  1. How does the video autofocus of the newer X-T30/T3 compare with the video autofocus of the Panasonic G9?
  2. Because the cameras they sell now don't cost a quarter of a million dollars to buy.
  3. That's an interesting alternative I hadn't considered before for my upgrade: the Olympus E-M1 Mark II? It slots in between as a cheaper alternative to the Panasonic G9, but a bit more expensive than the Panasonic G85
  4. Sounds like a Sony PMW-F3 😉 If you're a low budget videographer, the OG Pocket still makes a lot of sense. Or if you are traveling, then OG Pocket is much more compact in you carry on bag than an URSA Mini And with range finding tools too:
  5. NDI tech is becoming cheap and cheaper too: https://www.newsshooter.com/2020/07/31/birddog-flex-4k-ndi-review/
  6. Wow, they're pumping out fast new variations! (and they can't even keep up with the current batches of orders) How long until the ATEM Mini 4K??
  7. What was the bargain price you got it for?
  8. You could get a Panasonic G7 for this budget, has a small edge over the GH4 in quality, but will be cheaper. (you'll lose out on Live HDMI out and weatherproofing) Otherwise the Olympus EM10III is good one to consider too.
  9. Even crewed productions still have budget worries. Thus they'll choose the DoP's S1H over renting an ARRI. Or perhaps they're shooting in a bathroom, or in a car (or outside a car! Rigged up), or with lots of tricky moving gimbal shots. Plenty of reasons why you'd choose the S1H over a bigger camera, even if you had a larger budget.
  10. Nobody, or almost nobody, will be buying an a7Smk3 primarily for photography as their main camera. The few primary photographers who'd be buying an a7Smk3 would be people like these examples: 1) professional photographers who are picking this up as their back up 2nd (or even 3rd/4th) a7 series body (thus 12 megapixels is plenty in your back up body), and are dabbling in video too. (for which this would be perfect!) 2) real estate phographers (or anybody else, who is dealing in a very high volume of low margin photos, thus lower megapixels is not a negative, and might even be a positive), and who at lest dabble in videography as well.
  11. Was looking into the EM10III last week, as it is going for impressively cheap prices secondhand, and it has great IBIS & 4K. The lack of flip out selfie screen I suppose didn't have to be a deal breaker, with that hotshoe mirror I posted about. But the lack of mic input? Nope, once I realized that, it ruled out the EM10III completely :-/
  12. With the small budgets most music videos have, I doubt there is a huge demand for raw video there either. Unless it is a pet passion project, like you referred to before. HIGHLY doubt that VENICE / FX9 are not the size they are for no reason whatsoever. FX9 isn't so old that tech has rapidly leaped forward to the extent the insides can be miniaturized into a little a7 body. Sony doesn't have a track record if giving big improvements via new firmware updates to their old cameras. (unless forced to, like what happened with the F5) Thus I reckon this is highly unlikely the a7mk3 would get such an update. Maaaaybe if we were discussing Fuji instead, this would be a slim possibility. Perhaps.
  13. Aside from the Zaxcom Nova (although it is more accurate to say it has receivers built into the recorder, than the other way round), then no. However I've had it confirmed that the Deity BP-TRX should technically be capable of this in theory, and I'm communicating with Deity at the moment in trying to convince them of the logic that it is worthwhile developing a firmware update with this new feature.
  14. Devil's advocate arguing the counterpoint: perhaps it is not only the camera which changed, but rather his whole workflow changed too? Sometimes when you get to handle an extra special camera, you go the extra mile in all the details as well when working with it. (also, his Sony handlers might be looking over his shoulder too, give guidance to make sure he doesn't screw up shooting with their new baby)
  15. Nope. Zaxcom lawyers are still a bothersome nuisance. Note that this was referencing the HD-TX, that a bulky plugin transmitter, not what you'd use on talent. The BP-TRX Bodypack Transmitter still has this limitation in the USA.
  16. I think the hot shoe mounted Mirror is much more compact, less likely to be a hassle in terms of getting in the way.
  17. The Vertical Axis? I don't like it when it is all crammed up together into one huge block of text.
  18. Got GAS Creep, used to be considering the G7 as the upgrade from my G6 for my youtube vlog, but for the last year or so I've been keeping my eye on the G85 prices on eBay as that IBIS and live HDMI out would sure be handy! (even bid today on a G85 yet again, only to get outbid 😕 ah well, keep on trying! Will get lucky eventually) However, as time keeps on going by, the G9 is now very attractive. (better AF! No crop in 4K! 180fps slow motion!) Especially now with that 10bit upgrade. But with the Z5 launch (and soon to come Z6S??) the secondhand Z6 prices will I bet soon hit $1.2K on eBay? That's not much more than a G9... Would be awesome to vlog together with this lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1578219-REG/nikon_nikkor_z_24_50mm_f_4_6_3.html Or if I wish to get wiiiiiiiiiiiider: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1494824-REG/venus_optics_ve1018nz_laowa_10_18mm_f_4_5_5_6_fe.html But the Z6 has the big downside of no way to even judge general rough framing of yourself while in selfie mode. Hmmmm.... ah ha! Solution is found: https://youtu.be/ZAPRqUxx5yo Is a nifty mirror that slots into your hot shoe so you can see your camera's screen, and is dirt cheap too. Smaller than an external monitor. Cheaper too. And lighter. No batteries to worry about. No cables to worry about either.
  19. Even a modestly weak patent is still a damn nuisance and stops development, it is very expensive to challenge a patent. Especially when the patent covers a niche area (that's the problem with Zaxcom's patents!) that you're not going to be able to recoup the costs easily from future sales.
  20. Here is the original image without the censorship:
  21. You may find this product to be very interesting: https://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/36023-does-this-violate-zaxcoms-patents/ Here's a video of it working: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2Ji2LvgBHrhiGwH47
  22. Once again, Nikon is not getting the credit they deserve (but hey, what is new? This has been going on for years. Same happened with the D90/D5200/D750/D500/etc etc etc). You call the Nikon Z6 "late to the game", yet here we are nearly years after the Z6 was announced, and the Z6 still remains as a strongly competitive option in the FF marketplace. The Nikon Z6 is after all the only sub $3K FF camera with 4K raw! Plus the Nikon Z6 still has better AF (looking at you Panasonic / Z Cam / Sigma / etc), better ergonomics (vs Sony / Z Cam / Sigma / etc), better colors (than Sony), better lens range than almost all (once you factor in the FTZ), better IBIS (than Sony / Z Cam / Sigma ) and more.... than some of the Z6's FF competitor. Am not FF obsessed myself (thus I'm more likely to choose a Panasonic G9 instead), but if I was to buy a FF mirrorless right now today then the Nikon Z6 is right at the top of my list, with the Panasonic S1 in a competitive second place (and the Z5 in 3rd place).
  23. Well well well, I shouldn't have been so sure. Even worse... I remember watching that video ages ago! Think my mistake was when I was remembering back in time about him saying there being a "master network" I naturally assumed that of course they mean the :Blink network! As that is what I'm using. Whoops. It's bed time. Seems like you could, just make sure you never stray further than a few feet away from the H3-VR! Ha! I don't think so. As if my memory serves me right (although probably in five minutes time you'll prove me wrong), the AtomX Sync announcement happened before the sale of the business was public. But my wild guess is that perhaps it went like this: Atomos knew they had this cool new product which could have modules, thus approached one of the major/best Timecode companies to talk about a collaboration. During the process of the collaborative development Jeromy Young discovered he liked the TCS Ltd company itself / saw potential in them / found out they're open to a sale, and made an offer. Then the rest is history.
  24. Without even looking up to double check, then I'm easily 90% sure you need the UltraSync BLUE. (been strongly considering buying one myself lately, but for different reasons, to sync up Smartphone footage) BTW, did you know Atomos bought out Timecode Systems Ltd? I think/hope that is good news for TCS Ltd?? It was some time ago though, and they still haven't bought out any new products. Hmmmm.... I wonder if Atomos being the new owners is why Sound Devices isn't working together with TCS with their 8 Series to have integration like they did with the 6 Series? As an owner of both an 8 Series recorder and invested into the TCS Ltd ecosystem, this really annoys me! (doubly annoying that the ceased production of the TS-TCB Intellislate!) I was looking forward to having the same level integration/control that 6 Series users have. Bummer. Well if not even NDI is happening, then no chance they'll make a DANTE module! ha
  25. There is nothing "backwards" about bringing out the best sub one & a half grand FF mirrorless camera. I'm betting the Nikon Z5 has better IBIS, better 4K, better autofocus, better ergonomics/design, etc than any other FF mirrorless in this price bracket. And Nikon does pretty regular deals once the camera has been out on the market for a handful of months, we'll see a hundred or two knocks off its price, or a special where the Nikon F to Z Mount adapter gets thrown in for free to make it even more of a stunning deal than it already is. We all get super excited when BMD or Z Cam launches a camera which brings the best to a new lower price bracket, Nikon deserves the same excitement and praise for what they've just accomplished with the Nikon Z5. And it is rubbish to call it hit with the "cripple hammer", it is nowhere near bashed with the cripple hammer as the Canon RP is, neither is it as outdated as the Sony a7mk2 is (which Sony simply keeps around so it can still target the price market underneath the a7mk3, while Nikon created a entirely brand new model for it). The Nikon Z5 is a cutting edge & fresh new FF camera which merely has been brushed over with a gentle tickle of the "cripple feather duster" (and given that it is 30% cheaper than the Z6's launch RRP then that's pretty generous by Nikon). Exactly. If we fairly compare the Nikon Z5 against its FF competitors in the sub grand and half category, then the Nikon Z5 only comes out looking even better from the comparison!
