Back to basics. Default Gamma DR settings with sharpness at -10. MBL = 0. 16-235. Film Convert (Arri / Alexa / Rec 709 - Astia 100). I love using this camera. I know they are exiting but I wish they gave us one more FW update for it as a parting gift (VERY doubtful). NX1 & both "S" lenses.

Sorry to go off topic a bit ... really enjoyed your D750 review. Can I ask ... with your settings on the "FL" Picture Control, are you leaving everything as default (at zero) with the exception of sharpening which would be dialled down to zero from 1? I see you can dial contrast and saturation down even further to the negative zone but not sure if this is a good idea. Cheers.

Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100
Dean replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Think I jumped the gun a bit in my initial post ... after using this cam for two days I bought one !! Worked out how to get around almost everything and it's a real pleasure to use. Ergonomically it's awesome and just the right size. Haven't done too much video but the still looks great for it's size. The lens is so good. The AF is amazing too. I really look forward to seeing an LX200 eventually. Great little cam. -
And after shooting with both cameras, I can declare with great confidence that if stills are entered into the equations... at all, you can just start saving your pennies now. ... everyone knows it would have better IQ ... it's FF with a state of the art 42MP sensor. I like taking stills as well and thought that the A7Rii would be the perfect hybrid cam but it's not at all IMO. I just hated using it mainly from an ergonomic perspective. Not fun at all. NX1 is a pleasure to use. I'd rather have an NX1 & a D750 than just an A7Rii. The auto-focus is mythical. -- Try using a D750 ... to me the AF on that cam is amazing ... in any light. The burst speed is truly something to marvel at - better than the 15fps on the NX1? At least on the NX1 you don't have to walk around the block to wait for the cam to finish processing those shots. The A7Rii is without a doubt among the best full frame stills camera currently available -- utter nonsense. Many would argue a D4, D750, D810, 5DMkiii, 5Ds are better cameras. Just depends what you are using it for. Overall image quality is superior on the A7Rii. Colors seem more true to life without the need for tweaking. -- did you get the cameras mixed up in testing? LOL 9. Pleasing colors (Thank you Sony... at last). ... really??? The NX1 seems to have much nicer colours. I've had both cameras as well. A7Rii is better for stills for sure (the end result that is .. not necessarily taking the actual shot), but everything else I'd rather use the NX1. Ergonomically I find the A7Rii terrible in comparison to the NX1. The NX1 seems to have everything in just the right place and feels great to use. The A7Rii also feels drastically underpowered as far as the processor goes and really clunky to use ... like you are waiting all the time for things to happen. It's like they put a V8 in a mini. I don't get why everyone says the AF is that great on the A7Rii either ... it's good for mirrorless but all mirrorless seem to suck really badly when they light goes down a little ... including the Sony's. The NX1 is worse than the Sony for sure but I don't find the Sony in any way near a D750 or the like. The AF is good for a mirrorless cam ... still no where near a DSLR IMO. I also hate the fact that it is near impossible to film outside in 4k on the A7Rii as the LCD & EVF dim so much as soon as you press record. Makes it impossible to see what your actually filming. Only Sony's seem to to do this ... RX100iv does it as well. Doesn't happen in 1080p so probably done to prevent overheating ... perhaps they can hire some soon to be out of work Samsung engineers soon to fix this up Also, at the end of the day, no matter how small they make the FF mirrorless cams, there's no way around the fact the any decent fast & bright (2.8) AF zoom is going to be a monster and totally unbalanced ... bigger cams seem much better suited to shooting these types of lenses. That being said, I don't mind Sony and I'm happy they keep pushing the envelope and things like the 42MP sensor and inbuilt IBIS are awesome. I like the little prime lenses as well. I really wish they bring out a slightly bigger version of the A7 series with better ergonomics, much faster processor and no heating issues. This would be a nice camera.

Shooting with a 4K pocket camera - the exceptional Panasonic LX100

Borrowing one of these at the moment. Seems like the biggest pain in the ass hybrid cam ever to shoot stills and video on the go I have C1 & C2 set up for photo & video and have them linked to the fn1 button to call up. Also have 4k photo mode (which auto defaults to 25p ??) in my settings for C2 to use the shutter to trigger recording (which is nice). It seems every time I want to go from stills (C1) to video (C2) I need to switch the shutter to 1/60 ... then manually use the ring to set to 1/50 ... then change the aspect ratio on the front to 16:9 and also change the aperture to auto as I'm using "Shutter" priority. Not exactly easy to go from stills to video quickly if using as a hybrid travel cam. Sure, it doesn't take long to do but really?? All this to go from stills to video !! Surely it could of been made more user friendly. Seems like video is an afterthought even though they put nice 4k in it. There's also no auto iso in manual mode for video which is really weird too. No min shutter speed for auto iso in stills either. Moving the focus point around is a complete convoluted pain as well. I've assigned to to be moved easily but then you loose all the shortcuts around the dial. Couldn't they just make it so you push the "menu/set" button and then move the focus point around and still keep the shortcuts around the dial?? FW could fix all of this but I'm sure they are just waiting to put all of that in the LX100mk2. Seems to have decent stills and video quality but what a pain in the ass little camera this is to use if you want to quickly change between taking photos and shooting video. LOL On the plus side, after you hit the record button you can still use AF-S to lock in focus & also the screen doesn't dim when shooting in 4K ... my two biggest gripes of the RX100iv. Nothing's perfect I guess ... choose your poison. -
You can already do this to some extent can't you? I have programmed C1 and C2 for photo and video. I have programmed them to have different picture wizard settings and aspect ratios and they work well. On pg 77 of the manual it says that "You can save up to 40 custom modes" ... but not sure how you call them all up. Need to check further.

Great suggestions ... I'd like to see these if there is ever another FW update or an NX2 1) Ability to use AF-S in Video ... move the focus point around where ever you want and it stays there instead of going to AF-C when you press record 2) Choose anywhere in the screen to magnify in MF mode instead of just the centre 3) Peaking to stay on all the time 4) Ability to change between EVF and LCD during recording

Tried Ricardo Sousa's Gamma DR settings (Saturation = -2, Sharpness = -10, Contrast = -3, 16-235, MBL = +8) yesterday with Filmconvert (Red -> Red Gamma3). Looks OK I think.

Nikon bought Samsung NX mirrorless tech. End of Samsung NX (?)
Dean replied to Pavel Mašek's topic in Cameras
I don't think there's any chance Nikon would use the NX mount in a new Nikon mirrorless based on Samsung tech. They'll take what they want and adapt it to their FF F mount ... I hope. Current Nikon users will want full compatibility with their lenses and this will sell the most cameras for Nikon. To use the current NX mount would make no sense for Nikon IMO. Very good news for Nikon users !! -
Thanks. I have no idea what I'm doing but I find this camera a lot of fun There seems to be a lot of ways to get a natural look out of the NX1. I like these settings too ... 16-50S .. Gamma DR, Contrast -5, Master Black Level +10. Sharpness was either at 0 or +5 ... can't remember but was too high either way. My wife's hair looks pretty bad as a result. Great fun experimenting anyway. Exactly same settings here but used FilmConvert over the top for a very non-natural look ... 16-50PZ ... Arri ... Alexa ... DCIP3 ... KD5207 (Andrews suggestion somewhere along the line) I'd also like to start shooting more street stuff with the 16-50PZ ... while the 16-50S seems perfect in every way, the PZ seems to have a nice less clinical look and it makes the NX1 a totally different cam to use because it's so light and nimble with nice stabilisation especially when teamed up with DIS and the cams AF abilities. I like the PZ lens

This is a great thread. Looks like everyone's using the vivid profile. Will have to try it and some of the other settings mentioned here. I like these settings I posted previously in another thread for a nearly SOOC natural look. Has some room to manoeuvre in the darks but very natural colours IMO. Standard (Normal Gamma) ... Green = 95%, Saturation = -2, Sharpness = -10, Contrast = 0, MBL +10.

There is absolutely no way around this is there? As soon as you press record on both my A7Rii and the RX100iv (probably the same in the A7Sii & RX10ii as well but not sure), the screen automatically dims. It's super frustrating especially when trying to use the LCD in bright sun. Can't see zebras properly or frame anything properly ... can't see anything really !! Even happens in the EVF. I would have thought the EVF could have stayed true brightness. I've tried it in Movie mode and on "M" mode and the same thing happens. Set the camera to Sunny Weather as well and still the same. It probably has something to do with overheating I'm sure. At least they could give this feature an "ON/Off" setting. Better still, I wish they solved their heat issues first instead of doing stuff like this. Nothing can be done about this, can it? I've searched but there doesn't seem to be any solutions. I'm surprised this doesn't piss more people off.

Potentially interesting for samsung users: time limit removed...
Dean replied to Marco Tecno's topic in Cameras
He really does look like a Steve Jobs This could be the begging of the NX1 becoming a cult cam. Some things I'd love to see if can be done ... Ability to use AFS during recordingAbility to focus in standby modePeaking stay on for ever -
Was too vague in my post, but I meant you can't assign the centre button when in stills preview mode. Pretty sure this can't be done. The Nx1 in stills mode actually has a pretty neat feature where by after a stills shot has been taken it instantly shows you the magnified result and zooms in on where the focus point was. I was probably a bit harsh on the A7Rii and maybe spending more time with it would help. The stills it produces with lenses like the 55/1.8 are amazing but am underwhelmed with it's 4K after comparing it to an NX1. I'd love to see Sony release a slightly bigger FE camera more in the shape & size of an NX1 or a GH4 ... better battery, better ergonomics, much faster processor, less heat and what ever other improvements a larger camera could bring. I think this would be a very popular camera with many people especially pros.

I'm no pro, but I totally agree with the OP. I've had my A7Rii for a week or so now and shot some 4k on the weekend in APS-C mode with mainly the 55/1.8. Used everything from modified Slog2 setting and PP6 setting as well as standard and Neutral settings. I pulled up some of my past NX1 footage and the difference is just incredible IMO. The NX1's footage looks so much more detailed and pops off of the screen. Colours are natural and easy grade lightly if you want or super easy to make look natural and life-like (mainly used Gamma DR, Contrast -5, Master Black Level +10, sharpness 0 on most of the NX1 footage). The A7Rii's footage to me looks really bland, muddy and severely lacking that 4k pop. The colours from the Sony in any setting just look really weird and shitty to me .. especially Slog2 which seems a complete waste of time unless you are a pro who knows how to colour correct properly ... and even then it seems a totally waste of a Pro's time. Viewing both on a 5k iMac that's been calibrated. I thought the A7Rii would be a be-all stills and video camera for me but I was pretty mistaken. I find the whole Sony experience just so slow an clunky compared to my Nikon or an NX1 and just not ergonomically friendly at all. Little things like having to press the C3 button instead of the centre button to magnify (then waiting 10 mins) are frustrating as is the LCD dimming as soon as you press record (which is in a weird spot as well) among other things. I have mine up for sale. Some people may love it and it's down to personal taste, but the whole Sony experience was not a good one for me. Not a fan at all. D750 for stills and an NX1 for 4k = Edit - I'll keep the RX100iv though ... cool little cam. And for some reason shooting Slog on this with FilmConvert seems to work well. The Slo-mo is heaps of fun as well.

I just picked up an A&Rii & a RX100IV last week and noticed the screen dims when you press record on both of these cams. It is very annoying.
-
Seems like this is the trade off for Sony users. New and exciting cameras are released frequently, but don't expect the new software features in these new cams to be implemented in past cameras.
-
Does anyone know if the stabilisation is different in the RX10 ii compared to the RX100 iv in 4K mode? I hear that in the RX100 iv is defaults to lens based stabilisation only in 4K. Is this the case with the RX10 ii? Does the RX10 ii have better stabilisation in 4k? Thanks.
-
Post away ... would love to see some examples.
-
OK, thanks for that. Good to know. It may be added to the A7Rii at some point I guess. I've tried Slog2 on my A7ii a few times and it's so hit an miss for me ... sometimes it works and sometimes it looks awful ... I'm just not experienced enough to shoot or grade it. When it works it does look nice with the OSIRIS LUTS though ... however that look has worn thin with most people I think ... it's kind of like the "Happy Pants" of colour grading these days
-
This is interesting. I thought everyone was saying the S35 4K output from the A7Rii was better all round and not just with the low light stuff. So it's just with higher ISO's that you would see the S35 advantage in the 4K quality .... in normal light there's not that much difference between FF & S35? I hardly ever use any ISO beyond 800. It is nice to know you can use FF or S35 with this cam though ... very handy.
-
Wow !! Thank you for such an informative response. I really appreciate it. So by the sounds of it, compared to the A7ii I will be extremely happy Looks like shooting video in crop mode is the go for this camera. I swear Sony developed this camera to purposefully seek out aliasing and moire ... it shows up everywhere !! I never saw any with my D750 or NX1. So far I have the A7ii and the 35/2.8 & 55/1.8. If I get the A7Rii I'm really saying goodbye to Nikon and and will be investing in the Sony system which is difficult after all these years but tech moves on. The A7Rii fixes a few more things that I hate about the A7ii as well ... min shutter speed in Auto ISO and the ability to toggle the EVF/LCD. 4K and 42MP as well ... I think I'll be pretty happy with it. Also, you mentioned Slog3 ... did the A7Rii get Slog3? I thought only the A7Sii had it. Again ... thanks. Thanks for the link ... very nice. It certainly does do well in low light. Looking forward to picking one up.
-
I currently have an A7ii and am thinking of getting an A7Rii. I'm mainly into stills but like doing a bit of video as well and this A7Rii seems to be a great all-rounder. How is the aliasing and moire on the A7Rii? It's pretty horrific on the A7ii ... is it better on the A7Rii?

Some temple scenes shot in 4K on a Samsung NX1. Handheld using the Samsung 16-50/2-28. Gamma DR, Contrast -5, Master Black Level +10. Film Convert (Red / Epic X / Redgamma 3 - Fuji Astia 100). FCPX. Music is "Shanghai Dream" by Christopher Ashmore. Some of it turned out OK, but some spots I think I missed focus and other parts came out over exposed. 4K version .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTV2EnP0YM0
