As the house is probably burning at night, AND the a7s cost more, I'd of course grab the Sony!

Shooting with the Samsung NX500 - a pocket 4K cinema camera
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Oh well, is confirming the bad news. Same sensor as the NX1. But very crippled, if that is something Samsung did intentionally (hope not?) or is due to its cheaper lower end processor, don't know. A little part of me hoped it would be different.... as Samsung went so balls to the wall with the NX1 in not holding back. Maybe maybe the NX500 might be fixed with future firmware updates, like the NX1 was greatly improved with lots of firmware updates. The NX500 is still a heaps better camera than 90% of others in its price point. Just not what I'd hoped. Was thinking NX1/NX500/NX300 could be an interesting set up for next wedding season. But ruling that out now, I think it will surely be GH4/GH2/GH1 for me. The extra price gap for Samsung NX set up doesn't justify the performance jump for me. -
If that is true, the NX500 is a complete write off for me :-( Such a pity, had high hopes this could be "the one". After how Samsung wasn't holding back with the NX1 I was kinda expecting Samsung wouldn't be indulging in these games of crippling lower end products.

I purchased it via Personal-View forum's. Dumb EF means it doesn't have electronic connectors.
-
I recommend RJ Lens Turbo, it costs a mere fraction of the Metabones standard 0.7x focal reducer. And yes, it comes in C/Y mount (or you could use a dumb EF, which they sell too). RJ Lens Turbo is what I use myself on my BMPCC (RJ Lens Turbo is really the only good Chinese alternative focal reducer for m4/3. as I'll agree all the others are rubbish! Except for Mitakon if you're looking for one for Sony E mount). Otherwise, splurge out and get the dedicated BMPCC Metabones speedbooster, but just remember you won't be able to use it on a GH4 (or GH5...) if you get one of those in the future.

The Sony A7000 might meet your hopes. That is the one I'll be the most excited to see what it is. I'd also hope it is time to see a FS200/FS1, though read zero rumours about that. Plus will be keeping my fingers crossed Panasonic brings out a G7 and AF200. I'll be expecting a Canon C300mk2 as well, but I expect it to be overpriced and boring. Blackmagic Design probably will surprise us again, but I highly doubt it will be a BMCC v2 or BMPCC v2 which is what I really want to see.
-
Oh well, disappointment. Will keep an eye out for the reviews. But it looks like it it back to waiting for the A7000 or maybe a G7
-
Yeah those two cameras (RED One and BMPC4K) have quite the overlap, getting one or the other makes sense. No point having both however!
-
If you're looking for the sweet spot of dirt cheap but great 1080p, get the Sony A5100.(I picked up mine like new for just US$310) Has a bit better than stock 5Dmk3 quality, but also has FHD 60fps. Otherwise wait for reviews of the NX500 to roll in. Or if you're very patient, wait for Sony A7000? It might get announced at NAB.

It does happen! I started out with a GH1, but I'm very glad that from the start I was investing in Nikon F mount lenses, as then it made it completely 100% painless to transition from a GH1 to a D5200 thanks to reviews like Andrew Reid's: http://www.eoshd.com/2013/02/nikon-d5200-vs-canon-5d-mark-iii/ http://www.eoshd.com/2013/02/nikon-d5200-review/ And if I was more into photography, and had the budget, I'd be pouncing on the D750 immediately!

http://www.43rumors.com/panasonic-press-conference-on-april-13-new-ag-af-4k-mft-camcorder-coming/ Thought I'd start a new thread to collect rumours about an "AF200" and to contain our own wild speculation/hopes/dreams about it ;-) Not too long after the HDSLR revolution started, the companies started bringing out accessibly priced large sensor video cameras with interchangeable lenses. Such as the AF100, then later the FS100, then a bit later the C100. Since then the C100 has been replaced with the (very disappointingly small update) C100mk2, the FS100's big brother the FS700 has been "replaced" (unofficially) with the FS7 (so surely the FS1 or FS200 is coming along next? Perhaps a topic for another thread...). Thus where is the AF200? One which has been waiting for an update for years and years longer than any of the others (and no, the AF100A hardly counts! Though I guess that is what Canon did with their "C100mk2"....). Perhaps with the success of the GH4 (surely the most successful of the entire GH line so far), and the mainstreaming of 4K, those two factors will be sufficient to propel Panasonic to update the ageing AF100?? On a somewhat related point, how relevant is the AF100 still in 2015 and beyond? Some would think it still is: http://www.anycamerawilldo.com/old-but-not-out/ Am somewhat considering an AF100 myself, as planning on doing the next upcoming wedding season with one GH4 body and perhaps five or so GH1 bodies (maybe swapping out one GH1 for a GH2 with a monitor instead, for my second shooter to use). Thus I'll have a GH4 for single camera shoots (corporate ads / music videos / etc) and I'll have a heap of GH1 bodies to cheaply (only US$150 each!) cover the multiple angles needed for filming live events such as weddings. And I should be able to easily edit between them (making life an awful lot easier for me than this wedding season when I used: Nikon D5200 / Sony A5100 / Panasonic GH1 / G3 / GF3 / BMPCC). However, half considering if it is worthwhile getting an AF100 as well if I see one cheap enough (say perhaps getting close to US$1,000-ish). As for appearances sake it could be reassuring for clients/brides to see my show up with an AF100, and not just a bunch of tiny GH1 bodies. Additionally I could have it handle some of the sound needs with its XLR inputs (additional to my usage of a Tascam DR-60D). And it is a camera which should cut in fairly easily enough with the bulk of the GH1 footage I'd hope?

I'm assuming that Fujinon is a C mount lens, if so it will be impossible for it to get infinity focus on a Samsung NX mount.
-
Nice! There are some nice lenses in that range. And of course if you have those lenses, go for BMCC MFT not BMCC EF.
-
I wouldn't waste even half a second considering Canon in 2015 for raw. Get a A7s / BMPCC / NX1 instead. There is utterly no point to a BMCC EF when you could get a BMCC MFT instead, and unless you're pretty much boringly only recording on a tripod (and/or you already own all the heavier support grip gear for larger cinema cameras, and not the DSLR class) then I'd always pick a BMPCC over a BMCC MFT.
-
Found out today Blender supports editing NX1 files directly! Getting there! Somewhat, with a semi-mainstream NLE.
-
Are they? Impressive if so, as Samsung has a huge manufacturing capacity I'd presume.
-
No doubt for sure here that I'd go with an A7s if on a tight budget and filming at night! There is nothing quite like that. Sure, the record button is in a slightly odd place, but after a bit of practice you'll be able to reach for it like second nature. Also, I suggest strapping a small LED light to your wrist, so you can just tap it and then see your way around. Is very handy having this for night filming in pitch black. For filming on a boat as a one man crew, I doubt I'd use a Shogun with the A7s. At least not until you've got plenty of experience with it on the land first.
-
A lower megapixel count sensor? Would be awesome! But that might have meant developing an entirely new sensor, which means a hugely additional cost.
-
A BMPCC (*NOT* BMCC or BMPC4K!) *could be* the right first camera for a a very keen filmmaking student (which maybe he is? After all he is here posting on EOSHD). However, the average filmmaking student would be much better off served getting an A5100 / A6000 / G6 / GX7 / D5200 / NX500 Or if they're a rich student (such things exist??) An A7s / GH4 / NX1 instead.
-
Keep an eye out for when the A7000 gets announced soon? Should be well specced, and I think it should likely be easier to make the A7s match the A7000 than to make the A7000 match over non-Sony cameras. If you have to get it asap, then get the A5100 or A6000 instead for now (I picked up my A5100 for a mere US$310 btw, when on sale). The pricing of the A6000 seems about right to me really for your needs, given you still need to budget for everything else from only a relatively small amount of money. Spend a grand then on lenses (I suggest the Sony 18-105mm f/4 as a general purpose run and gun multipurpose lens, then get a few fast Nikon F mount primes together with a normal adapter and a RJ Lens Turbo focal reducer. This is my normal set up with my A5100), a few hundred on audio, and get a tripod with a slider (I myself have a Fancier FC-270A and Konova K2, very happy with them and are in my opinion the best you can get in their price range at the low end. Though there might be others out there now which are better value). Also, hello! I'm across the ditch in NZ :-)

http://www.redsharknews.com is owned by the makers of Lightworks, but I don't mind that. As they seem to be fair enough in covering their competitors, plus they cover way way more than just the little niche they're in of NLEs (reviewing cameras, other tech, and other filmmaking news, etc). RED + BMC = way too close that overlap is! Can't say it can't be done though, they could pull off running both. But it is an extremely tricky tightrope to walk to manage the temptations, and it seems initially they're not quite managing this?
-
As a GH1 owner myself, I'd love to see a direct head to head between the GH1 and the NX1!
-
Wait... WHAT?? The president of RED also owns bmcuser???? :-o OMG, I could see how if you're not careful that could be a huge huge conflict of interest. I suppose it is kinda ok when the BMCC still fell very short of of a RED (no 4K or higher resolution, no higher than 30fps frame rates, just to mention a couple of aspect) but now with the URSA, you have to wonder if Blackmagic Design continues to push into the high end but at radically under cutting prices.... how will this impact bmcuser when they're owned by the president of RED?? Imagine if BMCC announces at NAB a Super 35mm camera which does 6K @ 240fps for $5k? Then a year later drops that price down to $3k? (I doubt either of these things will happen, but possibly.... when you look at what surprises they've pulled already with the BMCC and BMPC4K, and the price reductions they've had with the BMPCC and also the BMPC4K. Heck, the BMPC4K got its price reduction before it even shipped!). This could put the admins of bmcuser in an awkward spot whenever they need to make judgement calls.
-
Yup! Sometimes I wonder why I even purchased any more other cameras after my Panasonic GH1.... it is still a fine camera! I think next wedding season I might simply just go with 5x GH1, would make my life easier to have them all match too.
