Sony RX100 is undoubtedly the best P&S under US$400 (at least until the Panasonic LX100 drops drastically in price). There are three versions of the RX100, you'll need to look at the first version and/or the second hand market to find one that squeezes in under your budget.

Where did you read that? Would be fantastic if so. But reading B&H specs shows nowhere the option for PAL recording: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1148513-REG/panasonic_dmc_g7hk_lumix_dmc_g7_mirrorless_micro.html/prm/alsVwDtl

I hope it is!! If not another person in the world needs to buy a Canon Rebel ever again for filmmaking then I'll be a happy man! :-P People's obsession (on less well informed filmmaking forums) with using a new Canon Rebel for filmmaking needs to die.
-
Extremely ironic they've got a video about "Family without borders" yet the camera can't switch between PAL and NTSC!!! Arrrgghhh
-
Really?? Whoa... wonder if I from NZ could somehow order it at that price?? Anyway.... back on topic, the G7 is announced now. Camera seems to be region locked (PAL/NTSC) and also has hard set 30min limit in all regions. Well.... double gosh darn for me :-/ Guess that rules it out as a viable option for me :-( That is two strikes against it already! Not going to consider it as an A cam at all (well, maybe after it drops down to $400ish on sale in a year or two then I might maybe pick it up as an extra C cam for multi camera wedding shoots) Guess I will have to stump up the extra cash for a GH4 or NX1. Or I can just wait and see what the Sony A6100 brings. I'm in no rush :-) Can wait, got a BMPCC and others after all :-D Edit: just noticed they've dropped NFC too from the G7, doesn't exist.

Launch price will be US$799 (including kit lens). So a slightly higher price than the G6 was released at of US$749 http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-panasonic-g7-to-be-announced-at-1300-london-time-costs-799-with-kit-lens/
-
You can get the G6 for US$250??? :-o How??
-
I'd rather go with the Tokina 11-16mm or Rokinon 16mm or Rokinon 10mm than the Rokinon 12mm.... as the first three can be got in Nikon F mount, future proofing you against whatever camera you might perhaps get next. (Personally, I got the Tokina)
-
If this is a GH4 but smaller, without weather sealing, and way cheaper than I'll be very happy :-D But I fear they'll cripple it in the same way they did with the G6: not PAL/NTSC switchable, no live HDMI, and no headphone jack.

@red, they don't have a new sensor. It is like the sensor in the D800 vs D810, essentially the same! I'd recommend the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with it. As for changing light, does it really matter? You surely won't be using it as your A cam anyway. As you've got D750 after all. So it will be your semi unmanned camera instead I'd presume.
-
I'd rather go with a Panasonic G6 with an optically stabilised Panasonic lens than either of those two.
-
Why did you go with the AF100, how long ago was it shot?
-
I'd be curious to see: Dynamic range. Low light. How far can the shadows and highlights be pushed to be recovered in post.
-
I'd go with the D5200, is one of my main cameras and goes for so cheap these days it is practically disposable. I think the live view / aperture thing by people is severally over blown, I find it to be a trival concern to work with. As it is a Nikon too it should be easiest to match in post. http://www.eoshd.com/2013/02/nikon-d5200-review/

I'm a big fan of the Tokina, as is Duclos: https://matthewduclos.wordpress.com/tag/tokina/ For longer... tricky, might want to wait for Sigma to update their 85mm lens. Which I suspect will be "soon". Currently I'm using (all Nikon F mount) Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 + Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 + Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 + Rokinon 85mm T1.5 for my long needs. All which I picked up very cheap.

I'm using this one with my BMPCC, FeelWorld FW759: http://www.ebay.com/itm/141563260866 I reckon it is the best bang for the buck, unless you go up in price to a BMD Video Assist (which also won't ship for a while yet. But when it does, I'll get one).
-
Yup, any of the GH series cameras are great
-
Weird, and I too get the same issue with my D5200 with red/blue pixels. Handy to know it goes away at 1600 ISO, I shall have to check that out.

Nikon Hacker and ML are nothing to do with each other
-
Nah, that wouldn't be a good title at all. As it would be old news, they'd already got to that point ages ago.
-
If you want higher quality 4K on a drone, then the Panasonic LX100 is the obvious answer :-) NOT the Canon XC10

There is a *HUGE* amount of potential greatness from a NX1/GH4/A7s, especially if you're coming from a XH-A1 background from way back in the distant past. Most folks will just be scratching at the surface of the full potential of a NX1/GH4/A7s, and when filmmaking at an indy level is already got so many tough obstacles to tackle along the way.... why add in more which aren't essential?? Thus I suggest starting off with NX1/GH4/A7s, then in a year or three upgrade to a more expensive raw/ProRes shooting cinema camera.

I agree, in the years and years which a person might spend to produce just one "high quality" film (it might even never happen...), another person could've in the same length of time produced half a dozen or more quick films that gradually escalated in complexity and budget. Who do you think at the end of this period has gained greater knowledge and more contacts, and is better prepared for his next film? I'd say obviously the latter person. You're making some huge assumptions here. Take another example: running. Does everybody who takes up jogging aims or even want to go to the Olympics? Nope! Some runners just enjoy the process of running, and who cares about how far back they finish?? They don't. Others enjoy running for all the other benefits they reap from running (which is many many!), other than the elusive Olympus Gold Medal. Yet another group of runners are happy if simply their PB drops each year to be faster than the year before, even if they never ever get close to breaking 30 minutes for 10km (let alone a 26 minute something 10km for top Olympic standards!). Now, why should filmmaking have to be any different? There are a very very diverse range of reasons and motivations as to why people are filmmakers.

levisdavis, I thought the D5500 just performs roughly similar to the D5300/D5200 but slightly better?
-
I agree, for nearly everybody the price vs performance gain you'd get with a GH4 isn't worth it. Is easier to argue the case for using it with a Sony A7s, as it is "crippled" without it because it can't do 4K internally. But then you're looking at a very steep total cost... you could buy 3x GH4 for that! Also, rather than Atomos Shogun I'd be seriously keeping an eye on these instead: http://www.videodevices.com/products/portable-video-recorders/pix-e A 10 inch screen on a tiny mirrorless camera is a rather bulky setup, 5 inches strikes me as being much nicer. As for getting a URSA Mini 4.6K... why?? You already have a GH4! And as you said, you're a newbie. (remember the URSA Mini 4.6K doesn't cost "just" $5k, once you've got a full kit up and running with it the cost could easily have doubled. That is an insanely large amount of a newbie to spend, when we live in a time of so much cheap gear that does great stuff. Such as a GH4) Keep the GH4 and instead pick up lenses for it, such as a kit of Rokinon Cine DS (in Nikon F mount) lenses, or a Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with a RJ Lens Turbo (Nikon F to m4/3). Or any of many other useful additions, such as set of Dedolights, or DJI Ronin-M, or a Konova slider, or Rode NTG3, or.... the list could go on and on!! I suggest the order of priorities to spend money on should be: 1) don't spend it, keep it in the bank! 2) any of a huge list of items.... which are not a camera body 3) last of all URSA Mini 4.6K In a year or three this could change however, when the URSA Mini 4.6K has come down hugely in price, or something else new has hit the market, or you're earning money with your GH4, or you're feeling you're starting to grow past the GH4, etc But for right now, for where you are, that order of priorities for #1 / #2 / #3 sounds about right.
