NO, I haven't seen any examples of the Tamron primes being used for video yet and the effectiveness of the VR. Tamron usually have very effective VR though. I thought the VR on the Tamron 24-70 was better than the VR on the Nikon 24-120/4. I'd like to use the 45/1.8 on the D750. I hope the next lot of Nikon cameras do 4K ... but you never know !!

I love the D750. It's the Goldilocks of all FF DSLR's I think. Does everything well. I tried the Flaat 11 profile a few times with it and it seems to work well. https://vimeo.com/124688710 The new stabilised Tamron primes may be a nice match with the D750 for hand held video. Could be a nice combo.

I've been waiting for a thread like this to appear Hopefully we see more tests comparing the 4K output of these two cameras.

A few musings on what I missed in my month off from EOSHD!
Dean replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Great move and good luck to you !! I didn't know what to make of this article when I first read it, but I understand now. I love this site and forum but pretty much ignore all the high end gear reviews thread topics so your move is welcome by me Not sure if it's on your radar or not, but more articles on filming technique would be awesome too. I know there are a lot of professionals and experienced people here but there are also a lot of newbies here like myself who gravitate to the site because it's chilled and and has great gear articles. I'm not quite sure how to express the following, and I'm not sure how many are in the same boat, but people like myself who are not working video pros but into video more for the fun of it don't know where to start half the time. Sure I grab a cam and do some "test" shots and that's about it ... it never really leads anywhere. I like the little clips you put together for your camera reviews (like the NX1 clip from Portugal) and it would be nice to hear more about the techniques behind filming and not just the gear review ... how you set up shots, angles, pull focus, editing to music, camera settings ... and the list goes on and on. Sometimes I find myself wanting to start a little project but it seems all so complicated. Coming from photography it's easy ... you buy a cam and you take photos ... easy. As soon as you get interested in video things are not so easy Anyway, I thought sticking with lower end gear that punch above their weight and some articles on technique would mesh pretty well together. I hope my incoherent ramble made a bit of sense. LOL -
$99 is a fair price I think. I hope it is wildly successful and spurs other companies to offer pay-for-features type updates. Oly could probably charge $199 for 24p on their E-M1 and make a killing
-
Agreed !! ... but it's never gonna happen. In relation to video, Oly would have to be the most disappointing and the most totally clueless of all camera manufacturers. They have this awesome IBIS and just repeatedly fail to capitalise on it time and time again in as far as video goes. You would think with the constantly crappy financial results they report that they would be looking to their IBIS / 4K / decent video for extra sales ... but no ... "Panasonic does video not us" Panasonic & Sony must do 4k because they sell TV's" ... totally weird. Pokemon would do a better job than who ever is running the Imaging group at Oly. They are a pretty shoddily run outfit ... Tom Hogan always has some interesting insights into their financial reporting and results. They'll go under eventually or sell and have no one to blame but themselves. http://www.sansmirror.com/newsviews/olympus-results.html

That's the best looking example I have seen so far. It's interesting that some sort of inbuilt stabilisation is on Samsung's radar an implemented in a FW update. I hope the NX2 goes the whole way with 5 axis IBIS. That would be a big plus !!

If stills are important, I think FF would be the way to go. The NX1 is awesome for video but I have never really been that impressed by it's stills. And you are right, there really isn't much out there in the way of interesting stills to look at from the NX1 because it occupies a strange space in the market I think. Anyone whose seriously into stills isn't going to choose this camera against the competition. For video it's shown it's a great choice though. The images it produces just don't have that same "bite" and depth as images from a FF cam esp at the pixel level. Also, I know it's trivial, but I just hate the sound of the NX1's shutter when taking stills for some reason. It's the worse sounding shutter I have ever heard ... like a dull thud of a noise ... it's awful. LOL. I can send you some RAW files to look at if you want. I wouldn't let the workflow put you off an NX1 for video though if stills are not really that important ... it's nothing really ... 1/2 an hour of your time transcoding while you are doing something else. Can you wait for the A7Rii?
-
I've used my friend's A7ii and the inbuilt IBIS seems awesome to me. As long as you aren't doing huge pans or anything it seems great. It's so liberating just being able to walk around with any lens attached and getting some stabilisation without a tripod or rig. I guess if it's a professional job then maybe it's a different story but I think it's wonderful that Sony are going down this path. They'll get better and better at it to with each camera.
-
I'll wait for a couple of reviews, but I'm sure it will be pretty similar to their other cameras. I'm no pro either ... it's all just for fun Never used Canon in my life. Internal 4K, 42MP, IBIS, Slog, nice EVF ... light and smallish ... looks like a fun do-it-all cam without too many compromises. ISO 3200 as a base Slog ISO would have annoyed me but looks like thats going to be 800 so all is good. I think part of the reason I want to move over as well is that I really like the look of the images I'm seeing from the Loxia and Batis range of lenses. I used to love my ZM 50/2.
-
That's great news !! Thanks. It would be very tough here in HK to shoot at 3200 during the day even with a VND on top of more ND's As someone who is into photography and interested in video, Sony has just made my ultimate camera. Bye Bye Nikon & NX1. Going to dive into this system. It will be kind of weird leaving Nikon after all these years, but they need to move with the times and get with the program. I'd rather spend my money with an innovative manufacturer who doesn't hold back. I do like the NX1, but for stills I find it very average coming from FF Nikon. The Loxias look amazing as well.
-
The native ISO using Slog-2 on the A7rii will be 3200, won't it? I've tried looking on their website but it doesn't say much. Cheers.

I'm no video expert, but I was amazed just how natural the colours out of the NX1 using the following settings that I think I read Andrew was using somewhere along the line ... Gamma DR, Contrast -5, Master Black Level +10 & luminance at 16-235. At 4k everything seems a bit too sharp though and now prefer it left at zero. But for colours looking natural, and usability SOOC, this camera is pretty amazing I think. https://vimeo.com/126548066 -
Is there any way around this? I'd really like to keep recording and use use SAF to lock focus on what I want and keep it there and not have the camera continually readjust focus. I realise you can use the touch screen to engage SAF, but any way to do this using the shutter button ... especially when using the EVF on a bright day? Cheers.

I used the Zacuto BMPCC VF on my D750 and it was fine. Not a perfect fit, but can still access the buttons on the back of the D750 although it does obscure them a bit. The Zacuto BMPCC VF comes with 2 Adhesive Frames as well. Very easy to take off if you decide you don't want to use it any more as well.

63.7 megapixel raw with the E-M5 II - and finally 24p at 77Mbit!
Dean replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
I wonder if the EM5ii does have pure HDMi out. It was rumoured to, but haven't seen anything lately. Would this mean it could be hooked up to the Atoms Ninja Star? The Ninja Star only weighs 250gm. You could have the Ninja Star connected up and still shoot hand held with the EM5ii and get ProRes and the other benefits. Would this be possible? -
Why the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is better than expected for video (Review)
Dean replied to Andrew Reid's topic in Cameras
Thank you, Andrew !! Great review and wonderful film clip. Enjoyed watching it ... especially as it was mostly filmed on an E-M1. I'm loving using this camera and video is a whole new world for me. I tried once before briefly with a GH3, but this IBIS on this thing makes shooting video FUN :) I wonder what the fun factor was for you making this clip compared to making others? On a different note, is there a thread somewhere on EOSHD that shares E-M1 clips, settings and tips? I can't find anything and info seems to be fragmented. Would be nice to have it in one place. -
Nice informative list !! Looks like the Pocket Cinema Camera is great value for money.

I can't find anything in the manual regarding shooting video in any other mode other than "Movie" mode on the dial for some reason. But, from the manual regarding shooting in "M" in "Movie" mode it definitely tops out at ISO 3200. Auto ISO not available. "You control both aperture and shutter speed. Use the front dial to choose the aperture, the rear dial to select the shutter speed from values between 1/30 s and 1/4000 s. Sensitivity can be set manually to values between ISO 200 and 3200; auto ISO sensitivity control is not available." It also seems that the only reason they even included a movie function on the camera is so you can use their special effects and art filters !!! A testament to their dedication to video :) This is really all they have to say about the video feature in the camera ... "Movie mode (n) can be used to fi lm movies with special effects. You can create movies that take advantage of the effects available in still photography mode. Use live control to select the settings. g “Adding effects to a movie†(P. 69) You can also apply an after-image effect or zoom in on an area of the image during movie recording."

Your probably best off checking the site I suggested or some other set of tutorials for FCP. Cheers.
-
I've only been at this a month or so, Hitfabryk so can't really offer many suggestions. What I can tell you is that I purchased the "Izzy Video" FCP X training tutorials and sat down one day and did the whole lot. Taught me the basics of FCP X. Can recommend his stuff for sure if your a beginner. http://www.izzyvideo.com

Unless I'm doing something wrong (most likely the case), I really don't think you can record at higher ISO's in normal "M" mode. I tried this and all the ISO's look the same ... ISO 3200, ISO 6400 right up to ISO 25,600 .. no difference in grain. Only in "Movie" mode on the dial shooting in "M" on the setting in the menu can I see any difference in grain and this only allows up to 3200. Is it possible that when pressing the record button in any other setting than "Movie" on the dial that it will record in iAuto or something? It's confusing
