  1. They're selling for around US$3K-ish these days for the body only if you get lucky
  2. Indeed, 99.9%+ of us on this forum will never be making the call as to what camera gets used on a Netflix commissioned production. That "crap movie" is still one better than 99% of us here who will never get any feature film we produce onto Netflix. (let alone commissioned by them!) The task of making a good feature film is far far far tougher than many of us realize. That's exactly what's happening, has any cinema camera at any budget level came out this year without a TC input option of some sort?
  3. Exactly, if you're not doing it professionally, then for sure, you can do silly stuff such as promoting the criteria of "global sensor' to being above everything else as being waaaaaaaaay "more important" full stop. But in the real world, then for 99% of productions not having a global sensor is not a deal breaker.
  4. With how dirt cheap field recorders with TC are in 2020, and how dirt cheap timecode boxes are in 2020, and how common place TC has become in even entry level cinema cameras, then I think you'd be very foolish to shoot any feature film or tv series in this day and age without using TC as part of your workflow. And they do!! I've mixed at that level for Netflix, and they do indeed have huge expectations from post that I have to live up to.
  5. That video only has 144 views! Is a very new product indeed. Is US$449, that makes it a fair bit more pricey than a cheap Aputure Amaran 200D is: https://www.adorama.com/clilmax350sl.html
  6. Are you doing this as a hobbyist or a professional? If the former, then yeah, it doesn't matter what others think.
  7. Have thousands and thousands of clips to sync with tight deadlines and I bet you'll start to think of TC as being "mandatory" too.

    NX1, baby!

Bet they never sold 1 Million Sumsung NX1 bodies, let alone millions of them.
  9. Go stand outside a cinema and as the people leave, poll them with the questions: "did you see the rolling shutter?" & "did you find it objectionable / deal breaker?" The answer will be "No" & "No" (or even more likely: "what the hell are you talking about?") Not a single person watching a film in your average cinema theatre gives a damn if the camera used has a global shutter or not. But if you really "must" (perhaps you shoot tonnes of flash photography, or you're the world's biggest fan of whip pans) then buy yourself Sony PMW-F55 and be happy. (they're becoming quite affordable ish now on eBay)
  10. That's not true, the Aputure Amaran 200D is cheaper than the FS300 (and only thirty bucks more than the FS200). Also the Aputure you can control remotely with a nifty app, while it seems NanLite lacks that, and to even get basic remote control capabilities you've got to spend extra to buy a remote control accessory. (which isn't as fully featured as the Aputure app)"" I'd also like to hear the fan noise from each, the Aputure will only kick on when needed and is off otherwise. Also, the Aputure is a true COB design, while the NanLight is rather an array of small LEDs.
  11. Nah, the 1D C has exceeded film in some measures. Look and see how each looks at 3200 ASA..... Sure, if you mess it up then the 1D C will look sh*t But the same is true for if you screw up film. (and to be fair, most of us here are more likely to screw up a film shoot than a 1D C shoot...)
  12. Because any larger production is recording dual system sound. And TC makes that workflow go through waaaaay easier.
  13. The cheapest of cheap options is to go secondhand 😉 You can get a Sony FS7 with accessories for that budget you said.
  14. What he's saying, is that they've already caught up (and surpassed it).
  15. You're not the only one who wishes there was an URSA Micro Pro released by BMD! I'd agree. Even an ARRI Alexas Classic, that's not a bad idea. As then you've got a baseline to compare yourself (and your cameras) against.
  16. Or it might be none of those, and it might be because he was looking at images created by highly skilled and experienced DoPs, supported by an entire crew who are also highly skilled and experienced. And it is that which is creating the "cinematic look & feel" that @bonesandskin speaks of.
  17. There are many downsides to living in the world's most remote city, on an island in the ocean. But just occasionally there are benefits too, such as the ease of just lifting the drawbridge and ignoring the rest of the world when the sh*t hits the fan.
  18. The other downside is the a7Smk3 is a much much more expensive camera than the Panasonic S1/S5/GH5 (yet another downside... is that the a7Smk3 lacks waveform monitoring, or anamorphic support)
  19. Ditto, no restrictions whatsoever in my country either. (except recently a requirement was brought in for mask wearing on public transport)
  20. No surprise. And thank you again Netflix for helping encourage more cameras to get TC input! Doubt the C70 would've got timecode if not for Netflix.
  21. This was also shot with a Sony PMW-F55: https://zsyst.com/2016/04/read-cinematographers-craft-a-unique-period-look-on-hbos-new-series-vinyl-shot-on-a-sony-f55/
  22. A few big ones are: no 4K, no slow motion beyond 60fps, and can't load LUTs. Is funny how the F3 is cheaper now secondhand than the C300mk1, but back in the day F3 had a new price which was higher. Just is the influence of Canon still showing through, and the high popularity of the C300mk1/C100 shining through and keeping their secondhand prices high. Has got to a point now where the F3 and C300mk1 are finally a similar ish price, but that's due to how long it has been that finally the C300mk1 prices are dropping to a reasonable level, and oddly the F3 price has risen up again lately. The problem is that the F5 was very much targeted at the owner op market, and the doco / tv etc markets. Thus you don't see the people with the skill level or crew / production resourcing of a high end narrative shoot using the F5/F55 much at all. Rather for most shoots the F5 is going to be a corporate shooting workhorse, or similar such unglamorous purposes. But there is some good looking stuff out there with the F55 (and if the F55 can, you can be 99% sure that an F5 would also get you at least 99% of the way there too), for example: https://ascmag.com/articles/regal-drama-the-crown https://www.studiodaily.com/2018/06/crown-series-dp-adriano-goldman-asc-abc-capturing-lavish-details-royalty/
