with the Sony UWP-D16. Which I am really looking forward to using on the boom pole, to get rid of the cable) But the Saramonic UwMic10 costs half the amount of a Sony UWP-D11. As it is US$270 plus taxes/shipping to NZ (which does then significantly increase its cost, unfortunately). http://www.saramonicusa.com/products/saramonic-uwmic10-digital-uhf-wireless-lavalier-microphone-system-with-bodypack-tx-and-portable-rx http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2016/02/28/saramonic-uwmic10-dual-body-pack-2-channel-receiver-now-out/ http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2016/02/15/saramonic-uwmic10-dual-channel-uhf-wireless-system-review/ https://lensvid.com/gear/saramonic-uwmic10-uhf-wireless-lav-review/ The Saramonic is I think the system I'd like to go for, but once the final cost is worked out it ends up pushing up uncomfortable close to the RodeLink to really truly be a "cheaper option than a RodeLink" by a significant margin. Plus it is such a new item to the market that none of Adorama/B&H/Amazon.com are selling it, maybe I should revisit this item in a couple of months time and see if this has changed. > Audio-Technica ATW-1701L Cheapest price now is $330.79: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1060929-REG/audio_technica_atw_1701_l_system_10_digtal_wireless.html But it was merely US$220 at Adorama only a month ago: http://dealnews.com/Audio-Technica-Camera-Mount-Microphone-System-for-220-free-shipping/1618268.html I think that the current prices for the ATW-1701L are just a little too high right now, as it puts it too close in price to a RodeLink, so not much savings there. But if ever see it at that sale price then I'll buy one (two even!) in a heartbeat! Well, I think this now is complete survey of the "good options" which are cheaper than a RodeLink. I've surely left out a few other possibly interesting options, and feel free to point out anything important I've left out, but what I'm left wondering now... is which of these four should I pull the trigger on and buy? Open to any thoughts on my options!
  11. That is what I thought the thread would be about when I saw the thread title.... Because the FS5 can not do raw!!! And if/when it can, it likely could be crap just like the FS7 raw :-/ Yeah I strongly suspect CFast will win out over XQD. But if they give their SLT/mirrorless XQD cameras raw video capability then that will give a huge boost to the odds of XQD format thriving.
  12. Sony CineAlta PL set are the best bang for your buck by far. Downside.... they're massive!
  13. But the budget version doesn't do raw video
  14. This. x100 x1000 x10000 However it is easy to see that NOW with hindsight. But when the first NX camera came out the MFT system was still very young, & it probably seemed easy to catch up with at the time.
  15. I had a tough day out filming with it today ;-) (totally stock camera however)
  16. I feel you're brave to order that before we've even seen any footage from it! After all they're attempting what nobody has done before (global/rolling sensor), BMD tried and failed at it.
  17. I took the test but the questions are MASSIVELY FLAWED as you'll get cable / drone mixed up into one.
  18. I'm seriously thinking about that too. Just need to work out how I can juggle the finances to a) pay for it & b) get work to make it worthwhile owning a 4K raw camera~ Plus there is the tricky issue of importing from China!! Hmmmm yes the sub-PL mount is one of the most attractive things about it over the URSA Mini 4K! The other big factor is it is better in low light than the URSA Mini 4K. If only Kinefinity KineMINI 4K had 4K 60fps like the URSA Mini 4K has then it would be a no brainer decision, as they're basically each the same price. What is "DSO rental"?? Edit: ohhhh... "Dog Schidt Optiks". But would the KineMAX have much rental demand??? Vs say a secondhand Sony F5 that you could easily buy for the same price, which has the handy Sony FZ mount. Do you think the Terra 5K is more appealing than the Terra 6K? (plus it is $1k cheaper!)
  19. Yeah and if we have to wait until the end of the year for that to happen then I'm sure by then other interesting options will be on the table as well
  20. You might even get incredibly lucky like I did, I picked up an F3 middle ish of last year for just US$1.2K And with how Mattias keeps on teasing me with the low prices where he lives for a G7/G6/NX1/etc that make me drooool (I could never imagine finding them that cheap here in NZ :-( ), I wouldn't be surprised if he can't find an F3 at similarly low low prices. Haha, same!! Damn that would be great. Even though it would be a stretch for me to buy, I'd go for it! But more realistically I realise an F3 matches better where I am career wise, and meanwhile I can just wait for myself to improve and for prices to drop, and then I'll buy an FS7 (or even better an F5!), or maaaaaybe an UM46K or Terra 6K / 5K (or the cheaper KineMini 4K, seeing as they're going for just US$3.5K now. Hmmmm...) Here is a pic of my Sony F3 on a steadicam a couple of weeks ago for a short film (complete with a recorder on the back!):
  21. Wow, wow, just woooooow!! They couldn't even get China (their own country!!! :-o ) right!!! :-o I am impressed that unlike many other maps, at least they got NZ on the map and mostly right!
  22. I purchased my G3 for less than that, and I got it from ebay *AGES AGO*! I'm a big fan of the price of the G3, less such a big fan of the quality... a Panasonic GH1 or GH2 or G6 are all so dirt cheap, I'd recommend any of them in a heartbeat over a G3.
  23. Depends a lot on your location and what you want to do. But I'd suggest buy two cameras: A bigger one for those benefits such as XLR inputs and ND filters, and just looking bad ass to the client. Sony PMW-F3 gives maximum bang for your buck here! (US$1.5K ish secondhand, plus US$495 BMD Video Assist gives you 10bit 422 1080 60fps). A Sony FS700 is also reaching very low prices these days, so maybe consider that. Or a JVC LS300. Plus a smaller camera for when that is more appropriate (such as on a gimbal, or when you simply need to go multi cam), for this I recommend a Blackmagic Design Micro Cinema Camera. But a Sony A6300 / A7s mk1 or Samsung NX1 would also all be solid choices. Then get a set of lenses, either Sigma ART (Nikon F mount), or Nikon AF-D, or Rokinon Cine DS. http://ironfilm.co.nz/rokinon-cine-lenses/ Buy a Tascam DR-70D + MKE600 + RodeLink + Zoom H1 + Aspen Lav + Boom + Rode Blimp v2 + Senal SMH-1000 headphones + Samson C02 mic + Rode WS6 windshield. For lights get a basic kit of: http://www.came-tv.com/3-x-800w-pro-red-head-redhead-continuous-light-lighting-stands-p-158.html http://www.came-tv.com/1%C3%83%C2%97650w2%C3%83%C2%97300w1%C3%83%C2%97150w-fresnel-tungsten-light-video-spotlight-p-318.html (plus dimmers) http://www.came-tv.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=19_23&products_id=503
  24. Well, if this means the true *END* of the NX1 then I look forward to later on this year buying a secondhand Samsung NX1 for US$500? ;-) Hope so. As I'll use my Nikons on it, so I don't care what happens with the lenses.
