IronFilm reacted to tomsemiterrific in Meeting with Sony to discuss FS5 cinema camera improvements - optimised firmware available Friday 7am London time
I note that JVC is also pretty good at responding to customers. I purchased a JVC GY-LS300---wrote two rather extensive reviews on B&H about it, vociferously complaining about no histogram, among other things. Apparently, I wasn't alone. Within a few months JVC came out with a fantastic firmware upgrade (v. 2) with a number of great features not available of any cameras in that price range, along with terrific technological innovations.
Unfortunately, JVC cannot fix the down right terrible EVF on the LS300. It is all but unusable, and no internal image stabilization belies their "run and gun" claims for the camera. But otherwise, price and feature wise, the GY-LS300 is a feature rich 4k camera that JVC continues to improve with firmware upgrades. Hope springs eternal.
Let's hope that Sony continues to improve the FS5 and has abandoned the policy of abandoning cameras (and the customers who own them) in mid-stream.
You post, Andrew, is very encouraging, and I'm personally glad to read your report. Definitely glad I've kept my FS5.

I just checked the preorder prices and its really competitive. Just over half of the rx100iv. So again, Nikon Flat and I will buy it.
Anybody seen any manual or something to flip through?

I hope they get rid of that pesky PAL/NTSC mode warning that shows up everytime you turn on the camera if you switch it to another region. Apparently you have to switch it to NTSC if you want 24p on PAL cameras.

I seriously would not mind at all if their P&S gets 4K before their DSLRs! :-D

As only Canon P&S interests me because of their powerful CHDK. Wish Nikon had the same!

That is a HUGELY DEEP mount for mirrorless :-o

The deepest we've ever seen, aside from that one from Pentax using the Pentax K mount.

Exactly, had the same argument with Tony myself, but these people can't be convinced.
I mean, I can crop in on a photo taken with a fullframe sensor and it's just as bright as the rest. Why would a crop sensor work differently? Hint: it doesn't.

Ah! Great to see someone already in love with this lens.  I've got to admit, it was andy lee (of course) who kind of planted the seed that put the Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 on my radar. Found a nice Canadian fellow to ship me a new one, which came in just before lunch. Had some errands to run, so I hope I can put it to the test in the next few days at least.
Supposed to have APO qualities and it does appear to be parfocal too! So, it's fair to say that the initial impression was a good one! Thing is built to see some shit and the rendering is kinda nice, takes the edge offa brittle 4K, although perhaps not really squeezing out the optimum performance of this baby at the f/2.8 I'd wish to just leave it on. I was about to try Zeiss primes now, but this is like a 50mm, 85mm and 135mm f/2.8 in one. Speedboosted and voilá, Hollywood vibes.
It's a nice alternative to the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D, which is gorgeous and the better performer I think, but the Tokina's wider range might appeal a little more. All for a fraction of the costs of a Zeiss primes set or the Sigma for that matter, although, I guess in the end the Sigma probably has a fair enough price... the Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO isn't far off and the Sigma is a f/1.8.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of their point and shoots get 4K before their rebel line. Actually, I think the eos-m4 will be their first consumer camera to have 4K... eos-m4K.

Nothing will 'force' Canon to get their act together. Canon is the Donald Trump of camera makers. It's the greatest, and if you don't agree, you're a loser. You'll buy what they make and you'll like it, too.

    Exactly.
The low bitrate from the D750 eats Panasony 100mbit for breakfast imo. Im very interested in this camera. Will look forward to your tests.
Seems like it will be much cheaper than the rx100iv as well (which btw is catching my interest as well as Im starting to finally get a hang if slog).

the 18-50mm version is gonna be a huge succes in the vloging market i think, the selfie screen and 18mm at the wide end and 4k makes it very atractive for them. Much better than the current standard which is the canon g7x

Disclaimer: This is for fun and games. So if you are the assburger type of videographer that can't see the joy in anything but sharpness and high numbers... sit this one out.
Im reviewing the Microsoft Lumia 950.
As some of you know, the Lumias have had manual focus, exposure and 24p for years. They got 4K well before the iPhone as well.
Also first with wide apertures and IS.

A new party trick is the macro, which is really close.
And while playing around with it in the house, one thing lead to another.

The camera has 1 S.Bus connection which lets you plug it in to a radio receiver and you can have control over focus, iris, start/stop etc with a much longer range than wi-fi. This way you can control the camera with the same radio controller you use to control the gimbal and that is much better for drone ops than dealing with a phone or a tablet.

That goes against their entire philosophy which have always been: a box with the best possible, uncompressed image at a low price, you do the rest.

I'm going to go ahead and say it. This $1,000 camera looks slightly better to me than the URSA Mini 4.6 footage I've been seeing -- in terms of color rendition and motion cadence. That's a matter of taste to be sure but damn it if it doesn't make sacrificing resolution a no-brainer for such a beautiful cinematic image. I have one pre-ordered. Maybe i should sell my Pocket and get two of these.

The GH4 is an infinitely more usable video camera than the Sony a6300, but the NX1 is superior to the GH4 in almost every way.

As for the speedboosters - F*CK YEAH they make that big of a difference.
If you have a camera with an MFT mount they should be attached to your camera by default.

Unfortunately not quite D5300 / GH3 good. Canon's new APS-C sensor doesn't have the moire & aliasing control of the former or the resolution / sharpness of the latter.
D5500 even better as it has the lovely flat profile and newer sensor, very very clean in the shadows.
Canon continue to disappoint - the 80D is basically a non-event, when it could have been a game changer.
