That's exactly what I mean! Feels like the prices are higher for some secondhand cameras than they used to be. When I had expected the opposite, with people feeling the economic crunch and needing to sell off surplus gear meaning a flood of supply vs no demand for it (as everyone is penny pinching). A huge supply vs demand imbalance would mean plummeting prices for secondhand gear. Maybe this doomsday scenario for sellers will still happen, but it is another six months away.

The gulf in knowledge between those who just hang out on forums / amateur hobbyists and those who are full time professionals is unfortunately just ridiculously large.

Was watching EposVox's video this morning about the price spikes, I was of course aware of the big price spikes in live streaming gear (switches / capture cards / etc), but he made another point I hadn't thought about: secondhand camera prices have gone up too. Now I think about it, I have a funny feeling he's right? As I've been keeping an extra close eye out for an upgrade for my G6, and indeed the prices don't seem too different than when I was looking into it last year. (and in a few rare exceptions, they've even gone up a lot! Such as the Sony PMW-F3) You'd think after a year, I'd be able to easily find cameras at even cheaper prices than before? Is everyone stuck bored at home, so buying cameras on eBay to film themselves? Perhaps right now is bad timing to buy a camera body secondhand, wait instead until the lockdowns are over & people have given up trying to start up their new YT channels. What do others think?

The other big negative for Canons is their rolling shutter, which Panasonic tends to do better at. And for VFX / Green Screen work it is critical to have rolling shutter under control.

Sounds like the Panasonic G9/GH5 is a really good match for you. (or even the GH5S, if you stretch your budget slightly and go secondhand, as you don't mention a desire for IBIS. ) Yes, it is not the APS-C you mentioned, but it ticks off all the other boxes you mention. And these cameras are all full sensor readouts, which makes them a wider FoV than some ASP-C (or even FF!!) cameras in 4K. And there isn't such a massive difference anyway between MFT & ASP-C.
-
It is obvious when he said "Short" he means "Short Film" My Panasonic G9 has the Mic Input on the front side of the left side of the body (next to the camera lens mount). It seems really weird at first? But makes a LOT of sense too. As it keeps it well out of the way when the screen is flipped out.

You didn't mention which Z Cam, so to be specific I'd suggest: E2C, E2, E2-M4 Also to add: Panasonic G9 Sounds like you're including secondhand gear there because you mentioned the S1. Thus we could include: Nikon Z6 + Ninja V (or at least, this is very lose to $1.5K, and will hit once the Z5/Z6S hit the market). Fujifilm X-T4 Fujifilm X-T30 with an Ninja V

Great for spies ;-) But seriously, it isn't that long. After all the classic 70-200mm f2.8 is a very popular FF lens. And a 75mm f1.8 MFT lens fits nicely in the middle of that as a fast prime lens alternative. I'd quite like to collect the whole collection of small/lightweight/"cheap" f1.7 (or f1.8) primes from Panasonic (or Olympus): 15mm, 25mm, 42.5mm (or 45mm in my case, as I'm getting the Olympus instead), and 75mm (would be nice if there was something even wider at the opposite end like a 10mm f1.8?? Maybe the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 is what is needed to round out this collection of primes). Already got the 25mm/45mm, am considering right now an offer for a Panasonic 15mm f1.7 I got offered to buy.

Hahaha! That's the most savage comment in the entire thread. (well, following up what @Nugat said first) It would be a return to the bad old day of REDs! When you always had to have a couple more bodies on standby on set.
-
No, but I'm looking forward to shooting with the Olympus 45mm f1.8 when I pick it up later this week!
-
Ah my bad, I misremembered that. Guess that is one more area the G9 remains better than the GH5!
-
From reading reviews, it seems like the G9 is better than the GH5 in these areas: Better battery life, better autofocus, and better IBIS. Is that true? The G9 would also be better in some stills areas, such as 20fps burst rate vs 12fps. But I don't think the gap is much between them for stills? Especially as the GH5 has got firmware update for stills features such as High Resolution Mode. Of course the GH5 has the 4K DCI that the G9 lacks, and the G9 lacks the anamorphic shooting options. (and no waveforms either or V-Log without the paid update for the G9) What else is the G9 missing?

Because Tilta bribed the Canon management, so they could sell this themselves: https://tilta.com/2020/07/tiltaing-camera-cage-for-canon-r5/ Adds extra bulk, would turn off many non-videographer buyers. Not everyone wants their camera to be as big as a S1H. Haven't been following carefully the S1H AF performance, but I've been following all the G9 AF performance with the firmware updates it has good. Seems like the Panasonic G9 autofocus has got to a point I'd regard it as worth the extra money over a Panasonic G85 (but then again if I get the G85 cheap enough, I'd take it! Especially as I usually shoot with the SLR Magic 8mm f4 manual lens. Almost bought locally a G85 last night for NZ$600, but a friend beat me to it). 110% yes! Don't be like a wife in an abusive relationship who won't leave their husband who keeps on beating them every night. JUST. LEAVE! Quite Canon. Leave them behind. Sony is kinda turning into "the new Canon". While Panasonic has for years been delivering the goods, going way back to say a GH1 or even a DVX100! And they've got great products all the way up to even the highest end with the Panasonic Varicam LT. Either that, or support the new kids on the block: Blackmagic, Kinefinity, Z Cam.

Boggles me that they don't put all headphone/mic/HDMI ports on the OPPOSITE side! You can put the SD slot behind where the hinge swings out, as how often do you need to access the SD card slots? Only one a day (perhaps maybe two or three times).
-
Is a biggie lens! 12.8 lb / 5.8 kg, good luck handholding that all day long. And 13.47" / 342.1 mm long too

I don't mind L Mount thriving, as if it fails, then Panasonic might consider quitting the imaging business entirely and that includes ending their MFT business too. And for the L Series to succeed they do need a body priced below the the Panasonic S1, such as a Panasonic S5. (either that or bring out a S1 mk2 asap, and slash the price permanently of the original S1 to US$1.5K-ish. Just like Sony has done, bringing out newer a7 models but keeping around the older a7 models to fill in those cheaper price tiers)

Look up photogrammetry (or more specifically: videogrammetry ), I've done a little of this in the past. That's when you're using heaps of camera angles at once to capture a scene. Has uses for VR. But in conventional filmmaking? Nah. There is a LOT of work that goes into making a shot happen, throwing an extra camera angle into that means massive massive compromises if you want both to be equally good and not just a waste of time. Of course often people do shoot with two (or even three) cameras at once, and they live with the compromises for the sake of time gains / efficiencies they (arguably) get in return. Sitcoms with their 3 or 4 camera set ups look drastically different to single camera shows exactly because they've taken the opposite side of this compromise balancing equation in # of cameras vs quality. There are very niche cases for running high numbers of cameras for a conventional (non-VR) film: #1 Special effects, such as explosions / car crashes / stunts / etc. As you really really really want to minimize how many times you do a take! Thus throwing 10 cameras at a scene to see what sticks, and gets semi usable footage out of it (even if only a few frames worth from a crash cam, that might be all you need!), is totally worth it if you don't have to re-do that car crash stunt! #2 & more recently, VFX work, say you want to add something into a scene like a spaceship, or modify something already in a scene (like age-ing an actor, or turning them into an alien). You still treat this as a normal single camera shoot (or perhaps double cam), with you just focusing on one camera angle/shot at a time. But all the extra cameras (which don't need to necessarily match perfectly, could even be from a different brand) give extra data for the post teams to help work with in terms of integrating their VFX into the main shot. To give just one example, I, Tonya (2017) used a bunch of Blackmagic Micro 4K cameras to help put the actor's face onto the stunt performer's face. (as obviously the actress wasn't capable of pulling off the same level of ice skating skill Tonya herself did!) https://www.creativebloq.com/features/top-blockbuster-vfx-youre-not-meant-to-see https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/26411-blackmagic-micro-camera-was-used-on-i-tonya/

It is not just higher taxes, but various extra red tape / safety regulations / consumer protections / higher costs / trade protectionism / etc in Europe that all add up to resulting in higher prices for goods, "a death by a thousand cuts". If you don't like it, then either move, or vote for better politicians who'll make life more business friendly in your country.

Exactly, I don't think my wishes are too unrealistic "pie in the sky" dreaming. All I'm merely asking for is for them to take a camera that already exists (E2-M4) & add a couple of things (a screen & IBIS) while maintaining the same price point. Optimistic? Yes! Unrealistic? No. Of course any extra "pie in the sky" dreaming like a built in eND would be a wonderful cheery on the top as well!
-
That's what using the IMX594CQR sensor would mean. Although I'd be perfectly happy if they could deliver the GH5S with IBIS, and the 4K 160fps of the E2, and with ProRes RAW external, and all at a price point of US$1.5K (why not? That is the price of the Z Cam E2 M4 which is already released). Yes, the Panasonic G95 and G100 has been disappointing!! And where are the GF/GM updates, forgotten about? Yes, for me PDAF is merely a "want", and a long way from a *need*, but seeing them deliver on PDAF would bring about greater faith in the future of MFT.

Panasonic S1H review / hands-on - a true 6K full frame cinema camera
IronFilm replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Hopefully that means an EVA2 L Mount is coming, but honestly I'd rather first see an EVA1 MFT happen! -
The image quality is lacking by modern standards, and it lacks the biggest feature in Canon's favor: DPAF. And the likes of an M50 is dirt cheap, and would completely your C100 well in a seamless manner. Well, I suggested the Canon CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 first of all! The 18-135mm was just a secondary thought, as a dirt cheap option to consider if the Cine Zoom was too expensive. And yes, I noted already that you've got a 28-135, but in my opinion 28mm wide end on S35 is too restrictive for a general purpose run & gun lens. There is a massive massive difference between 18mm and 28mm
-
Would recommend you ditch the 5Dmk2 as soon as you can, and upgrade to a better B Cam. Especially for interviews/promos it can be handy to have a second bonus angle. You can could for instance consider getting a Canon EOS M50 for cheap, which would be a nice match for your C100

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1246187-REG/canon_1714c002_cn_e_18_80mm_t4_4_compact_servo.html Canon CN-E 18-80mm T4.4, is a very affordable "cinema zoom", with a wide zoom range. T4.4 isn't the fastest, but with the C100's good sensitivity, it will be workable. While it is a lightweight lens, it isn't suitable for usage on the Ronin. Get the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens for that purpose, is extremely lightweight, and is a STM lens so DPAF should be great. If you need wiiiider than the mid-wide that a 24mm is, then consider the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM Lens If the 18-80 is waaaay outside your price range, then consider the massively massively cheaper Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens for the shallow f1.8 and the short portrait 50mm FoV on APS-C/S35 Would have quieter/better DPAF performance than there is with your Sigma - EX DG HSM 50mm 1.4 I presume You can go with the same lenses I recommended above already.
