Also, absolutely shoot in 4K, unless you need slomo, or the slightly lesser crop of the 1080p mode. 4K is much cleaner than the 1080p mode, which can show some moire & aliasing sometimes. If using a recorder that'll only do 1080p, use the option in the GH4's HDMI menu to scale the 4K down to 1080p.

Recording internally: If your scenes will be lit and you'll have some control over ratios, I would try the Leeming LUT workflow: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?340808-Leeming-LUT-One-%96-the-best-LUT-for-the-Panasonic-GH4 This uses a specific tweaking of Cine-D, ETTR, and a custom LUT to correct to more pleasing colors. I've only shot with it once so far, very briefly but it seems pretty nice. Otherwise I stick to Natural with most everything at -3 or -4. Recording externally, to 10-bit, I would use V-Log , and experiment with one of the many LUTs available for it. In particular the Film Convert profile seems very nice.

Also consider the GX7 or LX100.

Does the camera even detach from the gimbal? And if so does it still function normally?

Alternatively, sell the 5D and use the money towards an A7RII and a Metabones adapter, to give you decent stills AF without Canon glass.

I would guess that an A-mount version with one of the Sony LE-EA adapters would be faster than a Canon-mount version with a Metabones adapter. I believe there is a version of the Sony adapter that has a translucent mirror and phase-detect AF sensors, but eats a third or half-stop of light... and there's a version that has no optics/glass and will just use the camera's contrast-detect AF (slower than phase-detect).

I would weigh a used FS7 against what an FS5 and the likely upgrade price will be.

You do realize the poster you're replying to is the guy in the video? And that a Loxia would also fit on the A7S, which they used to shoot that part of the video?

Andrew, you are assuming that the X5/X5R cams will fit in/on the Osmo, and that if they do, the Osmo will be strong enough to balance/counteract the much larger/heavier cam and lens. Also, with the X5R recording to SSD, you will need to run HDMI, or whatever cable the cam uses for output, from the cam to the recording module- is the Osmo gimbal set up for this, like I'm assuming the X5 gimbal is? Or are you meaning to use the X5 gimbal instead, simply with the Osmo grip?

They mean there's no difference between the old uncompressed raw and the new losslessly-compressed raw. Of course there is a big difference between ProRes and raw.

I believe the GH4 also outputs 60p. And once the VA is out you won't need a $2000 recorder to capture it.

Nah, that'd make it much larger. An updated YAAARRGH grip/box would be a good solution though- smaller than the current version, with a battery slot and SSD or CFast slot. Keep the camera smallish though, for stabilizers, drones, cranes, run-n-gun etc.

What do i expect, realistically? Probably the same body... nominal improvements in AF, RS, DR and ISO (or, more likely, sacrifice those improvements for a higher MP count)... 4K probably still limited to 30p, 1080 gets a bump to 120p, with the same quality loss as 96p now. Possibly clean at 72 or 96fps. Same bitrates or a very small increase. Mayyybe a new V-Log, call it say GH-Log, that has its own curve and uses all 8 bits. What do I hope for, un- or at least less-realistically? 4K/60 or at least 4K/48. No or very minimal rolling shutter in all modes. Oversized s35 sensor ala JVC LS300. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2. A slightly larger body with a rotating grip ala XC10, and a tilting/extending EVF with a decent eyecup (like a bigger version of the GX8 EVF). 200Mbps across the board, with a burst mode for HFR at say 400Mbps (limited to a few seconds though). 1080 up to 240, stays clean all the way up to 120p.

It's probably just to designate the new stock that has the update pre-installed. Which points to the update indeed costing at least something. The GH4's retail price was lowered to $1499 a bit ago. Perhaps the update costs $200, and the GH4R will cost $1699, like the GH4 was for over a year. Or, $100 and $1599, or whatever.

Keep in mind that the kit lens isn't weather sealed, so your body won't be either with it on.

I was satisfied with my Carryspeed loupe for my 60D. I got one for my GH4 but have yet to install/use it... doesn't seem as necessary with the better screen, peaking, etc.

Look at the new Sony RX100IV or RX10II. $1000 and $1300. Both do 1080p120 at the same quality as normal speeds, and even go higher, up to 960fps, but with image compromises.

Is there a way to use a LANC controller/zoom controller with this camera?
