I just want a 1" sensor P&S for cheap, with a mic input, flip out/up screen, with a 24mm FoV equivalent prime lens I agree, if Panasonic wants to dominate the massive YT vlogger market then they simply need to nail down autofocus for faces. The Panasonic G85 already hits all the other sweet spots. (price / screen / IBIS / video quality / mic input / etc)

It is indeed nifty specs for a reasonable price, but... it has a S16 sensor and you're stuck forever with the lens it came with!

Panasonic won't any time soon, they've basically promised as much, saying that APS-C would overlap too much with their MFT system. (which is logical) Interesting that Sigma is happy to throw a spanner into the works for Panasonic's neatly lined up plans of FF vs MFT (then again why should Sigma care? They don't have a large and well established range of MFT cameras to protect)

I think that change for the XC15 was quite a notably significant update, especially for their target market as it allows them to easily run audio themselves. (which is highly likely they would be on any shoot where a XC10/XC15 is the A Cam)

Yes, I think you got one of my main core points ("that unless you are incompetent and royally fvxk up the recording then usually 24bit is just fine". However, on low budget productions... incompetence runs rife, or just simply competent people are stretched to snapping point due to lack of budget/time/resources). But you perhaps missed my other point perhaps which is actually even more important: as a production sound mixer we're but one small cog in a very large machine, and we don't have control over the entire workflow. We mess with that at our own peril! Yet as a OMB videographer/preditor you can more easily take ownership of the project from start to finish, and do whatever you see fit with the process. (such as choosing to use 32bits) Again, in the relative grand scheme of things... the pricing isn't that crazy! Not compared to the total cost of a mixer's sound package. And one of these days I should get myself a Cinela and/or Cyclone, perhaps once these ill winds of COVID-19 have blown over and "normality" has resumed. I think it would have won them a few sales, there definitely are a small handful of odd weirdos who crave a camera like the video lacking Nikon Df. But you're right about the many many sales lost because that feature is missing from the spec sheet, that far far outweighs the minuscule number of sales they gained. As evident by the fact Nikon never repeated this mistake with a Df mk2!

Huh?? The DoP absolutely 100% needs to listen very carefully to the director, as he needs to work closely together with the director if he wants to achieve the director's vision. Exactly, working with film make it harder / more expensive to learn and gain those basic skills. Likewise, living in a pre-Internet world made it much harder to learn the basics and move up to an intermediate level skilled photographer. That's why a photographer or cameraman back in the olden days could earn a healthy livable income purely on the basis of owning the kit and having nailed down the basics. But now in 2020 a much higher standard is going to be expected if you want to make a good full time income out of it.

Am glad that Deity exists, as they're pushing Rode to innovate and improve themselves. I kinda half doubt if Rode would have put out as many or as interesting new products recently if not for Deity. And of course Deity isn't standing still either, Rode plays catch up and gets ahead, but then Deity strikes back with their new products. Feel like the last few years has been some of the most exciting times there has been for low budget but semi-professional audio products!

I always hope as many people as possible buy up during these crazy insane sales! As that should help suppress the secondhand market and make their prices drop to more affordable prices too 😉 Although that doesn't always happen, I was amazed at how looooooooooooooong it took before the OG BMPCC eBay prices dropped below the US$500 sale price they went for ages ago.

Only years and years too late! Honestly if JVC wants to do a big big marketing pushing into this market segment then they need to do one of: 1) slash the RRP price of the JVC LS300 to sub $1K to make it truly appealing to potential buyers, honestly at US$2K it is a tough sell for the majority of buyers to seriously consider getting. (not when there are heaps and heaps of very very appealing brand new mirrorless cameras for around that price, or a secondhand Sony FS5 for that price) Perhaps they don't need to go as far as sub $1K, but definitely can't be higher than around US$1.5K 2) introduce an entirely new camera, a "LS400". Which should at least offer 10bit internal, plus a few other extra new bonuses (I of course would want to see Timecode Input on a new JVC camera, and with it positioning itself as a premium streaming camera it should have genlock too) 3) do all of the above!

But once they had, the Mini became their default. The only ARRI shoots I've worked on during the last couple of years which were not Mini shoots was because they were low budget stuff which couldn't afford the rental rate for a Mini so used a different ARRI instead.

What do you think of the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G for DX DSLRs? (seems like it would be a perfect match for other S35 cameras like the PMW-F3)

Yeah that extra 4mm is really significant for an UWA lens. Is nice to know that if I changed from say the 18-35mm over to a 11-20mm, that if I had a change of heart about the FoV and wanted to go back to 18mm (or even 20mm) that I could do this without having to waste time on yet another lens change! So I do really want the 11-20, but then again my 11-16 still "does the job" so I'm not spending any extra money at the moment for now

When I first started getting into filmmaking I really liked NoFilmSchool, and followed NFS closely, but as I grew as a person/filmmaker (and I moved beyond their generic common denominator target market) and as the founder of NFS stopped blogging the majority himself (instead outsourcing it to hacks, who often didn't have a clue) then I increasingly stopped bothering reading NFS. Now for years I haven't checked out NFS regularly. Plus their botched attempt at a forum was a disastrous mess. To quote what a wise man once said: "No need to apologise." 😉
