How did Canon gimp the C70's AF?
-
I'll pass!

Many people have no desire to be a director. Thus if the experience they're gaining while a 3rd AC helps make them become a great 1st AC (or DoP), then that's perfect. But even so, I think if more directors spent a year as a 3rd AC on a wide variety of productions, I think they'd be a better director!

Just for storage/transport? Or to wear it during the shoot itself?

Coronavirus survey part 2 - how are work & incomes going?
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
People have been made to be terrified of each other. What I'm saying, is there hasn't been a balance in the messaging. Telling people to still go outside where they please, and enjoy the sunshine and life. -
Not surprised, I know of a friend or two in the real estate business who'd at their peak would be pushing close to that in a year. Ha! I bolded the relevant points. Sometimes I'm tempted to dabble in Sound Post. But it would be distraction from my main focus (are there any absolute top top tier drama sound mixers who are also equally top of their game in post audio too? Nope). Also, when would I find the time? Lately been doing 100hr+ weeks (when we're not in lockdown though... like we are currently. At least it ends tomorrow! yay).

Pity they don't have any Nikon 1 series cameras to put it in!

Coronavirus survey part 2 - how are work & incomes going?

(bolding mine) That's not healthy at all! What are going to be health consequences due to many people being short of Vitamin D? And because they've got less physical exercise due to not going outdoors as much? The mental health consequences due to being lockdown for months on end? The MSM/politicians/"experts" will have a lot to answer for due to their feeding of this paranoid hysteria. -
And timecode! And waveforms! And TA3F with P48! And full size HDMI! (with an additional bonus mini SDI output?? Seriously, these heavily video focused cameras such as the S1H/GH5S/a7Smk3/etc should give us a second independent output. Then your on camera monitor could be log with info overlays, and the director etc can get a clean Rec709 feed)
-
Hopefully that means inclusion of tools such as punch in focus while recording, anything but micro HDMI, waveforms, timecode, and other such key tools video professionals expect. Hopefully Panasonic's new organic sensor comes out and becomes mainstream sooner rather than later, to shake up this current near monopoly situation.

There are definitely people who shoot with the likes of a FS7/FS5/FX6/EVA1/UMP/etc (what you'd call "a major equipment upgrade") who do the bulk of their bread and butter work shooting solo, and make a good living from it. But still.... you should at least be on the fringes of doing bigger crewed work, with a sizeable minority of your work of the scale that a gaffer / 1st AC / sound mixer / MUA / etc (perhaps not all four at once though, although even that still falls into the "very small crew" category) are being used as part of your work. And if not, do you really need that "upgrade"?

The odds of a Nikon D7 ever happening just went down. Although I feel like there will be at least one more update to the Dx lineup before Nikon completely pulls the plug on the range. But the lifecycle of the D6 will be longer than any other Dx series camera that has gone before it.

Agreed. Even when your HoD is clearly inferior to you, there are still opportunities to learn! You're better off than sitting at home. Yup, I feel this is especially a trap OMB-ers can full into. (after all, when you're going solo you're stretched to the max so you can't think of the big picture to improve beyond what you're doing right here and now to get it done)
-
How do you define "you publish"?? Do you have to direct it? Do I have to produce it? Do I have to edit it? As I do none of those. Thus my answer should be "zero"?! And yet, I'm one of the busiest filmmakers there are here. However, I just stick almost exclusively to my roles in the sound department.
-
I do agree, we need more cameras that can do both their max possible recordings and very lightweight proxy recordings internally simultaneously to two cards. Especially in this day and age of covid, when so much needs to be done remotely. And they might want files online ASAP to be shared, even if just for reviewing. It's great to just immediately email the proxies, then post the harddrive of the files themselves (or if you've got a fast enough connection, upload overnight. But that's still not getting it to them as speedy as proxies would).

Numerous people have been receiving their Rode Go II already, and reporting problems found with it...
-
Sure, being in the sound department you quickly grow to accept your priority is ranked looow down. That's why I gave a range of options that I listed. Perhaps not "FOREVER"! That's a looooong time. Perhaps in five or ten years time they'll have grown up and worked out their issues, and have refined products. Many of these Chinese companies are developing very fast. (but still falling way shorts, as they've got a looooong way to go)

I wouldn't know, I don't own both to do a comparison, is a little below my paygrade am afraid. Ask me about a MKH60 vs CS3e... Or go for a MixPre3, think that is one of the best picks for a videographer due to their ultra compact size, to pop underneath a mirrorless camera.
-
It is not a D850, but I found those videos comparing the Nikon D750 with the BMPCC to be enlightening: If you're new to videography, than any of these good modern-ish Nikon DSLRs definitely won't be holding you back! You've got twenty other things to worry about first before even beginning to think about upgrading your camera body.
-
With almost any camera you have can benefit from an external monitor, even big cinema cameras have extra monitors being used for the operator / AC / director (or all of the above). Especially if you're just doing the bulk of your work as sit down interviews, I can't see why you wouldn't want to use an external monitor.
-
I'd say on most of these points, the FX6 would win out over the C70

Seems like they're working on it: https://www.newsshooter.com/2021/03/02/rode-wireless-go-ii-export-issue-new-firmware/

You could just plug a Deity D3 Pro and plug it into a Rode Go? https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1448999-REG/deity_microphones_vmicd3pro_v_mic_d3_pro_directional.html

Perhaps I was making a stretch of a leap, but I think I can see it if you squint. (like adding 60fps to a GH2, is a refinement to the concept rather than a big bold leap forward. Likewise the GH4 going from external 10bit to internal can also be seen as a "refinement") Definitely the tick-tock approach is much more clearly seen with say Nikon's: D3 > D3s > D4 > D4s > D5
